Abstract

The study is aimed to find out the textual theme meaning from the song lyrics. The problem raised in this research: What kinds of thematic meaning found in the song lyrics of “Always” by Bon Jovi?. To answer the problem, the researchers applied qualitative research. The content analysis method was adapted in this research. The method of collecting data, the researchers used documentation and literature study. The data source is the song lyrics of the “Always” song lyrics. The results of this research show that there are 64 data. The researchers finds four types are: (1) 33 data to Interjection, (2) 10 data to Causal , (3) 8 data to Additive, (4) 13 data to Adversative. The percentages in Always song lyrics are: (1) 51,56 % to Interjection (2) 15,62 % Causal, (3) 0 for Conditional, (4) 12,5 % to Additive, (5) 20,31 % to Adversative. This result of result is hoped to be useful for those who are interested in learning about functional grammar.

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyse the slang used in the song lyrics by Billie Eilish in an album. Problems raised in this research are: (1) What kinds of Slang Words used in Billie Eilish on When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Album (2) What is the most dominant type of Slang Words in Billie Eilish on When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Album. This research used Yule’s theory (2010) about types of Slang Words. The method used in this research is qualitative method. Content analysis was applied in this research. The data were the album entitled When We All Fall Asleep, Where di We Go? After conductiong the data analysis, the researchers found six types of Slang Words in lyrics of Billie Eilish they are: Coinage, Borrowing, Compounding, Blending, Clipping, Derivation. The data were collected by listening to 13 songs by Billie Eilish and reading the lyrics of the songs. There were 159 Slang Words, 21 Slang Coinage, 1 Slang of Borrowing, 1 Slang of Compounding, 102 Slang of Blending, 30 Slang of Clipping, 4 Slang of Derivation. So, Slang Words is something good to learn

Abstract

This experimental research was conducted at the speaking class English Study Program Pahlawan University. This research is aimed to find out the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy toward the students’ speaking skill. The sample of this research is speaking class as the experiment group. Experimental class consists of 23 students. Total sampling is used in this research. The instruments in collecting the data are speaking test and documentation. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 24 program. Based on the result finding, the average score in experimental class was 67,5. Based on the data Analysis of Varianceit can be seen that the class factor shows that t is 5,366 with significant (2-tailed) of 0.000 which is smaller than 0.05. It can be concluded that there is the effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy toward the students’ speaking skill at the speaking class English Study Program Pahlawan University.

Abstract

This research was due to some problems found in the field. It has been done at SMA KEC X KOTO because most of the teachers of Senior High School still used traditional technique in evaluating students’ writing. The teacher assessed only the accuracy in the use of tense and word spelling, teacher crossed out of words that are considered wrong without giving an explanation and teacher gave assessments to students’ writing without clear criteria, so that the assessment was done subjective. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The researcher used a questionnaires and documentation collect the data. The population of this research was SMA KEC X KOTO. The samples that English teacher at SMA N 1 X KOTO, SMA AL HIRA, SMA NURUL IKHLAS consist 10 teachers by using total sampling. The data were got through questionnaires consists 29 list question items that teachers must answer based on their opinion. To analyze the data, researcher used Likert Scale and then, to find out percentage of each item of questionnaire, the researcher used the formula by Sudijono p:f /n x 100% , after that researcher interpreted of the practicality percentage table. The finding reveals that Brown’s rubric using students writing at SMA X KOTO is very practical. Mostly teacher respond to every statements such as the organization which consists of 8 indicators only answer strongly agree and agree. The interpretation table shows that the percentage of teacher’s mean score was 89%. Thus, the use Brown’s rubric as a tool in assessing students writing was very practical ( 86% - 100%). It is recomended for teachers to use Brown’s Rubric. Key word: Writing, Analytic rubric, Very Practical

Abstract

Language is a system to communicate with people around us. One branch of language is pragmatic. Pragmatic is the study of contextual meaning. Contextual meaning is getting from language use or relation of language and context. Deixis is one of study in pragmatic learn about the relation of language and context. Deixis or deictic expression is an expression to indicate to the participant, time, place, discourse and social status. The aims of this research are to found types of deixis and the dominant type used in “What the old man does is always right” written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1930. The story was taken from the internet website of http://hca.gilead.org.il/old_man.html. The source of data is that short story and the data is the word in that story point to types of deixis. This research used Levinson theory in categorized types of deixis. Types of deixis based on Levinson theory are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. This research used descriptive qualitative method because the data analyzed in word form and explain the data descriptively. The data analyzed step are read the whole text, classified and analyzed based on the theory. The findings of this research are short story used five types of deixis and the dominant type used is person deixis (77.95%). The other types of deixis are time deixis (4.41%), place deixis (4.04%), discourse deixis (9.92%), and social deixis (3.68%). Deixis or deictic expression needed to have more understanding in read short story “What the old man does is always right”.

Abstract

This research investigates English teachers’ challenges and efforts in instructional practice during the pandemic outbreaks. It aims to know the English teachers’ challenges in the instructional practice during the pandemic outbreaks and to know the English teachers’ efforts during the pandemic outbreaks. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach and the data was collected through a set of questionnaire and interview. The participants are three English teachers of senior high school. The results show that there are some challenges in instructional practice; the implementation of online learning seems uneven and tends to be teachers centred, less curriculum material coverage, students were not discipline and passive in learning. It has been found also that there are some efforts to overcome the challenges during the pandemic outbreaks such as through the use of recorded videos and create good interactive lesson set to promote students’ critical thinking and encourage the students’ participation in online learning.

Abstract

This research tried to find and implement actual actions to improve the quality of reading learning process for the first year students of SMAN I Kuok. The research involved the school principal, the English teacher, the researcher, and the students of SMAN I Kuok; especially the students of class X-2 of SMAN I Kuok in the academic year of 2010/2011. They consisted of 31 students, 9 males and 22 females. The students were happy and enjoyed reading using this technique. They liked to have discussions with their friends. By having discussions, the students were able to have better understanding on reading texts than before. Their cooperation was also getting better. It implies that the English teacher can use the jigsaw technique in the teaching and learning process of reading. The students should use this technique more often in order to get better understanding to comprehend the text and better cooperation with their mates.

Abstract

This research is an quantitative research. The population of this research was the second grade of SMAN 3 Bukittinggi. in this research, the researcher used the purposive sampling technique in determining the sample. There were two classes as the sample of this research. In the experimental class the students were taught by using Extensive Reading Approach. While, in control class the students were taught by using traditional technique and both of classes were given post test at the end of meeting. In order to analyze the data, the researcher used the normality test by using Liliefors test and tested the homogeneity of the data by using F test. The researcher also used the t-test formula to test the hypothesis and consulted its result with the ttable with α = 0.05.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the students writing difficulties in recount text that faced by the students during online learning process. In performing data and data analysis qualitative research design was applied. It is based on basic interpretative analysis. It was used to describe topic related to the phenomenon happened in writing through online learning during pandemic covid-19. The object of this research was the students at tenth grade in SMA Swasta Teladan Pematangsiantar. In collecting data questionnaires were shared to 77 respondents. The research finding shows that the subjects have difficulties in writing recount text during online learning at situation of Covid-19 pandemic. The difficulties in four aspects of writing, they are sentence construction, organizing text, paragraphing aspect and text cohesion aspect. It is supported by the degree of percentage score of the questionnaires scores they are sentence construction aspect with Agree scale 55.2 %, organizing a text and paragraphing aspect with Agree scale 51.95 %, text cohesion aspect with Agree scale 51.95% and register/style aspect with Strongly Agree scale 47.5 %.
