Abstract

This paper argues that the lack of economic diversification caused by colonial practices serves as the cause of Nigeria’s dependency towards the oil sector, hence exacerbating their economic condition amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as colonialism with the British Empire has carried out into today’s day and age as Nigeria’s economic vulnerability and dependency on its oil industry. Despite previous experiences in facing crises due to fluctuating global oil markets, it is apparent that the sector of mining and quarrying –including oil– still holds a great proportion of Nigeria’s domestic revenue sources, despite attempts to diversify the country’s economic portfolio. It is clear that Nigeria’s lack of diversification of economic sources as a colonial legacy makes the country more vulnerable towards crisis, especially in the context of COVID-19. Nigeria’s dependency on Oil in the wake of post-colonialism offers a good example of the vulnerable nature of economies that lack diversification. Furthermore, this study uses literature findings as its main source of data. One can also see literature comparison of the concept regarding the impact of neo-colonial frameworks towards former colonies.

Abstract

Relations between the Philippines and China are filled with conflict and cooperation. The conflict between the two countries can be seen from the conflict in the South China Sea, while the cooperation between the Philippines and China can be seen in the form of investment, loans, and others. With these dynamics, the author then finds an anomaly related to why the Philippines, which is in conflict with China in the South China Sea still wants to cooperate with China during the pandemic of COVID-19. Through this research, the author aims to find out the reasons behind the Philippines' desire to cooperate. The author then argues that the cooperation happens because of the material benefits that the Philippines has received and the benefit of social relations. In doing this research, the author uses rational choice theory from a journal written by Linda K George. By using rational choice theory, the author will further review what choices the Philippines faces so that it prefers to cooperate with China.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The legalization of cannabis has been a trend to be done by countries because it is seen as beneficial in many ways. Marijuana is seen as a drug which has less negative impacts, or can be said “manageable” hence receiving much support from the society to be legalized in a country. Cannabis legalization, either medical or non medical marijuana, is believed to positively impact the welfare of society. Uruguay and Canada are the first and second countries which legalized non medical marijuana through the establishment of a specific marijuana policy to regulate various activities related to marijuana. However, the established marijuana legalization policy has not necessarily proven to give advantages to society. In addition, the impacts of the legalization itself can not only be seen from the fact that the countries have legalized marijuana, rather how the legalization is regulated in the policy. Thus, this research will analyze how marijuana is legalized in the national policy of Uruguay and Canada, and compare the impacts of the policy towards human welfare through the perspective of Social Welfare Theory by Elizabeth Wickenden.

Abstract

Abstract

Myanmar has experienced a democracy crisis and is facing a violent war for human rights by the military junta. The conflict between the military and the victory of Aung San Suu Kyi's party, namely the NLD (National League for Democracy) party, caused Myanmar to experience a coup since February 2021. The human rights urgency of the Myanmar problem caused international institutions and a number of countries such as the United States to help Myanmar in resolving the problem by both providing financial assistance and other government development assistance to Myanmar, through its agency USAID (United States Agency for International Development). The existence of USAID assistance to Myanmar indicates that there are things that encourage US assistance to Myanmar which raises questions; what are the interests of the US through USAID in helping Myanmar. Which questions will be answered in this paper with a historical approach based on the theory of liberalism. Keywords: Military Coup; liberalism; Myanmar; USAID References Aida, R. N. Abstract

This paper focuses on the implications of the Russia-Ukraine war on Germany's dependence on natural gas supplies imported from Russia, which affects the German economy. Through the theory of dependency, we will analyze whether energy-dependent relationships cause great losses when relations between countries run into problems and how Germany responds to this situation. Russia is currently trying to take control of Ukraine and has begun a military invasion. Meanwhile, Germany, which is a member of the European Union, is experiencing pressure from the European Union to sanction Russia in the form of a natural gas embargo. Losses can be experienced by Germany due to restrictions on the supply of natural gas energy from Russia which affect the productivity of its industry because the German industry is based on natural gas energy imported from Russia. This study shows that Germany is dependent on natural gas energy cooperation fromRussia. This dependence affects the economic stability of the German state and Germany's political relations with the European Union. So Germany is looking for ways to not depend on natural gas products and switch to renewable energy. Although at first, it was very difficult for Germany to decide to sanction a natural gas embargo against Russia, Germany decided that it was willing and ready to embargo Russia. This research uses qualitative methodology by means of a literature study to obtain data and information. It is interesting to discuss this topic because of the complexity between Germany towards Russia and the European Union in importing natural gas for the benefit of Germany's economic development. Abstract

Hong Kong has seen an upheaval in recent years. From the protests over the extradition law to the protests over the National Security Law, these protests are a response to the ever-encroaching hand of Beijing on political rights in Hong Kong. After the National Security Law was implemented, Hong Kong’s freedom was almost gone. One by one, pro-democracy protesters, opposition parliament members, and opposition media are being targeted and repressed. Despite the numerous protests and riots, the Hong Kong SAR government perseveres with little concession to the protesters. Why does the government of Hong Kong decided not to respect Hong Kong’s unique democratic system in China, arguably the system that has brought Hong Kong to one of the most prominent cities in the world for global interactions, and instead wish to turn it into another normal Chinese city? Why does the Hong Kong SAR government almost completely ignore the voice of the Hong Kong people? Using the framework developed by Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith in The Dictator’s Handbook, I argue that the small size of Hong Kong’s governing coalition (i.e., the minimum amount of support required for the leader to stay in power) and the ease in which the Chief Executive of Hong Kong rewards her allies play a significant role in this democratic backsliding. Furthermore, while the Western World reacted in outrage over this undemocratic encroachment of Beijing on Hong Kong, I argue that their sanctions on Hong Kong leaders will not play a significant role as the Chief Executive of Hong Kong does not need their support.  Keywords: Hong Kong; democracy; protests; governing coalition;sanctions REFERENCES   Allison, Graham. Abstract

Why do states want to acquire nuclear weapons? In other words, what drives nuclear-aspiring states? This is the basic question that the author seeks to address in this research. To do so, this research will focus on two standout cases: Iran and North Korea. By employing structural realism as a tool of analysis, the author argues that it is the structure of the international system that drives both Iran and North Korea to acquire nuclear weapons of their own. Specifically, it is the highly unequal distribution of power both regionally and globally that encourages both states to go nuclear. At the global level, both Iran and North Korea found themselves in hostilities with a much more powerful state, the United States. The hostilities and the fact that the United States is way more powerful increase the fear of being attacked in both countries. Similarly, at the regional level, both states face neighbors that are relatively more powerful and have alliances with the United States. Thus, this imbalance of power and the fear it created in both Iran and North Korea give them great incentive to go nuclear, as nuclear weapons would act as a deterrent against any possible aggression. This research is qualitative and based on the literature study data collection method. Abstract

Terrorism, like other forms of criminal activities, undergoes continual adaptation in response to societal changes and the passage of time. Recent studies have begun to explore the evolving nature of criminal activities conducted by terrorist groups that concurrently function as multinational crime syndicates, often referred to as ‘crime-terrorism.’ In this particular study applied the crime-terrorism framework by Rollins and Wyler, with a specific focus on the Abu Sayyaf Group as the subject of analysis. This paper delves into the Abu Sayyaf Group's motivation for transitioning into a crime-terrorist organization and examines the tactics employed by the group in carrying out their operations. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology aligned with the principles established by John W. Creswell, this study elucidates two significant findings: (1) the Abu Sayyaf Group's motivation for engaging in organized crime is primarily driven by the need to sustain its operations and support its members' livelihoods since the external funding sources is disrupted; and (2) the tactics practiced by the Abu Sayyaf Group include bomb attacks, kidnappings, extortion, and the provision of security for illicit activities such as the cultivation and trade of illegal cannabis. Abstract

The dispute between China and Japan over administrative control of Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands raises a question about the intention of China with its confrontative foreign policy. China's foreign policy is often difficult to understand clearly largely because of its ambiguity in determining the appropriate instruments to fight for its interests. China's foreign policy in regards to its dispute with Japan over Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands should not have been implemented because of China's membership and ratification of UNCLOS back in 1996. By using the qualitative method along with the National Attribute theory by Valerie Hudson, it was found that China's confrontative foreign policy was based of the fact that China has an advantage on the aspects of its national attribute, mainly on its natural resources, economic and military capabilities. Keywords: Diaoyu; Senkaku; Cina; Jepang; Atribut Nasional
