Abstract

This study aims at highlightingthe EFL learners’ perspectives on Kulwap– online English course conducted through WhatsApp Group Interactions.This is an exploratory research project employing a qualitative method. The data of the study were gained through informal semi-structured interview and students’ written testimonies. The research findings show that conducting English online course through kulwap proposes advantages as well as challenges that must be consider for the future instructional process. The benefits of Kulwap include the accessibility, simplicity, convenience, and flexibility the students got during the instructional process if English course. On the other hand, the challenges faced by the students regarding the online course through Kulwap cover the problems of internet connectivity, and other technical things including the eye strain, students’ lack motivation, and limited response from the lecturer during the online instructional process.

Abstract

The low level of English mastery of learners in Indonesia, which is categorized far from the target, can be seen from the inappropriate application and implementation of English learning systems and methods that are applied in most formal educational institutions that are different from English course institutions. This research is aimed to determine the implication of the multi-system and the fluency bridge method for the enhancement of English mastery of HEC students. The object of the research is 3 students of elementary level of Hary English Course branch Manggisan Indah residential area, Wonosobo. The research has been conducted for approximately 4 months, started from April to July and October to November in 2019 with a private class system. Each class has a different elementary level namely level 1 and 5 elementary accompanied by different learning materials and methods. The result of the research stated that the application of multi-system and fluency bridge method was proven effectively to improve the understanding and the English abilities of HEC elementary students in Wonosobo. This statement is proven through the observation of HEC students before joining and after taking the course, showing a drastic difference in their ability to speak English. This is also showed in their level of interest in learning English, the speed level of understanding the given materials and the results of the post-test which states they graduated from the level that just learned.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to reveal the personality development of Jason Dixon as seen in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). The change of Dixon personality made the researcher interested in analyzing the personality dynamic. In analyzing the data, the study uses descriptive qualitative methods. The data is collected through data collection techniques from the dialogue and any related data from outside the movie. After the data are collected, the researcher then reads, classifies, identifies, and selects the data. This study relies on Psychological literature theory and psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud as the theoretical framework. Through the analysis we found out Dixon psychological changes from his id which is him respecting his senior, Bill Willoughby and it triggers his ego to do violence to people whom he thought has been involved in the billboard project that is to confront Bill Willoughby. However, as the movie goes by his personality changed because of his superego that is the letter from Bill Willoughby that shifted his moral.

Abstract

Sarcasm can be a part of one’s speaking style that it may come out unintentionally out of habit when that person is speaking. Sarcasm can change a whole serious conversation into a laugh worthy one without losing its function, to mock or insult the addressee. Sarcasm can enrich the vibes of a movie where it is put into for example in Marvel’s Movie ““Venom””. This research is conducted to analyze what types of sarcasm used in the movie as well as the utterance’s context and how the addressee respond the sarcastic utterance. The theory and approaches that the researcher used are Pragmatic, and Camp’s theory of sarcasm types. qualitative method is applied in this study. The researcher uses several techniques such as watching, reading, identifying, classifying and selecting. While for analyzing data, the researcher displaying, explaining and interpreting method. The results of the study shows that Marvel’s “Venom” movie indeed contains several sarcasm remarks. Context is a crucial thing to define an utterance as sarcasm or not, as well as to define what an utterance’s actual meaning. Addressee’s response can be a support proof for an utterance to be called as sarcastic remarks.

Abstract

Radical Islamic teachings penetrated the world of education. This was also experienced at SMAN 4 Jember. Prevention efforts involving teachers are very important, including Indonesian language teachers. Indonesian language teachers can play a role through literary learning. The research focuses on two things, namely (1) what moderate Islam is taught by K. H. Mustofa Bisri's literature through his literary works? (2) How can K. H. Mustofa Bisri's teachings on moderate Islam be integrated into teaching materials at SMA 4 Jember? The literary analysis stage begins with reading, recording, and content analysis. The validity of the research data was tested through validity and reliability tests. The validity test used is semantic validity, while the reliability test uses intrarater reliability and interrater reliability. The results of this study are as follows. There are several poems and short stories of K. H. Mustofa Bisri which specifically contain moderate Islamic education. This moderation partly rejects the extreme left, as in the short story "Kang Maksum". Others, reject the extreme right understanding as in the poem "I miss you, O Muhammad, Gus Jakfar's short story, Mbok Yem, Eid is just a day away, Gus Muslih". Moderation is conveyed by indirect and entertaining delivery techniques. Literature which is full of moderate values ​​is very relevant to be used as teaching material at SMA 4 Jember which applies the 2013 curriculum. After observation and data mining, the Indonesian language learning curriculum contains literary studies. In general, the achievement goal of learning literature is more likely to instill positive values ​​that can shape character.

Abstract

Various problems are faced by all academic sectors when studying online during the covid-19 pandemic. Teachers and students feel overloaded with learning at home and accomplishing school during the Covid-19 outbreak, specifically assessment, because the teacher can control and monitor the assessment activity through gamification-based assessment. One gamification-based assessment is Quizizz, created to facilitate online assessment, free user, and easy to apply. This study investigated the students’ perspectives on using Quizizz as students’ assessment tool regarding engagement theory. More specifically, the purposes of this study were to explore students' perspectives in Quizizz as their assessment tool regarding behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement. This study was a survey in which the data were collected through a questionnaire about engagement. The research participants were 32 students of secondary schools. The result of this study showed three types of engagement categories considered moderately high interpretation (M. 3.14). Specifically, Students endorsed positive behavioral engagement that demonstrated active participation, contribution, and persistence in using Quizziz. Then, students showed their positive emotions while using Quizziz, including emotional engagement. Also, students viewed good psychological involvement in students’ self-regulation and encouragement in achieving the goal, which indicates a very high interpretation in cognitive engagement. So, Quizizz as a gamification-based assessment could engage students in behavioral, emotional, and cognitive. Thus, it is highly recommended that teachers consider using Quizizz as a good assessment tool to keep students engaged.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of principal's leadership, work motivation and OCB on the performance of Muhammadiyah high school/vocational teachers throughout Wonosobo Regency. This research is included in field research or field research, with quantitative research methods. This thesis research took place at SMA/SMK Muhammadiyah in Wonosobo Regency. The population in this study were teachers who worked in SMA/SMK Muhammadiyah in Wonosobo Regency, totaling 134 and the sample used was 60 respondents/teachers. The data collection method used is a questionnaire method, while the analytical technique used consists of classical assumption test and regression analysis which is processed with the help of the SPSS for windows 26.00 program. This is evidenced by the t value for the effect of 3.408 which is greater than the t table value for df 58 at t 0.025, which is 2.00 with a significance level of 0.001. The effect of work motivation partially on teacher performance has also been shown to be influential and significant, as evidenced by the t count value of 2.633 (> t table = 2.00) with a significance level of 0.011. While the partial effect of OCB on teacher performance has also been shown to be influential and significant, as evidenced by the t count value of 3.596 (> t table = 2.00) with a significance level of 0.001. Together, the three variables have been shown to have an effect on teacher performance. This can be proven through the results of the F test which results in the calculated F value of 199.663 which is greater than the F table value of 2.00 with a significance level of 0.000. Based on the results of the study, in order to improve teacher performance, improvements to the principal's leadership, work motivation and OCB of teachers need to be improved first.

Abstract

This research is conducted to analyze fairy tales symbols presented in Sharon Maguire Godmothered movie (2020) and the semiotic analyzes of fairy tales’ symbols in Godmothered movie (2020). There are two problem statements that the researcher used in this research, first, what are the fairy tales symbols presented in Godmothered movie (2020)? Second, how are the fairy tales symbols revealed in Godmothered movie (2020)? The researcher used the qualitative method to examine the problem. The theory and approaches that the researcher used is Semiotic. This study also includes the procedures of collecting data and procedure of analyzing data. The results of this study, first, the fairy tales symbols shown through someone actions and dialogue, second, the meaning of the fairy tales signs can be analyzed by using triadic concept of Pierce’s semiotic theory. The types of symbols are more than one, depend on the symbol’s category type.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze Drug Abuser Personality Reflected In Bev’s Character In Howard’s Movie “Hillbilly Elegy (2020)”. There are two problem statements in this research. The first is how is the personality of Bev before using drugs in Howard's movie? and second is how the personality of Bev after using drugs in Howard's movie “Hillbilly Elegy”. The study uses descriptive qualitative method to analyzed the film entitle “Hillbilly Elegy” directed by Howard as the objective of the research. The method of collecting data includes watching and reading, identifying, classifying, and selecting. The method of analyzing the data by displaying, explaining, and interpreting. The data analyzed by using Abnormal psychology and Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysis. The results of the study shows that Hillbilly Elegy gives new hope that people with mental disability can live like other normal people after get addicted to drugs, there are two points from the result (1) Bev's psychological condition before using drugs as reflected in Howard's Hillbilly Elegy. (2) Bev's psychological condition after using drugs as reflected in Howard's Hillbilly Elegy such as generalized stress disorder anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the difficulties of class XII –IPA.1 students at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 2 Wonosobo, Central Java, in the odd semester of the 2018/2019 academic year, to convey and ask for opinions using spoken English properly and correctly. The problem of this research is focused on the contextual learning approach with the Problem Based Instruction (PBI) model to improve English speaking skill and is a classroom action research that aims to find out the increasing in speaking skill and changes in the behavior of class XII-IPA.1 MAN 2 Wonosobo Academic Year 2018 /2019. The instruments used were tests and non-tests with observation sheets for assessing attitudes or behavior. The data obtained was then processed in a quantitative descriptive and qualitative descriptive manner. The results showed that there was an increase in students' speaking skill and changes in students' behavior for a better and enthusiastic participation in learning. The mean value obtained by students in cycle I was 73.4%. At the end of the cycle II test, the mean value increased by 7.8% to 81.2%.
