Abstract

This study aims to explore students' engagement experiences in hybrid listening class. Three experiences of engagement were dig by the researcher those were behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. The qualitative research method with a narrative inquiry was used in this study. The participants were 8 students from the fifth semester of a university in Indonesia. The data were collected through interviews and student reflections. The thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The finding revealed that experiences related to behavioral engagement: noticing the lecturer’s explanation, and class participation (asking questions, learning practice) were more active in offline sessions than in online sessions. In addition, students showed their dominant engagement during offline sessions in cognitive activities like learning planning, efforts, strategies, challenges, and student achievements. Meanwhile, for emotional experience, students were enjoyed and happy with both sessions (online/offline), one of the reasons is its flexibility, especially for the listening material which allowed students to slowly grasp concepts and ensure full comprehension in both sessions. In essence, although students have an interest in hybrid learning, students still have a preference and a high tendency for offline sessions.

Abstract

This paper analyzes grammatical problems that the Economic and Business Faculty's seventh-semester students run across. By using a descriptive qualitative methodology, the study concentrates on abstract texts taken from eight articles that are part of the JUMAD journal, a well-known publication among the faculty members of economics and business. By careful analysis, typical grammatical problems seen in these abstracts are found and examined. The results illuminated a number of linguistic flaws, including misspellings, inconsistent verb tenses, repetition, ambiguity, and poor word choice. For students, these grammatical problems are major obstacles to both academic writing proficiency and effective communication. Although verb tense irregularities throw off the flow of ideas, spelling mistakes diminish the professionalism and credibility of the texts. Readers find the material hard to understand because of repetitions and unclear meanings. Furthermore, poor word selections can cause confusion and information misinterpretation. In general, knowing the linguistic difficulties students encounter in academic writing situations depends on the recognition and examination of these grammatical issues.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the speaking ability faced by SMA Islam Al-Ulum Medan eleventh-grade high school students. The qualitative descriptive methodology is used in this study to examine the difficulties students have speaking. Questionnaires and classroom observations provided the data for this research. The information gathered shows that the main speaking challenges faced by eleventh-grade pupils might be broadly classified into two categories: linguistic and non-linguistic. According to information gathered from the questionnaire and in-class observations, students' primary language difficulties when speaking are related to a deficiency in vocabulary, mispronounced words, and inadequate knowledge of grammar. Non-linguistic elements like psychological ones don't play a big part in the primary challenges that pupils face when speaking English. However, many pupils struggle to speak fluently, which is a challenging task that requires the integration of linguistic and non-linguistic. Analyzing speaking difficulties that students encounter before or after learning English is essential.

Writing is a critical language skill that students must acquire; nevertheless, the teaching and learning process for writing in the classroom does not go smoothly. As a result, the purpose of this study is to examine Wordtune's potential as a digital writing aid to enhance the written proficiency of English as a foreign language (EFL) students. To accomplish this goal, a pre-experimental research design was used with quantitative research tools. The pre- and post-tests were employed as tools for gathering data. Twenty students in grade ten at SMK-BM PAB 3 Medan Estate, majoring in MPLB and AKL, served as the sample for this study. Tests were given both before and after the intervention to gather data. The significant difference between the pre-and post-tests was analyzed statistically using SPSS with the T-test. The result indicates that the probability value for pre-test and post-test data is 0.000, the Tcount value is 26.536, and the Ttable value is 2.093. Because the value of Tcount > Ttable is 26.536 > 2.093 and the probability value (Sig.) 0.000 < 0.05. As a result, the use of Wordtune considerably enhanced students' writing skills. As this study demonstrated, Wordtune can be integrated into the learning process to help students write more successfully.
