Abstract

The ability to maintain unbiassed in football match commentary can be influenced by politeness strategies, which are a part of communication strategies. These strategies create a good relationship between the commentator and the audience, and also make the delivery of criticism or analysis more neutral and respectful. Nevertheless, there is a lack of research focusing on the effects of politeness strategies on objectivity in the sports domain, particularly in highly competitive matches or stressful situations, as previous studies examining politeness strategies have generally addressed the context of everyday communication. The reasearch aims to evaluate the effectiveness of politeness strategies in maintaining bias during commentary in football matches. This study used Brown and Levinson's Politeness Strategies theory and John C. Merrill's journalist ethical principles. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with data analysis of match commentary transcripts.  The results showed that the application of politeness strategies can maintain the objectivity of statements made during football match comments because in politeness strategies there is an attitude of respect for both parties involved in communication and does not show partiality to any party and does not put pressure on anyone without reducing the quality of the analysis delivered.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the translation techniques applied in translating taboo words in the subtitle of Peaky Blinders Season 2 Episode 6 and to evaluate the readability of the translation.  Using a qualitative method, data were collected from two primary sources: the subtitles of the episode and informants through Focus Group Discussions and questionnaires. The findings reveal that 9 types of taboo words were identified; cursing (25), epithets (17), insults and slurs (10), blasphemy (4), obscenity (3), slang (2), profanity (1), vulgarity (1), and scatology (1). Four translation techniques were applied: censorship (32), substitution (11), taboo for taboo (13), and euphemism (8). The average readability score of 2.85 indicates that the translation techniques employed positively impact subtitle readability. This study contributes to the field of translation by exploring how different translation techniques of taboo words affect subtitle readability. The study fills a gap by specifically focusing on taboo word translation using Davoodi's (2009) theory, which is distinct from the general translation technique approaches used in previous studies. The results highlight the importance of selecting appropriate techniques to ensure a comprehensive translations for the audience.

Abstract

This study investigates wolf-themed memes using Peirce’s semiotic framework to explore how meaning is constructed through verbal and non-verbal elements. The research highlights the importance of understanding these memes in the context of digital culture, where they serve as a medium for emotional expression and commentary. A qualitative content analysis revealed that qualisign and index were the most prominent semiotic elements in wolf-themed memes, emphasizing the role of visual and emotional tones in shaping meaning. The findings demonstrate how textual and visual components work together, with minimalistic choices effectively encapsulating complex themes. By applying a semiotic perspective, this research offers insights into the layered meanings behind wolf-themed memes and their cultural relevance as a form of communication. These results underscore the value of semiotics in interpreting internet memes, revealing their potential as symbolic tools for self-expression and digital interaction.

Abstract

With language attitudes as a mediating factor, this study looks at how learning motivation affects the English language proficiency of non-English major students at Panca Marga University. Data were gathered by means of structured questionnaires and examined using Smart PLS from a sample of one hundred students from the Faculty of Economics and Business chosen by accident sampling. The results show that language attitudes and English proficiency are much improved by learning motivation, defined by interest levels, learning goals, and effort. Interest levels refer to the students' genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for learning English, learning goals are the specific objectives they set for themselves in mastering the language, and effort reflects the amount of time and energy they dedicate to their studies to achieve proficiency. Moreover, good language attitudes—that is, favorable impressions, curiosity, and appreciation of English's usefulness—directly increase speaking, listening, reading, and writing ability. Especially, language attitudes show their cooperative influence on language acquisition and help to moderate the relationship between motivation and proficiency. These findings highlight the need of encouraging drive and developing good attitudes to enable good English proficiency. This study helps to create focused plans for raising language proficiency in non-English academic environments.

The unemployment rate in DKI Jakarta is still a concern; until now, many graduates from different levels of education have not found work. English fluency also become one of the requirements in looking for a job. The research aims to assess the role of English fluency possessed by job seekers by involving approximately 100 people randomly in the West Jakarta area with three sub-districts that will be used as samples, namely Cengkareng sub-district, Kalideres sub-district, and Kembangan sub-district. The sample is from high school/vocational school graduates and universities. The research uses a quantitative approach by spreading e-questionnaires and observations to job seekers. From job seekers ' perspective, the result on English fluency is that 51% are still at the beginner level, 47% are intermediate, and 2% are advanced. From a job seeker's perspective, beginner-level English skill means using basic expressions for introductions, personal details, and simple interactions and knowing everyday vocabulary and phrases, but it requires communication support. 74% need to upgrade their speaking skills to make English fluency effective for job seekers. The research examines job seekers' English fluency from their perspective.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to ascertain the relative significance of Kahoot versus YouTube as teaching media on students' plot-based narrative writing skills. Employing quantitative methodology, this research utilized quasi-experimental design featuring pre-tests and post-tests to examine the noteworthy enhancement of students' writing abilities. The population of research focused on the students of AEC Siantar. Researchers thoughtfully selecting two Soft Start classes to serve as experimental and control groups. The choice to implement purposive sampling was primarily motivated by the importance of maintaining a balanced composition and comparable average abilities within both classes. Through analysis of hypothesis testing, researchers reached a compelling conclusion: the t-test value exceeded t-table value (5.204 > 1.706). As a result,  alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted while null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Consequently, researchers confidently affirmed that the use of Kahoot and YouTube has significant effect on plot-based narrative writing skills of AEC Siantar students, with Kahoot emerging as more effective teaching media

Abstract

This study examines the perceptions and factors of junior high school students that affect their interest in learning English in rural schools in the Klaten area. English proficiency is essential for future career prospects and as a global communication, but gaps in resources and teaching methods pose challenges, especially in rural settings. Data were collected from first-graders at a junior high school in Klaten, Indonesia, through a structured questionnaire using a quantitative research design. The study investigated intrinsic factors such as motivation and confidence, as well as external factors such as the quality of teaching, facilities at the school, peer support, and access to resources. The results showed that intrinsic factors such as confidence and focus were very important, but external factors such as the perceived usefulness of English for global communication also significantly influenced student engagement. Statistical analysis highlights the benefits of formative assessment in improving learning outcomes compared to summative evaluation. These findings underscore the need for tailored teaching strategies, resource allocation, and supportive learning environments to bridge gaps and foster positive attitudes towards English language learning. This research offers valuable insights for educators and policymakers to create an inclusive and engaging English education framework that meets the diverse needs of rural students in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the factors that inspire students to complete short story projects in English writing classes. The qualitative descriptive method is a research method that combines descriptive and qualitative research. This method is used to describe phenomena, events, or conditions socially. The research activities were carried out in the odd semester English writing class of the 2024-2025 academic year, English study program, at Bina Sarana Informatika University, Jakarta. The participants involved were 35 semester III students. The data collection techniques used include: In-depth interviews, Focus groups, Observation, and Documentation. The data analysis technique consists of three steps, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The analysis results concluded that personal experiences, films, YouTube, novels, and peer experiences are the main sources for students in completing short story project assignments. Students can get the idea to write the short story from them. It means that the teacher must know the media of learning in writing class especially to give the task of short story project so that students can use the inspiration in writing. This finding explains that educators must teach a comprehensive understanding of the essence of the material to students.
