Abstract

This research aimed at identifying the effect of Google Classroom Assisted Extensive Listening (EL) on EFL Students’ Listening Comprehension across Learning Autonomy (i.e., high learning autonomy, and low learning autonomy). There had been many studies examining the effect of EL. However, most studies focused on students’ listening comprehension without much regard in learning autonomy as one of the important key factors in EL. EL’s practice combined with technology-supported media was expected to bring a fresh idea to practitioners struggling with implementing EL. As one of the learning platforms that suited the merit of 21st-century education, Google Classroom was believed to be able to effectively alleviate both lecturers and students in utilizing EL. The research involved 78 students from two classes, which were divided into the experiment and control group. The experiment class was treated by practicing EL with the support of Google Classroom, on the other hand, the control group was treated by practicing EL by using the traditional platform (written listening journal). The students in each group were further grouped based on their autonomy level (high and low). The result of the research reveals that the mean score of the experiment group is much higher than the control class. It means that students who practiced EL with the support of Google Classroom have better listening comprehension as compared to the students who practiced EL by using the traditional platform. However, the research indicates no interaction from each learning autonomy level with the listening comprehension of both groups.

Abstract

This research was aimed at identifying the effect of using SCROL (Survey, Connection, read, Outline, Look Back) strategy toward students’ reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text. Since hortatory exposition is a type of text that influence reader to do something or act in certain way, a profound understanding of the text is something that the students should possessed. SCROL provides procedures that help students to achieve good comprehension. This researcher used a quasi-experimental design by using the pretest-posttest control group design with purposive sampling technique. The pre-test and post-test scores of the experiment class, indicate that the t-obtained (5.44) is higher than the t-table (1.68488) with degree of freedom (df) = 39 and (α) = 0.05. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and it means that there is significant effect of SCROL strategy toward the students’ reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text. The calculation of post-test both classes indicated that the t-o is (2.82) which is higher than the t-table (2, 02439), with degree of freedom 20 + 20 – 2 = 39 and (α) = 0,025. Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and it means that there is significant difference between using SCROL strategy and common strategy. Finally, t-obtained both of classes is (2.82) which is higher than t-table (1.68488) with (α) = 0. 05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and it means that SCROL strategy is better than common strategy in teaching reading comprehension on hortatory exposition text. Key Words: SCROL Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Hortatory Exposition

Abstract

In order to formulate a suitable and effective model for teaching reading in Indonesian context there are two important things that need to be considered, they are; a clear definition of what reading is which leads to the differences between reading skills and strategies and also a discussion on the differences between reading in first language, second language and foreign language. A comprehensive definition of reading will be able to answer questions on what fluent readers do when they read, what process are used by fluent readers and how do these process work together to build meaning. The answer to the questions above will also lead to the identification of reading skills. Reading strategies on the other hand, is another different concept that should be clarified when someone intended to make scientific consideration in making decision on what reading skills and strategies are needed by their students. After deciding what reading skills and strategies are important, the way how to teach them is also an important issue that should be addressed. The position of English as a foreign language in Indonesia is seen as obstacle for students and it needs special attention. As compared to reading in foreign language, there has been a wide range of literature on the comparison between reading in first and second language. It would be beneficial to discuss reading in foreign language since it will shed ideas on how to teach reading in Indonesian context. Therefore, this article will try to discuss a comprehensive definition of reading, reading skills and strategies and also discuss important point on reading in first, second and foreign language. Finally, the writer will purpose a model for teaching reading which is expected to be suitable for Indonesian students.

Abstract

Internet has become an inseparable part of the life of most university students norvadays. They can access internet through cellular phone or wireless facility around campus area. Internet is a source of potential benefit in language classroorn provided that the availability of free teaching and leaming resources that can be used in Reading class. FL readers have a more limited opportunity to develop automaticity in Reading since classroom is the only meaningful place where they are exposed to reading. Automatic process in reading is the outcome of thousands of hours of meaningful input. It is something natural that most of FL readers are struggling and consider reading is difficult and also frustrating to most of them considering the amount of time they spend reading. It will be beneficial that teachers are able to explore free online reading resources as an interesting and accessible tool to provide input and eventually help students to read with better comprehension. This article will, therefore, discuss theoretical background on using on line teaching resources, how and what on line resources are available.
