Abstract

Agriculture plays a strategic role in supporting regional economic growth, employment, and food security in East Java, Indonesia. However, its contribution to Agricultural Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) differs markedly across districts and cities, indicating spatial and structural disparities. These variations suggest that agricultural performance is shaped by localized biophysical and socio-economic factors that global regression models often fail to capture. Previous studies have largely relied on single-commodity analyses or global approaches that assume spatial homogeneity, thereby overlooking spatial non-stationarity in the determinants of agribusiness. This study aims to analyze the spatial heterogeneity of agricultural GRDP determinants and evaluate how localized factors, including productivity, land conversion, labor, food prices, market access, agroindustry value added, and food diversification, differentially impact nine districts and cities in East Java. The novelty lies in integrating multidimensional upstream-to-downstream agribusiness variables within a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) framework, moving beyond traditional production-centric models to identify specific regional drivers. Using 2023 secondary data from nine districts/cities, the study employs Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) as a benchmark, followed by GWR with a Gaussian kernel and cross-validation bandwidth. The GWR model outperforms OLS, increasing R² from 0.75 to 0.89 and reducing AICc from 134.2 to 112.5, while residual Moran’s I declines from 0.32 to –0.05. Agro-industry value added shows the strongest positive effect (0.38 in Banyuwangi), whereas land conversion negatively affects urban areas (–0.41 in Malang City). These findings confirm spatial non-stationarity and support place-based agricultural policy design.

Abstract

One of the main external environmental factors influencing consumer behavior in the trending food sector is crowding, both human and spatial, where crowding can have both positive and negative effects on consumer repurchase intentions. To explore whether crowding conditions should be managed or left to unfold naturally, this study will compare the direct effect of crowding on customer loyalty and its effect through three main mediators of consumer perception. This study uses a questionnaire instrument with 36 indicators across eight variables, collected through interviews with 500 respondents aged at least 15 years who have visited trending restaurants in Indonesia during 2022-2024, using a 5-point Likert scale, and analyzed using SEM-PLS with WarpPLS 8.0 software. Brand management strategies in the food industry need to be carefully formulated to address crowding, especially in light of sustainability issues that consumers are increasingly aware of. Research shows that the effect of crowding on customer loyalty is stronger when mediated by the restaurant's sustainability perception, consumer perceived value, and word-of-mouth communication, compared to its direct effect. In crowding conditions, restaurant managers need to implement effective crowd management, increase perceived value, and strengthen sustainable brand management elements.

Abstract

Increasing population growth and agricultural land conversion pose significant challenges to food security, particularly in regions heavily dependent on agriculture. Grobogan Regency, a major rice-producing area in Central Java, has experienced a decline in harvested area alongside rising population pressure, indicating potential risks to long-term agricultural sustainability. Unlike previous studies that examine land carrying capacity, land requirements, or land use change separately, this study integrates these aspects within a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based spatial framework. The novelty of this study lies in integrating agricultural land carrying capacity, land-use requirement projections, and GIS-based land-use analysis within a multi-temporal, spatially explicit framework at the sub-district level to provide a more comprehensive understanding of agricultural sustainability and land-based food supply planning under population pressure. This study employed a quantitative, descriptive approach, combined with GIS-based spatial analysis, using secondary data on population, harvested area, rice production, and land use for 2014, 2019, and 2024. Agricultural land carrying capacity was calculated using the Suhardjo–Tukiran method, while land requirements were projected using a geometric population growth model. The results show that carrying capacity remained positive, with σ values of 3.45 in 2014, 4.62 in 2019, and 3.94 in 2024, although the number of Class I sub-districts declined from 18 in 2019 to 16 in 2024, indicating increasing localized land pressure and spatial disparities in agricultural resources. Projected land requirements increased from 46,699.19 ha in 2029 to 49,297.08 ha in 2034, while land-use analysis indicates ongoing changes in agricultural and non-agricultural land allocation. These findings highlight the importance of GIS-based spatial planning and land-use control to support sustainable agricultural development and long-term food security.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world’s major pepper producers, and ASEAN remains an important export market for Indonesian black and white pepper. However, export performance has fluctuated over the last decade due to production instability, price volatility, competition from Vietnam, and changing market requirements. This study analyzes export dynamics and evaluates the comparative and dynamic competitive advantages of Indonesian black and white pepper in the ASEAN market during 2014–2023. The study contributes to the literature by separately examining black and white pepper in major ASEAN destination markets using Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Export Competitiveness Index (ECI) analyses. Secondary time-series data on export volume and value were obtained from UN Comtrade, ITC Trade Map, FAOSTAT, Statistics Indonesia, and the Ministry of Agriculture, using HS codes 090411 for black pepper and 090412 for white pepper. Results show that Indonesian pepper exports to ASEAN were highly volatile. Black pepper exports to Vietnam declined after peaking in 2015, while white pepper exports displayed unstable performance across destination markets. RCA results indicate strong comparative advantages for black pepper exports to Vietnam and Singapore and for white pepper exports to Malaysia. However, ECI findings reveal fluctuating dynamic competitiveness, particularly for white pepper exports. Strengthening Indonesia’s pepper export competitiveness requires improvements in post-harvest handling, standardization of quality standards, value-added processing, logistics efficiency, and compliance with export and sanitary standards. Stronger farmer–exporter linkages and value-chain upgrading are also needed to enhance the long-term competitiveness of Indonesia’s smallholder-based pepper agribusiness in the ASEAN market.

Abstract

Maize plays a strategic role in Indonesia’s food security; however, productivity disparities persist despite the availability of production inputs, indicating that farmers’ decisions are shaped not only by technical factors but also by behavioral processes. Existing studies predominantly emphasize physical and economic determinants while overlooking the sociocognitive and affective dimensions underlying farmers’ behavior. Unlike previous studies that rely on linear behavioral frameworks such as the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study adopts a social neuroscience perspective integrated with an inductive grounded theory approach to examine the interaction of cognitive, affective, and social processes in farmers’ input-use decisions. This study employed a qualitative grounded theory design using in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 10 maize farmers in Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, selected through iterative snowball sampling until theoretical saturation (at Participant 3) and conceptual saturation (at Participant 10) were achieved. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative methods, including open, axial, and selective coding. The findings reveal that farmers’ input-use decision-making is shaped by a “relational-collective survival-oriented rationality,” in which decisions are guided not only by individual profit maximization, but also by the need to maintain their social relationships, relational trust, collective security, and livelihood continuity to embrace the uncertainty. These behavioral patterns reflect the interaction of cognitive evaluation, affective regulation, and socially embedded experiences associated with the prefrontal cortex, limbic system, and social brain functions, implying the need for more relational and participatory development approaches.

Abstract

Sustainable food consumption has become increasingly important in promoting environmentally responsible household food choices, including organic vegetable consumption. Although social media is widely used to disseminate health and environmental information, few studies have examined how access to social media stimulates organic vegetable consumption by fostering environmental awareness among housewives in a local agribusiness context. This study fills this gap by applying the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) model to explain participation in organic vegetable consumption among housewives in Malang City. A quantitative survey was conducted with 65 housewives who had purchased and consumed organic vegetables and actively used social media. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that social media access had a positive and significant effect on environmental awareness (β = 0.826; p < 0.001), environmental awareness significantly influenced organic vegetable consumption participation (β = 0.520; p < 0.001), and social media access directly affected consumption participation (β = 0.430; p < 0.001). Environmental awareness also mediated the relationship between social media access and participation in organic vegetable consumption. However, 60% of respondents purchased organic vegetables less than five times per month, indicating an awareness–behavior gap. These findings strengthen the SOR model in explaining sustainable consumption behavior and highlight the strategic role of digital communication in organic vegetable market development. The study suggests that organic farmers, retailers, and digital marketers should integrate consumer education, transparency in certification, and targeted social media campaigns to strengthen household participation in sustainable agribusiness.

Abstract

espite growing interest in coffee-based agroforestry as a strategy for rural development, few studies have comprehensively examined socio-cultural conditions, community and stakeholder perceptions, and strategic factors supporting sustainable coffee agroforestry development within an integrated framework. This study aims to examine the socio-cultural profile supporting coffee agroforestry development in Medono Village, analyze community and stakeholder perceptions regarding its development, and formulate management innovation strategies for sustainable coffee agroforestry development. The novelty of this study lies in integrating socio-cultural analysis, stakeholder perception assessment, Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA), and SWOT analysis to formulate context-specific management innovation strategies for sustainable coffee agroforestry development at the village level. The research employed descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and in-depth interviews involving 72 respondents. The findings reveal that Medono Village possesses strong social cohesion, which serves as valuable social capital for coffee agroforestry development. The local economy is predominantly based on agricultural activities, while diverse natural resources, including plantations, forests, and mountainous landscapes, support the area. Community and stakeholder perceptions toward coffee agroforestry development were highly positive, with average scores indicating strong support for its development. The IPA results identified several improvement areas, particularly agroforestry support facilities and facility cleanliness, although no attribute was located in the main priority quadrant. SWOT analysis indicates that Medono Village has substantial strategic potential for sustainable coffee agroforestry development through integrated management strategies that optimize local resources, strengthen institutional collaboration, improve supporting facilities, and promote ecological and economic sustainability.

Abstract

Corn is a strategic commodity for Gorontalo Province because it supports food security, farmer income, regional agribusiness development, and export-oriented agricultural competitiveness. However, corn productivity and export sustainability in the region are still constrained by production risks, limited post-harvest facilities, weak institutional support, and market access challenges. This study aims to formulate and prioritize strategies for improving corn productivity and export sustainability in Gorontalo Province using an integrated SWOT-AHP approach. Data were collected through surveys of 98 corn farmers, stakeholder interviews, field observations, and expert judgment. SWOT analysis was used to identify internal and external strategic factors related to cultivation, post-harvest, distribution, and institutional aspects, while AHP was applied to determine the priority weights of criteria, sub-criteria, and alternative strategies. The SWOT results show that weaknesses were more dominant than strengths, and threats were more dominant than opportunities, placing corn farming in the WT quadrant with coordinates of X = −0.53 and Y = −0.64. This indicates that the appropriate strategic direction is a defensive strategy, emphasizing the minimization of internal weaknesses and the anticipation of external threats. The AHP results show that production was the highest priority criterion (0.39), followed by post-harvest (0.31), institutional aspects (0.22), and distribution (0.08). At the sub-criteria level, productivity improvement obtained the highest priority weight (0.67). The main alternative strategy was pest and disease control (0.46), followed by the addition of harvest and post-harvest facilities (0.18) and seed quality improvement (0.16). These findings indicate that strategies to improve corn productivity and export sustainability in Gorontalo should prioritize risk management in production, post-harvest infrastructure improvements, and support for quality seed. The study provides practical guidance for local government, extension officers, farmer groups, and agribusiness actors in strengthening the competitiveness of Gorontalo corn.
