Abstract

The absence of East Asian regionalism has become a problem along with the increasing political tensions and the competition for military power from the member countries of the region. However, the bright spot for the creation of regionalism is not increasingly emerging and instead Japan, China and Korea choose their respective allies in the uncertainty of this international political contestation. History proves the truth today, that disputing countries will not easily cooperate in the same forum unless assisted by a third party. In this case, ASEAN is a liaison through ASEAN+3 and from Japan's perspective this situation is good. Cooperation between Japan and China, Japan and Korea and a mixture of the three often occurs bilaterally or non-bilaterally through ASEAN. Following the flow of the existing problems, a research question was formulated, "From a Japan perspective, why didn't regionalism have been created in the East Asia region even though a regionalization process had been established?" To help formulate answers in this article the author uses qualitative methods and critical security studies theory. From a Japan perspective, the absence of East Asian regionalism occurs because of the long history experienced by powerful countries in the region. Regionalism is increasingly suppressed in its development because the dynamics of the region are tenuous, tense and tend to experience fluctuations due to social, economic and military struggles, especially nuclear weapons. Keywords: Regionalism; East Asia; Japan; ASEAN+3; History Absensi regionalisme Asia Timur menjadi masalah seiring dengan meningkatnya ketegangan politik dan perlombaan adu kekuatan militer dari negara-negara anggota kawasannya.

Abstract

Barcelona is today recognized as a major fashion capital, with many notable shopping districts playing host to some of the most notable and prestigious fashion brands in the world. The city has witnessed the start and rise of some of the most influential names in the industry and is ranked in the top 5 of the most important fashion capitals on earth. This status is thanks to the success of Barcelona and Catalonia’s cotton and textile industry from the 18th - 20th centuries, which allowed for the city’s fashion scene to flourish and become what it is today. However, it is impossible to talk about this success without mentioning the impact of trade relations between Catalonia and Colonial America. In this article, I wish to elaborate on the history of Catalonia’s textile industry and the impact that trade with Colonial America had on its evolution to allow the region to industrialize at a rapid pace and sustain a burgeoning fashion industry in Barcelona. Abstract

ABSTRACT Online gambling is rising in Southeast Asian countries and poses a threat to the stability of a nation, both economically and socially, especially in Cambodia and Indonesia. Online gambling, a form of cybercrime that involves empty promises which is prevalent in Cambodia, has negatively impacted Indonesia’s economy and constructed a transnational threat to ASEAN countries. Certain factors cause the rise of this phenomenon, but the high prevalence of online gambling in Indonesia and Cambodia indirectly reflects the mechanization of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a regional institution. Even though various efforts and initiatives that ASEAN member countries have made to overcome the rise of online gambling, it can’t be denied that this transnational crime is ongoing between Indonesia and Cambodia. Therefore, this article aims to study how online gambling as a transnational crime can continue despite the presence of institutions such as ASEAN that aim to accommodate mechanisms such as regional cooperation with interdependence as an approach. Through qualitative research methods, this article shows the failure of ASEAN as an institution to achieve interdependence among its members to overcome the issue of online gambling in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia and Cambodia. Abstract

Sweden is well-known for having the highest levels of gender equality. In reality, Sweden has one of the highest reported incidences of sexual harassment in the European Union. Numerous feminist movements have arisen as a result, with the #MeToo movement and the Harvey Weinstein case being highly well-known in 2017. As one of the social movements, #MeToo aims to accomplish certain objectives. For example, it is now working to change sexual harassment laws in Sweden. This poses the question, how can a social movement such as #MeToo impact a nation's laws to the extent that those laws have impacted? In this essay, we aim to give a broad overview of a social movement that has garnered a lot of support from Swedish society. The approach is qualitative and uses the theory of liberal feminism and social movement in addition to secondary data collection. The study's findings examine a social movement that urged the government to transform the status quo by providing a safe space for women to fight for gender equality. This movement ultimately resulted in the passing of a new law that was a reform that benefited the victims. Keywords: Social Movement; #MeToo; Sexual Harassment; Policy Change; Sweden.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The escalating actions of narcoterrorist groups have triggered a security crisis in Ecuador. As the highest authority, the government has employed all possible measures to curb the influence of narcoterrorist groups and restore stability. These efforts have been carried out through extraordinary measures as a form of securitization, including military operations aimed at addressing existential threats. However, despite the implementation of such extraordinary measures, the security crisis remains unresolved and persists as a tangible reality. This situation places Ecuador in a position where the dominance of narcoterrorist groups significantly affects the country's dynamics. Based on this phenomenon, this study examines how extraordinary measures in Ecuador have influenced the state’s power dynamics and the narcoterrorist groups' control over security in 2024. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing secondary data such as literature, official websites, and reports. The analysis is grounded in securitization theory, focusing on how the state employs extraordinary measures to confront existential threats. The study aims to provide an understanding of the interaction dynamics between the government and narcoterrorist groups and how securitization is implemented to stabilize Ecuador's security conditions. The findings reveal that the government employs extraordinary measures as a tool of securitization to reclaim its authority from the influence and dominance of narcoterrorist groups. Abstract

South Korea's leading K-Pop multinational corporations—HYBE, SM, JYP, and YG—have actively pursued international growth, with Southeast Asia emerging as a pivotal market. This research investigates the strategic approaches these companies employ to penetrate the Southeast Asian market, a region characterized by substantial K-pop fandom. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, the analysis draws upon secondary data, including news reports and official corporate publications, to examine the Big Four's global market entry models through several categories, including exports, licensing, alliances or joint ventures, and FDI. The study finds that the Big Four primarily focus on exporting K-pop products to Southeast Asia, capitalizing on its large, loyal fan base. These companies prefer partnership and distribution strategies to enter the Southeast Asian market while reducing risk by avoiding long-term investment through FDI (i.e., establishing subsidiaries, acquiring local companies, or building new business operations in the region). Keywords: market entry strategy, big four agencies, Korean music industry, Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Clean energy has become one of the central issues in International Relations as the impacts of climate crisis and environmental degradation become increasingly tangible. The urgency to move away from fossil fuel-based transportation towards electric vehicles is not merely a technological choice, but also part of political dynamics involving multiple actors with competing interests. This study aims to analyze Tesla’s role in the transition to electric vehicles and clean energy in the United States using a political ecology approach, which positions multinational corporations as actors that shape environmental governance. A qualitative instrumental case study design is employed, relying on document studies of government regulations, corporate reports, and academic literature. The findings show that Tesla functions not only as an electric vehicle manufacturer, but also as a form of political pressure contributing to the strengthening of clean energy regulations during Joe Biden’s presidency following regulatory rollbacks under Donald Trump. At the same time, the study reveals critical consequences, particularly regarding the ecological footprint of battery supply chains and the risk of environmental injustice in mineral-producing countries. Political ecology thus helps to demonstrate that the clean energy transition is deeply embedded in power relations and cannot be understood as a neutral, purely technocratic process.

Abstract

Russia faced embargo sanctions from the United States, the European Union and its allies during the Russia-Ukraine War that lasted more than a year. The embargo sanctions were mainly imposed on Russia's oil and gas exports, which provide Russia with its biggest revenue and ensure its military operations in Ukraine. However, the embargo sanctions did not effectively pressure Russia economically to change its military actions in Ukraine. Instead, Russia's oil and gas exports experienced a resilience that continued to ensure its military operations in Ukraine. This article discusses the resilience and relevance of Russia’s oil and gas exports to continuation of Russia's military operations toward Ukraine in February 2022 until October 2023 period. Russia’s military operations to Ukraine has been going more than one year despite the economic embargo sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States, the Europe Union, and their allies. While facing sanctions from the “majority of the world”, Russia's energy and economy is still resilient and ensured the continuity of the military operations. This article examines the dynamics of Russia’s energy export, specifically oil and gas, which have resilience from sanctions and embargoes, also the relevance to fund the military operations. This qualitative article is a contemporary historical study that also uses energy geopolitics approaches from Yu and Dai (2012), and political economy. Sources of data for the analysis of this article were collected from news media, statistical data, and reports of Russian and European petroleum agencies, which revealed that Russia's oil and gas exports fluctuated, making Russia's continuing involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict as well as its resilience during the embargo from its political opponents.

Abstract

This study examines labor exploitation in shrimp farming supply chains in Southeast Asia. This study attempts to address this phenomenon by using human security theory to analyze global value chains. Southeast Asia has developed into one of the major shrimp producing regions and exports its shrimp to various developed countries, especially the European Union and the United States. This research uses qualitative methods through the study of secondary data, such as research reports, journal articles, and news. The findings of this research show how workers in the production stage experience economic, food, environmental, health and personal vulnerabilities and threats in Vietnam and Thailand. This is exacerbated by the GVC architecture that pressures developing countries to suppress their workers so that they can take a larger profit margin. This study finds that shrimp GVCs have created a systematic and interconnected system of multidimensional exploitation by targeting workers at the production level for corporate profits in the global market.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The transnational drug trade in the Golden Triangle region is a form of transnational crime that has envolved into a non-tradisional security threat in Southeast Asia. This phenomenon is characterized by the cross-border mobility of actors and coomplex trafficking routes, as well as the limited capacitu of states to adress it unilaterally. This condition has necesstated regional cooperation under the ASEAN framework. The research methodology employed emphasizes a qualitative approach utilizing secondary data such as literature, official websites, and reports. The analysis was conducted using international regime theory by tracing the regime formation process through three stages: agenda-setting, institutional selection, and operationalization. The analysis reveals that the dug issue has been framed as a non-traditional security threat and incorporated into ASEAN’s regional security agenda, prompting the development of the Border Cooperation Management framework as a basis for transnational crime coordination. This framework is then operationalized sectorally through the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD).
