Abstract

Research on the use of rice straw as a feed has been widely done but the adoption at the farmer’s business level is still low. Perception of the farmers is one of the key factors in increasing the adoption of rice straw utilization as a feed. The aims of this study were to determine the level of farmers’ perceptions of the use of rice straw as a feed and factors that affect it. The study was conducted in the Bantimurung sub-district, which is the center of beef cattle and technical irrigated lowland rice. The number of respondents was 65 people who were randomly selected out of 325 farmers (20% of the population) by enumerators who had been trained. The variable measured was the level of perceptions of the farmers in fulfilling the livestock needs and the ability of the farmers in providing rice straw as a feed. The independent variable included the socio-economic factors of the farmers, consisting of age, number of livestock, number of family members, number of rice fields area, and level of education. Data were analyzed using multiple regression models using the F and t-test. The results showed that the level of perception of the farmers in fulfilling livestock needs was in less category. The level of perceptions of the farmers towards their ability in providing rice straw as feed was in the high category. Factors that influence their level of perception were the number of livestock and the number of family members. The number of livestock had a negative effect (P< 0.01) on the level of farmer perception, in which the higher the number of livestock owned by the farmers, the less level of the farmer's perception towards the use of rice straw as feed. The number of the family had a positive effect (P<0.01) on the level of the farmer perception meaning that the higher the number of the family members, the higher the level of the farmer's perception towards the use of rice straw as a feed.

Abstract

The research aimed to assess body weight respons of broiler chickens with various body weights (BW) at hatch when subjected to post-hatched fasting and its subsequent impact on the final body weight. Two hundred and sixteen unsexed broiler chickens, strain Cobb aged 12 hours post-hatch, were randomly assigned into floor pen (six chicks per pen). The research was arranged in a 3 x 4 factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design with three replications for each treatment combination. The first factor was the BW at hatch, i.e. light (30.1±0.39g), medium ((33.3±0.44g), and heavy (33.3±0.44g). The second factor was the duration of post-hatched fasting, i.e. 24, 36, 48, and 60 h, respectively. All chickens were weighed at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 h post hatch, then at 7 and 35 days of age. Data analysis indicated that the BW of chicken subjected to fasting at 48 to 60 h post-hatch decreased significantly at the rate of 8.6% and 12.5% of the initial body weight, respectively. However, this condition was not related to the initial body weight status of the chicken. Availability of feed after the fasting period was not sufficient to compensate retardation of body weight of the chicken subjected to fasting 48-60 h post-hatch.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to determine the effectivity of the dietary inclusion of red guava fruit on the production capability of broiler chicken. An amount of 120 birds of unsex broiler chicken were randomly assigned in floor pen based on a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 replications consisted of 6 chicken each. Dietary treatments of the inclusion of red guava fruit were offered for 4 weeks, i.e.: without red guava (T0), 1.7% (T1), 3.4% (T2), and 5.1% (T3) respectively red guava fruit meal and diet with synthetic vitamin C (T4). The parameters measured were production capability (muscle protein and calcium mass, carcass weight, meat, and bone production). The results showed that muscle protein mass, calcium mass and bone production showed no significant differences (P>0.05) due to the treatments. Weight of carcass of T2 was significantly highest (617.75 g) compared to other treatments and meat production was significantly higher (259.25 g) compared to T4 (193.25 g), but not significant differences compared to other treatments. The results of the present study can be concluded that feeding red guava fruit meal at the level of 3.4% equal to 500 ppm vitamin C as a source of  natural antioxidant can improve production capability.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain the quality of broiler skin food gelatin that gets the old treatment of immersion and concentration different NaOH. This research was compiled by Randomized Complete Random Factor (RAL) 3 x 3 factorial design. Factor 1 was curing period (8, 16 and 24 h, respectively) and factor 2 was NaOH concentration level (1, 2 and 3%, respectively). Each unit of the experiment uses 200 grams of broiler skin foot (shank). The instruments used were analytical scales, beaker, tracing paper, scissors, cutter, plastic container for soaking, water bath, Erlenmeyer, stirrer, thermometer, sieve, oven, crusher, mold, pH meter, and texture analyzer. The variables observed in the experiment were the yield, acidity (pH) and gel strength. The results showed the highest average of gelatin content at 2% NaOH concentration of 15.71%. The degree of acidity (pH) shows that the longer the immersion time (24 hours) and the higher the NaOH concentration (3%) the higher the resulting pH. The strength of the gel (gram bloom) showed that the 1% NaOH concentration that formed the gel at 24 hours of immersion was 178.15 grams bloom.

Abstract

One problem in the application of biotechnology in spermatozoa sexing of X and Y sperm chromosome is a decrease in motility and percentage of live spermatozoa. The decrease could be caused by metabolic process, therefore spare energy obtained from separation medium is decreasing resulting in decrease in motility and percentage of live spermatozoa.  Research was carried out to evaluate the effects of separation medium, addition of coffee extract before sexing of X and Y sperm chromosome, and storage period on the quality of goat fresh semen.  This experiment was performed according to completely randomized design in factorial pattern (2 x 2 x 6). The first factor was the separation medium (A1: 10% and A2: 30%), the second factor was the coffee extract addition (B1: 0 mM and B2: 3 mM), and the third factor was the period of storage(D1: 0 hour, D2: 2 hours, D3: 4 hours, D4: 6 hours, D5: 8 hours and D6: 10 hours). The result showed that the motility of spermatozoa Y in 30% separation medium was higher (P<0.01) than that of spermatozoa X in 10% separation medium and it was higher (P<0.05) with addition of coffee extract compared with no coffee extract addition.  Viability of spermatozoa Y was higher (P<0.05) compared with spermatozoa X and addition of coffee extract not significantly different (P>0.05) compared with no coffee extract addition. The motility and viability of spermatozoa decreased during 10 hours storage. It was concluded that the motility and viability of spermatozoa Y was higher than spermatozoa X. Coffee extract can prevent a decrease of spermatozoa motility during storage. The motility of spermatozoa and the percentage of live spermatozoa decreased during storage.
