Abstract

Comprehensive sex education (CSE) is a foundational element for promoting gender equity, sexual autonomy, and reproductive health among adolescents. However, sociocultural taboos and limited institutional support often hinder its effective delivery, particularly in contexts marked by gendered power imbalances. This study aimed to explore female adolescents’ perceptions of sex education in a vocational high school setting, assess the extent of their knowledge, and examine how these perceptions are shaped by broader gender norms and institutional factors. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 30 tenth-grade female students at Taruna Tekno Nusantara Vocational High School in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Data were collected using a validated structured questionnaire focusing on knowledge levels, attitudes toward sex education, and opinions on its delivery through schools. Descriptive analysis was conducted using JASP version 19. Findings reveal that 66.7% of students were only somewhat knowledgeable about sex education, and an identical proportion deemed it unimportant. However, 73.3% recognized its critical role in enhancing reproductive health literacy and shaping respectful gender interactions. While 53.3% supported school-based sex education, 46.7% remained opposed, reflecting persistent sociocultural resistance. The study highlights a disjunction between adolescents’ knowledge and the recognized importance of sex education, underscoring how internalized gender norms and inadequate institutional engagement perpetuate informational and empowerment gaps. Embedding CSE within rights-based, participatory, and gender-transformative frameworks is vital for promoting health equity and fostering adolescent agency.

Abstract

Indonesia remains one of the ASEAN countries that has not fully implemented a smoke-free zone policy (SFZ). SFZ policies can prevent air pollution that can cause pneumonia. The novelty of this study lies in its analysis of SFZ policies based on the level of regional regulations, namely Regional Regulations and Mayor/Regent Regulations, which are linked to pneumonia cases in infants, utilizing national data with a large sample size to provide empirical evidence as a basis for strengthening SFZ policy implementation in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the relationship between SFZ policies and pneumonia cases in infants in Indonesia. This study used a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 284,177 respondents, and the study sample consisted of 49,747 respondents. This study used the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey questionnaire as an instrument and used the chi-square test with JASP version 19 software for data analysis. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant relationship between the form of implementation of SFZ policies at the district/city level (p=0.045) and no significant relationship in the implementation of SFZ across provinces in Indonesia (p=0.162; PR=1.159), districts/cities that implemented SFZ (p=0.664; PR=1.059), the duration of SFZ implementation in districts/cities (p=0.269; PR=0.891), fathers' smoking behavior (p=0.867; PR=0.983), and mothers' smoking behavior (p=0.1; PR=1.938). It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the form of local regulations/mayor/regent regulations on SFZ and the incidence of pneumonia in infants in Indonesia with p=0.045. These findings emphasize the importance of the government's role in strengthening the implementation of SFZ policies through improved monitoring, enforcement, and integrated evaluation.  Policy strengthening can be achieved through regulations accompanied by strict sanctions, data-based monitoring by the Ministry of Health, and continuous education on the dangers of thirdhand smoke for parents.  In addition, the results also indicate that the gender of mothers as primary caregivers plays an important role in protecting infants from exposure to cigarette smoke. Therefore, empowering mothers through improved health literacy and social support is crucial to reducing the risk of pneumonia in toddlers. Districts/cities that do not yet have smoke-free policies are expected to formulate them immediately, while the wider community is expected to actively participate in supporting the implementation of smoke-free policies to protect toddlers from the dangers of smoking.

Abstract

The most common problem faced by healthcare workers, especially nurses, is work- related fatigue, which can lead to decreased work productivity and quality of care. This study aims to determine the differences in work fatigue levels among nurses who listen to the recitation of the Quran while working at Malahayati Islamic Hospital and Haji Medan General Hospital. This study uses a comparative design with a cross- sectional approach. The study population consists of 156 nurses at Malahayati Islamic Hospital and 362 nurses at Haji Medan General Hospital. The sample consisted of nurses from both hospitals selected through purposive sampling, totaling 60 respondents. Data were collected using the KAUPK2 questionnaire to measure work fatigue levels, and a Mann-Whitney statistical test was conducted to analyze differences between the two groups. The results of this study indicate a significant difference in work fatigue levels between nurses who were consistently given Quran recitation and those who were not consistently given Quran recitation, with nurses who were consistently given Quran recitation tending to have lower fatigue levels compared to those who were not consistently given Quran recitation, with a p-value of 0.013 (<0.05). The conclusion of this study is that Quran recitation can be an alternative intervention to reduce work fatigue levels among nurses. It is hoped that hospitals will consider incorporating Quran recitation as part of their efforts to improve the well-being of healthcare workers.

Abstract

Anemia is a common health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia, primarily due to iron deficiency. Anemia prevention efforts can be achieved by increasing the consumption of iron-rich regional foods, such as green spinach. This study aimed to determine the organoleptic properties (color, aroma, taste, and texture) and nutritional content, particularly iron content, of chips with the addition of green spinach flour. The study was conducted in Denai Kuala Village, Pantai Labu District. This study used an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) design. There was one control group and three treatments, each with the addition of green spinach flour (F0 = 0 g, F1 = 20 g, F2 = 40 g, and F3 = 60 g), with three replications. The results were analyzed using ANOVA. If a significant effect was found, the results were followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DRR). Organoleptic testing was conducted on 30 panelists of adolescent girls aged 14-20 years. The results showed that F1 was the most preferred sample by the panelists, with average scores for color (4.03), aroma (4.13), taste (3.43), and texture (3.47). Meanwhile, F3 had the highest iron content (100.2 mg/kg).

Abstract

Iced sugarcane juice that contains coliform bacteria indicates the presence of microbiological contamination. Contamination by pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli can lead to various health problems, including gastrointestinal infections, diarrhea, and other diseases. This study aims to analyze the relationship between hygiene and sanitation practices and the presence of Escherichia coli in iced sugarcane juice sold in Tebing Tinggi City. This research is a quantitative study with an observational design using a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all iced sugarcane juice vendors in Tebing Tinggi City (57 vendors), with 31 selected as samples through simple random sampling. Laboratory testing was conducted at the Public Health Laboratory Center (BLKM) in Medan. Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between hygiene and sanitation variables (p = 0.043; PR = 3.259), food handler hygiene (p = 0.027; PR = 1.943), equipment sanitation (p = 0.032; PR = 1.789), and sanitation facilities (p = 0.045; PR = 1.579) with the presence of Escherichia coli in iced sugarcane juice sold in Tebing Tinggi City. It is expected that iced sugarcane juice vendors implement proper hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent microbiological contamination and protect consumer health.

Abstract

Cassava peel flour offers potential as a sustainable and nutritious ingredient for food diversification. This study evaluated the sensory acceptability and nutritional value of cassava peel flour chips produced in Pantai Labu Baru Village, North Sumatra. A randomized complete design (CRD) with four formulations (F0 = 0%, F1 = 20%, F2 = 30%, F3 = 40% cassava peel flour) and three replicates was applied. Twenty untrained panelists aged 18-25 years participated in sensory testing under ethical consent and the sensory evaluation code of ethics, using 3-digit blinding codes and randomized sample order. Each chip sample (≈30 °C) was evaluated for color, aroma, taste, and texture, with water provided for rinsing between samples. Data were analyzed using RM-ANOVA (Friedman test as non-parametric confirmation), followed by post-hoc Duncan and effect-size reporting (η²). Nutritional composition (AOAC/ISO methods) included proximate, energy, Ca, P, crude fiber, and oil content; HCN levels were tested in raw flour and final products after detoxification (soaking 3 days, 5% salt, 1:4 w/v water ratio). Results showed significant sensory differences (p < 0.05); F1 and F2 achieved the highest acceptability, with balanced color, aroma, and texture. Calcium and phosphorus contents increased with substitution up to 30%, reaching 0.13% Ca and 0.10% P in F2. Higher levels (F3) reduced sensory appeal and calcium retention, likely due to heat degradation and fiber-mineral interaction. HCN content was reduced to < 1 mg/kg after detoxification. Incomplete data on lipid oxidation and microbiological stability were noted as study limitations and will be addressed in further research. These findings indicate that moderate substitution (20-30%) optimizes sensory quality and mineral enhancement, supporting cassava peel utilization as a nutritious, eco-friendly food material.

Abstract

This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional design and a total sampling technique on 35 couriers of PT. Nusantara Ekspres, Cinta Damai Branch to analyze the relationship between workload (NASA-TLX) and work fatigue (KAUPK2) with work productivity. The NASA-TLX instrument consists of six dimensions (mental, physical, time pressure, performance, frustration, and effort) with a scale of 0-100 categorized from low to very high. Work fatigue was measured by KAUPK2 (20 items, α = 0.89 in the Indonesian population) and classified into low-high categories. Productivity was measured through a standardized questionnaire and an objective indicator of ≥150 packages/day from the company's internal application data. The Pearson correlation test results showed a positive relationship between workload and productivity (r = 0.442; 95% CI 0.15-0.67; p = 0.008) and a negative relationship between work fatigue and productivity (r = -0.346; 95% CI -0.60 to -0.04; p = 0.042). This analysis indicates an association (not a causal relationship) between workload and fatigue with productivity. Limitations of this study include the small sample size, the data did not consider confounding factors such as age, tenure, route length, weather conditions, and working hours, and the potential for single method bias. Implementation recommendations include scheduling micro-breaks, rotating heavy/light routes, and using NASA-TLX thresholds as indicators of OHS interventions to maintain a balance between workload, fatigue, and productivity.

Abstract

The integration of e-learning in higher education encounters intricate problems, including the gender-based digital divide, which may impact equitable access to education. This study seeks to examine the evolution and execution of e-learning through a gender lens within the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Sharia and Law, UIN Sumatera Utara. Data were obtained utilizing a descriptive qualitative methodology through observation, in-depth interviews with 10% of students (randomly selected to ensure balanced gender representation) and instructors, as well as document analysis and literature reviews. The data analysis utilized qualitative methods incorporating a gender analysis framework. The research findings reveal: (1) merely 30% of lecturers utilize e-learning; (2) a gender disparity exists in technological access, with female students experiencing restricted access to personal devices; (3) digital literacy varies by gender owing to unequal socialization and opportunities; (4) participation trends indicate that female students prefer textual contributions over oral communication; (5) the dual burden of domestic responsibilities impedes the full participation of female students and lecturers. Obstacles encompass the digital access divide, disparities in digital literacy, gender norms, socio-cultural conventions, and insufficient gender-sensitive training. This study advocates for the formulation of gender-responsive e-learning policies, the enhancement of equitable technology access, the provision of inclusive digital literacy training, the creation of gender-neutral material, and the establishment of a gender-based monitoring system to guarantee equality in Islamic higher education.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents with intellectual disabilities face significant challenges in understanding sexual and reproductive health (SRH) due to cognitive limitations, stigma, and lack of appropriate education. Parents, particularly mothers, play a central role in supporting their daughters’ self-care and protection during puberty. Objective: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of mothers in providing sexual and reproductive health education to adolescent girls with intellectual disabilities. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological approach was used, involving in-depth semi-structured interviews with five mothers selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method, followed by member checking, triangulation, and audit trails to ensure credibility. Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of Universitas Sumatera Utara. Results: Five main themes emerged: (1) mothers’ emotional journey, (2) understanding of sexual and reproductive health, (3) communication and parenting strategies, (4) social and cultural barriers, and (5) support and coping mechanisms. Mothers experienced mixed emotions—fear, shame, love, and responsibility—while navigating social stigma and limited knowledge. Conclusion: Mothers’ experiences reflect the complexity of raising daughters with intellectual disabilities within cultural and religious contexts. The findings highlight the importance of inclusive, family-centered SRHR education and psychological support to empower parents in guiding and protecting their children.

Abstract

The issue of waste is a very pressing matter that requires serious attention because it has a direct impact on the environment, health, and the sustainability of human life. This study aims to increase the knowledge and attitudes of Islamic boarding school students. The objective of the study is to improve knowledge and attitudes to care for and heal Islamic boarding school students through the synergy of Islamic ecotheology and counseling in waste education. The type of research used in this study is quasi-experimental research with a one-group pretest-posttest design. This study involved 30 santri who were selected purposively based on recommendations from the pesantren. The statistical test used was the Paired Sample t-Test with the help of JASP version 16 computer software. The results of this study show that interventions in the form of counseling can significantly improve the knowledge and attitudes of santri regarding Islamic ecotheology and waste management in pesantren. The Wilcoxon test results showed a significant increase in knowledge (p < 0.001), while the Paired Sample t-Test showed an increase in attitude from an average score of 26.60 on the pretest to 36.10 on the posttest with a p-value < 0.001. This confirms that counseling not only improves conceptual understanding but also encourages positive attitude changes that have the potential to continue in real behavior in maintaining the cleanliness and sustainability of the pesantren environment.
