Abstract

This writing aims to determine the capacity of law higher education and law students in creating law enforcers who have integrity, professionalism, and are able to realize legal justice. The method used is descriptive qualitative method through a phenomenological approach, we examine data using critical data coding, in-depth interpretation and drawing conclusions which are answers to this research question by adhering to the principles of high validity and reliability. Next, we describe the data in the findings section by adding criticism and discussion to understand whether this data is relevant to answering the problem. For the reporting stage, we choose qualitative data reporting depending on data or literature review, which we limit to information and data released between 2010 and 2021 to find the latest information and data. Law enforcement in Indonesia that does not synergize with one another will hinder realization of justice. Therefore the existence of law higher education and law students as the forerunner of law enforcement must be questioned. The results of this study are that law enforcement in Indonesia still shows ineffectiveness in its operations. So the authors suggest that higher education in law must be oriented towards efforts to provide stimulus to students so that they are able to have critical, analytical, innovative and progressive thinking so that the essence of law enforcement, namely justice, can be achieved.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the educational terrain from face-to-face to distance learning. In the Philippines, the Department of Education implemented different distance learning modalities such as modular distance learning, online distance learning, TV/radio-based instruction, and blended distance learning to continue education delivery. Consequently, this study explored senior high school students' experiences using metacognitive strategies to solve pre-calculus problems in distance learning through a phenomenological approach to qualitative research. Using purposive sampling, the researchers selected ten senior high school students from Marinduque and Palawan. They conducted two sets of online interviews via Google Meet to elicit students' experiences, views, and opinions regarding their metacognitive strategies in solving problems in pre-calculus. During the first set, all participants were involved, while they chose only three to proceed to the second set of interviews. They crafted the open-ended questions they utilized in the online interviews according to the research questions. The recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis. The results revealed that (1) students' metacognitive strategies for solving problems in pre-calculus include planning, monitoring, and evaluating the solution and final answer. Also, (2) students perceived their metacognitive strategies as practical tools to overcome difficulties in solving pre-calculus problems in distance learning. Further, (3) students recognized their metacognitive strategies in solving problems in pre-calculus as applicable in making decisions in real-life and pursuing lifelong learning.

Abstract

COVID-19 poses significant risks to global education. It has shifted traditional learning in the classroom to remote learning at home. The Department of Education initiated a continuity plan in the Philippines that applies a remote learning approach. In remote learning, parents became active participants by being solid scaffolds for their children's learning at home. Through a phenomenological design, the study explored the lived experiences of parents during the pandemic times. The data was gathered through one-on-one interviews with each of the six parent participants, with strict observance of basic IATF protocols like mask-wearing and social distancing. The collected responses were transcribed, examined, coded, and broken down into themes. After data analysis, three significant themes emerged: the description of parents' experiences in scaffolding their children's remote learning, the help extended by the parents to minimize academic stress, and the effects of remote learning on their children's education. The analyzed data revealed that parents became successful scaffolders amid the struggles and lack thereof. Furthermore, parents realized that, while remote learning may not be the best option for their children due to demotivation in learning, it is one way to keep their children safe while learning. Based on the findings, significant measures may be adopted by the Department of Education, teachers, parents, and future researchers, particularly in enhancing modules and learning environments that are more learner-centered.

Abstract

Given the nature of the teacher’s job, it is expected that they have many workloads, both teaching-related and other functions. Literature suggests that too much workload for teachers may affect their teaching performance. In addition, work motivation is another factor affecting teachers’ performance, with studies suggesting that those who have high motivation also have the driving mechanism to accomplish tasks. Considering the challenging tasks teachers face on daily basis, this study aims to examine how workload and motivation influence teacher performance. Using descriptive-correlational research, a survey was conducted to 45 teachers of Butuan Central Elementary School to determine the influence of their workload and level of motivation on their performance. Results showed that 62% of the participants have an ideal workload of 2,400 minutes per week and only 29% are overloaded. In terms of motivation, results showed that the participants’ level of motivation is highly observed (M=4.15). This study also looked into the relationship among work performance, length of service, education, and age. It was found that only length of service has a significant correlation with performance, although both are negatively correlated (r= -0.359, p=.015). Moreover, the relationship among performance, workload and motivation was also examined. It was found that there is no significant relationship between performance and workload (r= -0.014, p=0.928) and performance and motivation (r=0.009, p=0.954). Overall, results of this study suggest that the length of service has a significant negative relationship with performance, while teachers’ workload and work motivation have no influence on their teaching performance.
