Abstract

Effective communication is vital for humans as social beings, especially in EFL contexts. Speaking skills such as fluency and accuracy are essential, and emotional factors like motivation and self-confidence significantly influence learners’ performance. Although these predictors are widely recognized, their relationships with speaking proficiency are interpreted differently across studies, indicating a need for further research to develop an effective instructional model. This study adopted a quantitative correlational approach to investigate the associations between motivation and self-confidence as predictor variables, and speaking fluency and accuracy as outcome variables, both individually and collectively. Data were collected from 60 respondents through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and linear regression. Results indicated a moderate correlation between motivation and speaking fluency (r = 0.406), and between self-confidence and fluency (r = 0.559). For speaking accuracy, motivation showed a low correlation (r = 0.324), while self-confidence had a moderate correlation (r = 0.491). Simultaneously, the predictors showed moderate correlations with fluency (R = 0.559) and accuracy (R = 0.493). The influence values were 0.313 for fluency and 0.243 for accuracy, indicating that motivation and self-confidence contributed 31.3% and 24.3% to students’ speaking fluency and accuracy, respectively.

Abstract

This article examines the poem “Sebelum Nyawa Terlepas Raga” by Hartono “John Witir” as a literary work that reflects spiritual and religious values, particularly in the context of awareness of the afterlife. This poem explicitly serves as an invitation for self-reflection on worldly arrogance that has the potential to distance individuals from God, as well as a warning about the dangers of pride that can cloud one’s conscience. This study aims to elucidate the religious educational ideology contained in the poem. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the object of study is the poem ‘“Sebelum Nyawa Terlepas Raga” itself. The analysis was conducted by applying hermeneutic theory, utilising quotations from the poem that directly represent religious educational values. The data collection process involved three stages: collection, reduction, and presentation of data. Subsequently, the data were analysed descriptively to produce an accurate and comprehensive picture of the characteristics and interconnections of the elements under study. The findings of this study indicate that the poem “Sebelum Nyawa Terlepas Raga” by Hartono “John Witir” contains dimensions of religious relationships that include interactions between humans and God, humans and their fellow humans, and humans and themselves. Of these three forms of religious relationships, the relationship between humans and God is the most dominant aspect in this poem. Abstract

This research explores the impact of conservative societal norms and the influence of homophobic parents on the homosexual protagonist, Shailendra, as depicted in Adelina Ayu’s Happy Ending Machine. Against the background of a society rooted in Indonesia’s traditional values, Shailendra’s journey unfolds, emphasizing the broader challenges faced by queer individuals navigating the conflict between personal authenticity and societal expectations. Using a qualitative literary analysis, this study explores the emotional and mental impact experienced by Shailendra as he struggles with societal norms, adopts a ‘closeted’ personality, and develops trust issues. The findings underscore the deep impact of conservative societal norms, depicting Shailendra’s struggles as representative of the broader challenges experienced by queer individuals in a society that refuses to accept them. In conclusion, this research advocates for societal empathy and inclusivity, encouraging the creation of an environment where diverse identities can thrive without fear of judgment or discrimination. Shailendra’s narrative in Happy Ending Machine serves as a poignant depiction of the complexities inherent in the intersection between personal identity and societal norms, highlighting the need for a more compassionate and understanding society

Abstract

Teachers’ success in teaching and learning process depends on how she/he propel his/her students to learn. There are two contradictory points of view. On one hand, teachers want their students to become active and self-confident in learning, while on the other hand, students consider that the process of teaching and learning activities is the teachers’ responsibility. This often makes students passive, and they just sit and wait for whatever the teachers are going to give them. The teacher has responsibilities not only for giving the input of transferring knowledge or competence, but also teaching them how to study. The purpose of writing this paper is to provide an alternative to improving the process of teaching and learning activities. It is based on the observation that reading comprehension is still at a low level, and it should be improved. The improvement can be done through more exposure to learning strategies. Students’ self-consciousness on how important learning strategies are makes students to autonomous. It is suggested to do more seminars and research on language learning strategies for making the improve of teaching and learning quality and to gain more knowledge and experience.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study was aimed to evaluate two contrasting perspectives on learning English. The first perspective suggests that learning grammar is not too important to be able to speak English. It argues that since native English speakers do not consciously follow grammar rules, learners should focus on speaking practice instead of worrying about grammar. The second perspective argues that the importance of learning grammar is to construct proper sentences in conversations. It believes that mastering grammar is essential for effectively learning English and that excluding grammar makes learning the language impossible. To evaluate these viewpoints, informal conversations and a monologue by three purposively selected native English speakers from an English Talk Show, Sitcom, and Vlog on YouTube were analysed using a thematic analysis. The data were collected through a combination of non-participant and structured observations. The findings revealed that, contrary to the first perspective, native English speakers consistently use proper grammar, even in informal contexts.   Keywords: English Talk show, Grammar and Structure Usage, Sitcom, Vlog

Abstract

This study explores the internal and external conflicts experienced by the married couple in Noah Baumbach’s 2009 film Marriage Story. The research examines how these conflicts unfold within the narrative and how they affect the characters’ relationship and family dynamics. Data for this study were obtained through library research and documentation methods, allowing for a comprehensive review of both primary and secondary sources related to the film. The analysis focuses on both intrinsic and extrinsic elements, employing textual, contextual, and qualitative approaches based on the theoretical frameworks of Kenney (1996) and Bernhardt (1953). These approaches are used to interpret the character development and the thematic portrayal of marital struggle. The findings reveal that the couple's conflicts are not merely circumstantial but are deeply rooted in the individual behaviours, personalities, and emotional responses of each character. Ultimately, the study highlights how personal flaws and miscommunication contribute significantly to the deterioration of their marriage and the emotional impact it has on their family unit. Abstract

ABSTRACT: In the context of psychoanalytic theory, the structure of human personality consists of three main parts: the Id, the Ego, and the Superego. The Id is the unconscious part driven by instincts and basic needs, the Ego tries to satisfy the basic needs of the Id realistically and according to the norms instilled by the Superego, and the Superego which is the socially accepted moral aspect. The purpose of this study is to explain and describe the forms of Id, Ego, and Superego in the narrator and main character in the novel Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. The method used in this study is a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The theory used is Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory with a Literary Psychology approach. The result of this study is that Id is more dominant in Stargirl, Ego and Superego is more dominant in Leo. The discussion of this research is that Stargirl's Id is described as something that is difficult to understand and difficult to hold. Leo's ego is described as reflecting an attempt to find a balance between individual desires and the demands of social normal, Leo's superego wants to show society the true name Stargirl. In conclusion, Stargirl novels depict the complex dynamics between id, ego, and superego in shaping characters and influencing their actions.   Keywords: Psyche, Psychology, Psychoanalysis, Id, Ego, Superego

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyze verb tense usage in the lyrics of Jamie Miller’s Broken Memories album, with three primary objectives: to classify the types of tenses used, quantify their frequency to identify temporal patterns, and examine their function in narrative construction through Labov’s (2008) pre-construction framework. Adopting a qualitative approach, this research analyzed lyrics obtained through triangulated sources, including Genius.com and official streaming platforms, and cross-referenced them with auditory verification. The data were processed using computational tagging and thematic coding to identify grammatical patterns. Findings reveal that the simple past tense dominates, often reflecting personal memories and emotional retrospection, while the present tense establishes immediacy and intimacy. The occasional use of the future tense suggests uncertainty and aspiration. These tense patterns support emotional storytelling and reflect mental narrative structuring by songwriters. The study concludes that grammar in popular music operates beyond conventional rules, functioning as a creative tool for emotional expression and audience engagement. Future research is encouraged to explore broader datasets across artists, as well as include modality, voice, and listener reception to deepen understanding of grammatical strategies in musical narratives. Keywords: Verb Tenses, Frequency, Narrative Function, Broken Memories, Pre-Construction Framework
