Abstract

The aims of the study are to investigate the Language Learning Strategy (LLS) used by Senior High School students and analyze the influence of the LLS on their English achievement. The research had been done in two Senior High School in Purworejo. There were 117 participants in the study. Strategy Inventory and Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire and documentation were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis. To test the hypothesis, correlation product moment and linear regression were applied. The result of the study shows that metacognitive strategy is the most frequently used by the students. It is followed by compensation, cognitive, memory, social and effective strategy. The second finding shows that there is a positive and significant correlation between the use of LLS and English achievement as the r-value is 0.562 with the sig. 0.000. The regression test shows that LLS contributes 31.5% to the achievement while 68.5% was contributed by other factors. The implication of the study is it is important to develop teaching models which provide students the opportunity to practice the LLS during the learning process. The English teachers can also use Strategy-based Instruction for teaching LLS which is integrated into the learning tasks.

Abstract

Learning English in the classroom, especially grammar courses, is often considered a boring subject because the learning and teaching process is often done monotonously. The Smart Card Learning Model is expected to be able to provide a different atmosphere in the grammar class. At the stage of initiation, introduction, and application, it is expected that this learning model can increase students' interest and enthusiasm in learning grammar. From that point, increasing student interest and enthusiasm is expected to have implications for increasing student grades. This study aims to answer the 3 research problems: 1)What are the difficulties faced by students in Intermediate English Grammar class?, 2)What are the students perception on Smart Card?, 3)How can Smart Card help students in Grammar?. From the results of the research that has been carried out, students faced the difficulties in memorizing 16 tenses and the boredom in the class related to activities given by the lecturer. Students found Smart Cards was very fun, easy to use and increase students’ interest in learning English Grammar. The majority of students want a variety of learning media besides the media commonly used by lecturers such as power points, lectures, and group discussions.

Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental researchdesign.. This research aims find out the students’ vocabulary mastery taught by using Word Detective strategy, to find out the students’ vocabulary mastery taught without using Word Detective strategy, and to find out whether there is any significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery taught by using and taught without using Word Detective strategy. It was done at Forestry Vocational School of Pekanbaru with the sample of research was the X Meranti as experimental class that consist of 34 students and X Meranti as control class that consist of 33 student. So, total sample of this research is 67 student. This reseach used T-test and SPSS 19 version. Result shows that experimental class or the class that treated with Word Detective Strategy gives a bigger score in posttest than in control class or a class. It means that Word Detective is an effective strategy for vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Diction is word choice. In poetry, the diction is commonly used by the poet. This research aims to find a description of the characteristics and uses of diction in poetry-poem by Emily Dickinson. From this description, it will be seen how Emily Dickinson in choosing words to pour her imagination into a poem. Using qualitative methods and librarian technique, the data will be analysed by describing the words included in diction that is based on: (1) the connotation and denotation meaning, (2) the general and specific meaning, (3) the use of words from other languages, and (4) the style of language. As the sample data, use four poems by Emily Dickinson, namely: "A Bird Came Down", "Faith", "Hope Is The Hope Is Thing With Feathers" and "I'm Nobody! Who Are You ". The fourth of these poems will be analyzed based on the four types of diction. From the results of the study found three types of use of diction, i.e. connotation—denotation meaning, specific—general meaning, and the use of the style language. A third using of diction is most widely found in the poem entitled "I'm Nobody! Who Are You? ". Keywords: poetry, diction, and diction characteristics

Abstract

The ability of a person to speak English as a mean of communication both oral and written is influenced by mastering the vocabulary. Unfortunately, the vocabulary lessons are considered as old learning and it's abandoned by English teachers today. “Mini Walking Dictionary” offers the solution. This dictionary is developed from students' project-based learning and enhanced through 4 stages: the define phase, the design phase, the development phase and the disseminate phase. Thus it will create a valid and practical vocabulary media for students. Mini Walking Dictionary has been arranged based on the students' condition and characteristic aspects that all of them have been analyzed in detail. Therefore, Mini Walking Dictionary is very appropriately used to help the English teachers as a first step in overcoming the problems of students who have difficulty in learning English both oral and written. Abstract

Learning English as a foreign language is one of the mandatory subjects for junior high schools students in Indonesia. This subject is also among the subjects tested in national examination. This means that English is being taught in every high school, be it schools for normal students or schools for disabled students. Teaching English to students with hearing impairment is a challenge. This study aims to describe how English is taught for students in Dena Upakara School for the deaf in Wonosobo. It means the researcher explores what teaching methods are employed in the learning-teaching process. An observation and interviews were conducted to gather information on the question. The students involved in this study are students of the 7th grade. The result reveals that the teacher combines several methods to deliver the material. The methods employed by the teacher include the grammar-translation method, natural method, and lexical approach.

Abstract

This study aims at improving the students’ writing skills through promoting reflective journal writing. This is a classroom action research. The data were gained through observation, questionnaire, interview, written testimonies, and writing tests. The research findings reveal that reflective journal writing promotes the students to get progress in their writing skills achieved through some indicators shown in each meeting. They cover the improvement of a) the mean score of each writing component affecting the increase of the mean score of the students' writing tests, b) the scoring category from "average" to "good", c) the number of students getting writing skills improvement, and d) the students' learning gain. In addition, the class of English (Beginner) which is especially focused on writing skills has been able to raise the students' motivation. It can be seen through their active participation, excitement, and positive response during the instructional process, and their interest in writing.

Abstract

Project-based learning (PBL) is very important for the students since in this project students learn many things. They learn how to have a survey, collecting data, cooperate with friends, find the respondent, present the data and conclude all things in the project. CCU or Cross-Cultural Understanding is one of the subjects which is compulsory for English Department students. The PBL is appropriate to be applied in CCU since at the end of the semester the students have to research on Culture by having the respondents in the surroundings. This research is a classroom observation research in which semester six are the samples. The finding said that collaboration, asking questions, reflecting and, presenting are some aspect which 100% happened in the classroom while the result of students’ questionnaire said that the students enjoy the class and they can take much benefit from the class.
