Abstract

In teaching English at school, the teacher must be able to find the best way in teaching the language skills especially Writing, so that the material given can be received well. This research used the quantitative analysis to find the effect of using pictures on student’s writing descriptive paragraph. In this thesis, the writer took 60 students as a sample of data. The populations were the second year of SMP Negeri 1 Tanah Jawa where the X-1 as the experimental group and X-2 as the control group. To collect the data, the writer applied writing test. It is an objective test. The validity of the instrument is found out by using the Coefficient ProductMoment Formula and the Formula of Spearman Brown to find out the reliability. The data were analyzed by using the t-Test. The finding indicates that pictures give an effect on student’s writing descriptive text. The research of the t-Test is 10,9. It means that the test is higher than the table (10,9>0,01). It can be said that there is an effect of pictureson student’s writing descriptive text. From the result of analysis, the writer concludes that : (1) The use of pictures give a positive effect in writing descriptive text, (2) The score of experimental group is higher than the score of control group, (3) The score of the t-observe calculation is higherthan t-table. So, the effect of using pictures on student’s writing descriptive text is accepted.Keywords : descriptive paragraph, standardized test, descriptive text

Abstract

Schools must recognize that school culture has an effect on the development of character in students. With the prevalence of numerous character flaws among students, it is expected that through school culture, students will be able to form their character through a school-based habit. Teachers at SMK Swasta Teladan in Tanah Jawa, Simalungun Regency, were the recipients of this community service. Thirty-three teachers were among those who took part in the socialization. This was a qualitative research project with a descriptive approach. The approaches used in this case are lectures and group discussions, with information being given first, followed by a question and answer session about the material. After having all methods provided, the results of the socialization through the school culture implementation possibly to be implemented to support the character education were: 1) cultivating religious tolerance values, 2) The implementation of school ceremonies, 3) implementation of working groups (PokJa) in schools, 4) The use of student-centered learning (student-oriented learning) during the learning process, 5) Using scouts in schools for students’ training to be more independent, and the last was prizes should be granted to students including all areas events, not only for academic areas. Last but not least, the role of school culture really can strengthen and support the character education for the students.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh teknik Think-Pair-Share terhadap pencapaian siswa dalam pemahaman membaca pada mahasiswa semester dua Universitas FKIP Nommensen Pematangsiantar. Penulis menggunakan desain penelitian kuantitatif dan populasi penelitian ini adalah dari mahasiswa semester dua Universitas FKIP Nommensen Pematangsiantar yang terdiri dari 270 siswa. Penulis mengambil 2 kelas atau 60 siswa adalah sampel 30 siswa dari kelompok eksperimen (C) dan 30 siswa dari kelompok kontrol (D). Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata kelompok eksperimen lebih tinggi daripada kelompok kontrol rata-rata (65,06> 29,93). Hasil pengujian hipotesis menunjukkan bahwa T_OBS lebih tinggi dari T_table (66,15> 2,00). Itu berarti bahwa H_a diterima dan H_o ditolak. Akhirnya, disimpulkan bahwa ada pengaruh yang signifikan menggunakan teknik Think-Pair-Share pada pencapaian siswa dalam pemahaman membaca pada mahasiswa semester dua FKIP Nommensen Universitas Pematangsiantar. Disarankan agar para guru menerapkan teknik Think-Pair-Share dalam pengajaran membaca pada mahasiswa semester dua FKIP Universitas Nommensen Pematangsiantar.Kata kunci: Think Pair Share Technique, Prestasi, Pemahaman Bacaan ABSTRACT The aim of the research is to find out the effect of Think-Pair-Share technique on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension at the second semester students of FKIP Nommensen University Pematangsiantar. The writer uses quantitative research design and the population of this study is from the second semester students of FKIP Nommensen University Pematangsiantar that consists of 270 students. The writer takes 2 classes or 60 students are the sample 30 students from experimental group (C) and 30 students from control group (D). The research findings show that the mean of experimental group is higher than the mean of control group (65,06>29,93). The result of the hypothesis testing showed that is T_OBS higher than T_table (66,15>2,00). It means that H_a is accepted and H_o is rejected. Finally, it is concluded that there is a significant the effect of using Think-Pair-Share technique on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension at the second semester students of FKIP Nommensen University Pematangsiantar. It is suggested that the teachers apply Think-Pair-Share technique in teaching reading comprehension at the second semester students of FKIP Nommensen University Pematangsiantar.Key words : Think

Abstract

This study aims to find out women’s language feature used by Jacinda Arden in speech about COVID-19. The researchers conducted the study with Lakoff’s theory. This research investigates the type and function of women’s language in speech about COVID-19 used by Jacinda Arden. The research formulated a question as the problem “What are the women’s language feature used by Jacinda Arden in speech about COVID-19?” to find out the women’s language feature used by Jacinda Arden in speech about COVID-19. The researchers used qualitative research design by employing content analysis to answer the research question. There were 2 research instrument used in this research, they were the researchers as the human research and observation sheet. The researchers conducted the research by using the record and video script of Jacinda Arden in her speeches about COVID-19 that delivered on March 21 and April 6, 2020. The result of this study showed not all types of women’s language feature used Jacinda Arden. The researchers found seven types of women’s language feature. Those feature are divided into lexical hedges 18,15%, rising intonation 0,89%, empty adjectives 1,19%, intensifier 16,96, hypercorrect grammar 20,83%, super polite form 1,19%, and emphatic stress 40,77%. The absent women’s language features are tag question, price color term, and avoidance of using strong swear words. The most dominant women’s language feature is emphatic stress function of emphatic stress in this speech is to emphasize the main idea or word that she wanted to focus on.

Abstract

            This research intended to find out components of transitive system used on news Jakarta post about some good Covid-19 related news. Therefore, the researcher formulated a question as the problem as follows: “What are components of transitive system used on news Jakarta post about some good Covid-19 related news?” The researcher used qualitative design because data are collected by using documents in form of word and a procedure of systematic analysis of content text (words, phrase, documents, etc.), analysis content by qualitative enable researchers to understand the text by grouping words that have same meaning into categories. The research finding showed that component of transitivity system. There are three transitive system namely participants, process, and circumstances. First, participants found namely goal, actor, sayer, senser, verbiage, value, token carrier, attribute, behaver, client, recipient, phenomenon, and receiver with calculate is 177 participants, the highest participant is actor (26.55%). The second process found material, mental, verbal, behavioral, relational with calculate is 103 processes, the highest process is material (44.67%). The third, circumstance found extent, locution, contingency, manner, matter, and role, with calculates are 80 times. The highest circumstance is extents or time (30 %).

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the types of illocutionary act in the Incredible 2 movie and to interpret the dominant types of illocutionary act. Searle’s theory are used by the researchers to answer the formulated research questions. This research is a qualitative research applying content or document analysis. The subject of this research is a movie entitled Incredible 2  movie The data were some scene including the illocutionary act in Incredible 2 movie. To collecting the data, the researchers downloading the movie from google, watching the film “Incredible 2” for several time, then searching for the script of the movie in the internet, watching the movie while reading the script, finding some sentences that are considered to have illocutionary act needed for the analysis and found the dominant types of illocutionary act, After collected the data, the researchers analyze the data based on some steps, classifying the illocutionary act, finding the dominant types of the illocutionary act, The findings of the research are as follows: in Incredible Movie, Searle’s theory there are 5 types of illocutionary act are found: From those types, in movie Incredible  found the types of illocutionary act as follows : directives consist of  8 data (32%), assertive consist of 7 data (28%), expressive consist of 7 data (28%), commisive consist of 2 data (8%) and declaration sonsist of 1 data(4%).

Abstract

As we know that nowadays self-reliance is very important for the students in shaping their character. Lots of students are not mature because of they are not independence. The aim of this research is to empower the teachers’ understanding in implementing self-reliance based character education to the students. Methods used in this community service were socialization with PowerPoint presentation. Then sharing session with questions and answers to the presentation presented. This presentation was continued to case exposure with some reality conditions and group discussion. The location of this community service was at SMK Swasta Teladan Tanah Jawa in Simalungun Regency. Thirty-three teachers were the participants conducted on 7-8 January 2020. After collecting all the data, the researcher found that there are some results of how teachers can help to implement the self-reliance based character education such as: 1) to be active learners, 2) encouraging students in asking question when teaching and learning process for every subject, 3) teachers’ method of teaching, 4) integrating scout or boys’ brigade in the school, 5) students’ discipline to school policy, and 6) students’ freedom in using the internet as media for learning. Though there were problems in implementing the self-reliance based character education such as parents’ encouragement to school policy and teachers’ ability to implement the self-reliance in the subject, the researchers hope that this socialization can enlighten and empower teachers in implementing the self-reliance to the students for the brighter future of the students themselves and also for the advances of country.

Abstract

This study was focused on the effect of using collaborative writing on students’ achievement in writing recount text. The objective of this research was to find out the significant effect of collaborative writing on students’ achievement in writing recount text at students grade ten in SMK YP 1 HKBP Pematangsiantar. Two classes was taken as the sample of this research. The class X-MP as the experimental group that taught by using collaborative writing and X-MM as the control class taught by conventional method. This research design is quantitative research were gained by assessing the students’ writing skills through the pretest and posttest. The instrument of collecting data was writing test. After collecting data, it was found the main score of pretest to post test in experimental group was 48.47 to 89,647. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that the t-test is higher than the value of t-table. (5. 68 > 1.69 (α = 0.05)) with the degree of freedom (df) = 32. Based on the data analysis of the study, the result indicates that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of using Collaborative writing on students’ achievement in writing recount text of students grade ten in SMK YP1 HKBP Pematangsiantar.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the students writing difficulties in recount text that faced by the students during online learning process. In performing data and data analysis qualitative research design was applied. It is based on basic interpretative analysis. It was used to describe topic related to the phenomenon happened in writing through online learning during pandemic covid-19. The object of this research was the students at tenth grade in SMA Swasta Teladan Pematangsiantar. In collecting data questionnaires were shared to 77 respondents. The research finding shows that the subjects have difficulties in writing recount text during online learning at situation of Covid-19 pandemic. The difficulties in four aspects of writing, they are sentence construction, organizing text, paragraphing aspect and text cohesion aspect. It is supported by the degree of percentage score of the questionnaires scores they are sentence construction aspect with Agree scale 55.2 %, organizing a text and paragraphing aspect with Agree scale 51.95 %, text cohesion aspect with Agree scale 51.95% and register/style aspect with Strongly Agree scale 47.5 %.
