Abstract

Comprehensive sex education (CSE) is a foundational element for promoting gender equity, sexual autonomy, and reproductive health among adolescents. However, sociocultural taboos and limited institutional support often hinder its effective delivery, particularly in contexts marked by gendered power imbalances. This study aimed to explore female adolescents’ perceptions of sex education in a vocational high school setting, assess the extent of their knowledge, and examine how these perceptions are shaped by broader gender norms and institutional factors. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 30 tenth-grade female students at Taruna Tekno Nusantara Vocational High School in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Data were collected using a validated structured questionnaire focusing on knowledge levels, attitudes toward sex education, and opinions on its delivery through schools. Descriptive analysis was conducted using JASP version 19. Findings reveal that 66.7% of students were only somewhat knowledgeable about sex education, and an identical proportion deemed it unimportant. However, 73.3% recognized its critical role in enhancing reproductive health literacy and shaping respectful gender interactions. While 53.3% supported school-based sex education, 46.7% remained opposed, reflecting persistent sociocultural resistance. The study highlights a disjunction between adolescents’ knowledge and the recognized importance of sex education, underscoring how internalized gender norms and inadequate institutional engagement perpetuate informational and empowerment gaps. Embedding CSE within rights-based, participatory, and gender-transformative frameworks is vital for promoting health equity and fostering adolescent agency.

Abstract

Indonesia remains one of the ASEAN countries that has not fully implemented a smoke-free zone policy (SFZ). SFZ policies can prevent air pollution that can cause pneumonia. The novelty of this study lies in its analysis of SFZ policies based on the level of regional regulations, namely Regional Regulations and Mayor/Regent Regulations, which are linked to pneumonia cases in infants, utilizing national data with a large sample size to provide empirical evidence as a basis for strengthening SFZ policy implementation in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the relationship between SFZ policies and pneumonia cases in infants in Indonesia. This study used a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 284,177 respondents, and the study sample consisted of 49,747 respondents. This study used the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey questionnaire as an instrument and used the chi-square test with JASP version 19 software for data analysis. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant relationship between the form of implementation of SFZ policies at the district/city level (p=0.045) and no significant relationship in the implementation of SFZ across provinces in Indonesia (p=0.162; PR=1.159), districts/cities that implemented SFZ (p=0.664; PR=1.059), the duration of SFZ implementation in districts/cities (p=0.269; PR=0.891), fathers' smoking behavior (p=0.867; PR=0.983), and mothers' smoking behavior (p=0.1; PR=1.938). It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between the form of local regulations/mayor/regent regulations on SFZ and the incidence of pneumonia in infants in Indonesia with p=0.045. These findings emphasize the importance of the government's role in strengthening the implementation of SFZ policies through improved monitoring, enforcement, and integrated evaluation.  Policy strengthening can be achieved through regulations accompanied by strict sanctions, data-based monitoring by the Ministry of Health, and continuous education on the dangers of thirdhand smoke for parents.  In addition, the results also indicate that the gender of mothers as primary caregivers plays an important role in protecting infants from exposure to cigarette smoke. Therefore, empowering mothers through improved health literacy and social support is crucial to reducing the risk of pneumonia in toddlers. Districts/cities that do not yet have smoke-free policies are expected to formulate them immediately, while the wider community is expected to actively participate in supporting the implementation of smoke-free policies to protect toddlers from the dangers of smoking.

Abstract

The most common problem faced by healthcare workers, especially nurses, is work- related fatigue, which can lead to decreased work productivity and quality of care. This study aims to determine the differences in work fatigue levels among nurses who listen to the recitation of the Quran while working at Malahayati Islamic Hospital and Haji Medan General Hospital. This study uses a comparative design with a cross- sectional approach. The study population consists of 156 nurses at Malahayati Islamic Hospital and 362 nurses at Haji Medan General Hospital. The sample consisted of nurses from both hospitals selected through purposive sampling, totaling 60 respondents. Data were collected using the KAUPK2 questionnaire to measure work fatigue levels, and a Mann-Whitney statistical test was conducted to analyze differences between the two groups. The results of this study indicate a significant difference in work fatigue levels between nurses who were consistently given Quran recitation and those who were not consistently given Quran recitation, with nurses who were consistently given Quran recitation tending to have lower fatigue levels compared to those who were not consistently given Quran recitation, with a p-value of 0.013 (<0.05). The conclusion of this study is that Quran recitation can be an alternative intervention to reduce work fatigue levels among nurses. It is hoped that hospitals will consider incorporating Quran recitation as part of their efforts to improve the well-being of healthcare workers.
