Abstract

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as one of the business sector which give significant contribution to national GDP have an average of more than 55% in the period 2008 to 2012 (BSN 2013), in addition, the role of food-based MSMEs is very important in providing adequate food availability for the community. Standardization is one of the strategies to increase competitiveness, especially in the free trade era. Standardization activities in the industry is proven by obtaining SNI certificates (Indonesian National Standards). This study aims to understand how the characteristics and evaluation of the nature of innovation towards MSME decisions to adopt SNI certification in the food sector. This quantitative research uses explanatory type method with an explanatory nature with associative nature because it wants to explain the influence between the variables tested. The results on evaluating the nature of innovation can be seen from the relative profit, the average respondent answers strongly agree on what they think of SNI or its products labelled SNI. Then on the level of complexity, respondents consider changes in infrastructure and adjustments to product standards. On marketing factors, respondents market their products through online media is 45,9% while marketing through offline media is 54%, one of which dominates them is through exhibitions or bazaars (15,3%). The conclude that there was no significant influence between the evaluation of the nature of innovation, namely the level of relative profitability, level of complexity and the level of observability with adoption of SNI certification. The factors that influence significantly SNI certification was adaptive structuration, they are rate of socialization and testimonial approach. .

Abstract

Farmer institutions along with regulatory, normative, and cultural cognitive aspects have important roles in social cohesion to achieve the food security of independent palm smallholder farmer households. However, some dysfunctionalities and external challenges affect the structure of their institutions. This paper aims to find ways to change the behavior of independent palm smallholder farmers by identifying the internal and external factors of their behaviors in their institutions. The data were collected from 100 smallholders in West Kalimantan using Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results indicate that the internal factors do not influence farmers’ behavior because of lack of social influences on their relationships, exceptional characteristics of the region, and a mismatch between perceived risk sources and risk management strategies. Meanwhile, the external factors (the surrounding environment, institutional information, the extension roles, ISPO, reward, and family encouragement) show positive influences on farmers' behavior. Therefore, to optimize the behavioral changes of independent palm smallholders in their institutions, knowledge exchange is necessary through formal or informal communication networks. Also, they need to have the connections with institutional buyers and potential agro-processing entrepreneurs and the connection with appropriate formal saving schemes, and financial products in their value chains.

Abstract

This study aims to: 1) reveal the views of youth regarding agricultural issues through photovoice and 2) evaluate photovoice as a Participatory Extension Approaches (PEA) method. This study uses the photovoice method. The premise of photovoice is to empower people through documentary photography. Photovoice is a method of placing cameras in the hands of people whose voices are often silenced by the power elite. The subjects of this study were grouped into two, namely main informants and supporting informants. Data collection techniques were carried out by in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The results showed that photovoice is a method that empowers youth by increasing the ability of youth to express their views, thoughts, concerns and hopes regarding agricultural issues which are described through agricultural potential, farming problems and agricultural work. The application of the Participatory Extension Approaches method through the photovoice method is the most appropriate method in the community empowerment process, because in the process of making it aware of the problems and potentials that exist in people's lives, which not only makes the community the object of change, but also as the agent of change.

Abstract

The weak independence of farmers in managing farming is characterized by weak levels of farmer production and selling prices that are still determined by market conditions. The information sources owned by farmers are not strong enough to help farmers in analyzing problems faced by farmers ranging from land preparation, cultivation, harvesting to post-harvest. Therefore, the study aimed to look at the influence of agricultural information sources on the support of the institutional environment of farmers on the independence of farmers. This research used a quantitative approach with survey methods in Ogan Ilir Districts and Banyuasin Districts, South Sumatera Province. This study used a sample of 294 farmers who joined farmer groups. This research showed that the weak source of information used by farmers and the low support of the institutional environment results in the farmers' independence being quite weak. Farmers have not been able to build competitiveness, filter and partnership in the scope of their lives up to farmer groups. The independent model of farmers was able to explain 91% of sources of information and institutional environment support. Therefore, it was necessary to strengthen accurate, correct, in-depth information and adapt it to local site conditions.

Abstract

The rapid development of communication technology requires agricultural extension workers to be able to use social media in disseminating agricultural information. This study aims to describe the use of social media, analyze the factors associated with the level of social media utilization and analyze the management of agricultural information and its relationship with the use of social media. The study used the observation method to select respondents through the census. The level of social media utilization by respondents was measured by the frequency and duration in using Facebook, WhatsApp, Youtube and Instagram . The frequency of using social media is relatively high for Facebook and WhatsApp. The overall duration of accessing social media is relatively low. Factors that are significantly related to the utilization level of social media are the characteristics of extension workers (level of education and the availability of communication technology tools), perception of extension workers (ease of acces to information), information needs of extension workers (climate and capital) and motivation of extension workers (increasing knowledge and insight). Almost all extension workers manage information obtained from social media to be distributed to farmers.

Abstract

In the era of Industry 4.0, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is vital in agricultural extension. However, there are still variations in the use and adoption of ICTs at the farmer levels as not every region can optimize the use of ICT in agricultural extension. This study aims to identify the diversity of access to ICT by farmers, and identify farmers' perceptions of the use of ICT. This study used a survey method with quantitative descriptive data analysis, distributed to 73 sample respondents. The questionnaire was compiled using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory lens, using two aspects in analyzing technology acceptance: perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The results showed that the use of smartphones by farmers was high with access ownership above 60%. ICT is well accepted by respondents compared to conventional media. There is a significant relationship between the education level of farmers and perceived ease of use, with a correlation coefficient of .322. It can be concluded that smartphones have considerable potential to be used in agricultural extension, and there is a need of strategy to improve the ease of use of smartphones for farmers with low education level.
