Abstract

Learning materials aid conceptual retention, stir learning motivation, increase academic engagement, and enhance student achievement. This study is a descriptive-evaluative research that described the science teachers’ assessment of the Grade 8 Science K12 learner’s material produced by the state education department. The study was conducted in three government-owned secondary schools in Zambales, Philippines. The science teachers used a modified Learning Resource Assessment Tool developed by Prince Edward Island (2008) in evaluating the K12 material. Results revealed that the learner’s material is satisfactory in terms of content, instructional design, and technical design. However, the teachers cited some problems encountered, such as inadequacy of the materials for the learners, the incongruence of the topics to the learning competencies, and lack of instructional time to cover all the topics. The teachers also laid some recommendations that can be forwarded to the Department of Education to review, refine, revise and re-align the learner’s material to make it research-based, relevant, and responsive to the learners' needs.

Abstract

Home-school collaboration is a valuable strategy for fostering independent learning. Hence, it must be explored in the context of the new normal where the printed modular learning modality is the widely chosen learning delivery among public schools across the country. This study explored how home-school collaboration cultivates and fosters students’ independent learning in the new normal across the districts of Bilar, Batuan, Carmen, and Sierra Bullones, Division of Bohol, as of the school year 2021 – 2022, with the end goal of proposing a home-school program initiative. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed through an open-ended survey method and semi-structured interview to gather the required data. Thematic Analysis was used in making sense of the data. The results revealed that home school collaboration involves providing the necessary learning resources and exerting efforts to support independent learning. Learning resources were key instructional or supplemental in nature. Efforts exerted by the people behind this collaboration include parent-teacher partnerships, the provision of learning resources, and remedial instruction. The themes that emerged from the discussion showed that the collaborative efforts between teachers and parents fostered independent learning, which has a facilitative effect on their cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. Thus, the learners evidently showed clear manifestations of independent learning, such as an optimistic attitude towards answering modules, eagerness to learn, enhanced reading performance, and a clear indication of integrity in answering their self-learning modules. However, some identified factors could hinder school-school collaborative efforts based on the participants' narratives, such as family, school-related, learning resources, and personal factors. In capsule, home-school collaboration is a valuable strategy for fostering independent learning through its facilitative effect on the learner's mind, emotion, and behaviors.

Abstract

Typical learning usually happens inside the classroom setting and having face-to-face interactions with their teachers. However, when the pandemic starts to spread, the Department of Education (DepEd) announces that education will continue through online learning. In this time of dilemma, some people are not competent enough to achieve homework and chores simultaneously. Their time management and dividing the time into a particular task is already time-consuming. This study intended to determine how senior high school students in Tondo High School handle their school tasks while in their home and also to diagnose the student's ability to utilize and manage their time, discover their methods and strategies to deal with their different responsibilities, and spot what are the effects of this set-up to the students amidst the pandemic. The researchers gathered the results by conducting an online survey in a well-mannered way through Google Forms. The students involved in the study have voluntary participation. The participants described and their experiences in the new learning system and explained their difficulties and struggles in managing their school works and obligations at home. They also included the strategies they acquired to cope up with their situation. The results of the conducted study justified that many students are having a hard time dealing with the new learning system. Such poor implementation of the learning system also exhibits poor learning effectiveness to students. Handling the new learning system and managing the responsibilities and time for school affect family engagement and the personal health of the students.

Abstract

The current Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education [MTB-MLE] policy in the Philippines is beset with numerous issues, and this adversely affects the quality of basic education provided across regions. To address this, this policy paper suggests reviewing the current MTB-MLE policy through a more systematic policy reform mechanism that is participatory. This way, all concerned stakeholders in the Filipino education community contribute to the growth of the basic education instruction in the country by ensuring proper implementation of a mother tongue-based instruction policy. Anchored on the Rational Choice Theory (Becker, 1976), which believes on the following assumptions: individualism, optimality, structures, self-regarding interests, and rationality, this policy paper suggests a framework that the Department of Education can utilize in reviewing the existing policy and creating feasible decisions to improve the instruction in basic education. The proposal also drew inspiration from how the Bilingual Education Act of the United States of America became a promising legislation that has emphasized the importance of multicultural and multilingual classrooms in the country.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the respondents' study habits and social media exposure during the school year. 2019-2020.The study's participants were 50 grade 10 students of Alabel 4 District. The researcher administered the survey to all of the student respondents. Majority of respondents were 17 years old, and the majority of their parents had a bachelor's degree and were all employed. The researcher administered the survey to all of the student respondents. The majority of respondents were 17 years old, and the majority of their parents had a bachelor's degree and were all employed. It also has a high correlation with respondents' social media exposure. The responses revealed that respondents' use of social media has a direct or indirect positive effect on their academic performance. The study suggests that parents should constantly guide and supervise their children's use of social media, particularly female and younger students who are more interested in social networking. Despite the fact that this study discovered that respondents' socio-demographic characteristics have no bearing on their academic performance. It also suggests that a long-term program be implemented to assist students in constantly improving their study habits. According to the study's findings, teachers must continue to effectively stimulate and sustain students' interests and enthusiasm for learning in order for them to consistently achieve exceptional academic performance. Teachers should receive regular service trainings and workshops to stay current on their knowledge and pedagogical skills, improve the quality of the teacher workforce, and improve students' academic achievement.

Abstract

Believing that students take several tests whose results help describe these learners, the researcher measured the correlation between the academic performance (AP) and Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT), AP and Association of Benedictine Schools Achievement Test (ABSAT), and AP and National Achievement Test (NAT), OLSAT and ABSAT, OLSAT and NAT, and ABSAT and NAT scores of the grade 6 students of a private school in Angeles City. This is a descriptive correlational study. Using frequency and percentage, the researcher described the results of the given standardized tests and the pupils’ academic performance using general weighted average. Using descriptive statistics, the researcher learned that participants had average performance in AP and the specified tests. Using Pearson r, the researcher learned that all variables registered positive results, particularly average performance. Thus, the study arrived at significant relationships between participants’ academic performance and the named tests. The study also revealed significant relationships between participants’ AP and the tests, between OLSAT and NAT, between ABSAT and OLSAT, and between ABSAT and NAT. The study implies that the school must maintain its good teaching and learning practices and innovate to capitalize and improve general performance.
