Abstract

This study was intended to find out the correlation between structure and reading comprehension achievement of the third year students of SMP Swasta Budi Insani Medan. There were 30 students out of 115 randomly selected as the sample. The data was collected by giving multiple choce test that consisting 50 items for structure test and 30 items for reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying Pearson’s Product Moment Formula. The finding shows that r was 0,738. It means that, there is the possitive effect between structure and reading comprehension. This implies the more students know about the knowledge of structure, the better understanding the students will be added the reading compreheension. These proved to be greater than the critical value of r at the level of 0,05 which is 0,361. Based on the data which have been found in this study, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between the students structure and reading comprehension achievement.

Abstract

This study deals with validity of cloze test in measuring reading comprehension. The objectives are to find out cloze test of fixed or variable deletion a valid measure of reading comprehension, and to find out to which level of reading comprehension is cloze test most valid. This was an export facto quantitative study. In this study, the writer took 40 students at SMP Swasta Bharlind School Medan, as the sample and they were divided into two grows. There are six hypotheses in this study in order to answer the research problems. Cloze test and TOEFL test were used as the instrument for collecting the data. The findings were that cloze test using fixed-ratio method significantly correlate with reading comprehension of TOEFL and also with literal and inferential comprehension items of TOEFL in measuring reading comprehension. And the cloze test using variable-ratio method significantly correlate with reading comprehension of TOEFL but doesn’t significantly correlate with both literal and inferential comprehension items of TOEFL in measuring reading comprehension. Then, cloze test using fixed-ratio method is a valid measure of reading comprehension (0,77), while cloze test using variable-ratio method is not a valid measure reading comprehension (0,69). Mean while cloze test using variable-ratio method does not significantly correlate with inferential comprehension items of TOEFL in measuring reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was carried out to describe the Conjunctions in English and Bahasa Indonesia and also suggest improving teaching grammar and speaking for which a library research was carried out to acquire the data. An available in the conclusion descriptive method was carried out to describe the findings. This research focused on the similarities and dissimilarities in the conjunctions in the two systems. The finding show that from the whole comparisson of function and position were exists this means that the application of subordinating conjunctions in speaking or writing is still in low rank.

Abstract

This study deals with student’s errors on the use of adjectives and adverbs with the suffix–ly and regarding adjectives and adverbs identical in form mainly in–ly form and in without–ly form. This survey only investigates them in the written exercises. They cover descriptive adjectives, manner adverbs, intensifying adverbs, and sentence adverbs. The objective of this study is to find out the types and the causes of errors made by student’s on the use adjective and adverbs with the suffix–ly. The sample of this study is 30 student of the third year students of SMA Negeri 13 Medan. This study uses a descriptive quantitative design. The instrument for collecting data consists of a teacher made test in the multiple choice form. The percentage of the student’s errors is dominantly occured in descriptive adjectives from 900 item occurrences, there were 423 errors which categorized into 5 sub categories on the use of adjectives and adverbs with the suffix–ly. Firstly, the use of descriptive adjective was 151 (35,70 %) errors divided into the use with the suffix–ly was 67 (15,84 %) errors and the use without the suffix–ly was 84 (19,86 %) errors. Secondly, the use of manner adverbs was 159 (35,22 %) errors divided into the use with the suffix–ly was 89 (21,04 %) errors and the use without the suffix–ly was 60 (14,18 %) errors. The other one is the use of intensifying adverbs with the suffix–ly was 64 (15,13 %) errors, another one is the use of time adverbs with the suffix–ly was 37 (8,75 %) errors, and the last one is the use sentence adverbs with the suffix–ly was 22 (5,2 %) errors. It is concluded that the errors are due to neglect of rules regarding the use of adjectives and adverbs with the suffix–ly. In short, the errors were dominantly caused by intralingual transfer on the use of adjectives and adverbs with the suffix–ly. It recomended that further in depth studies on the use of adjectives and adverbs with the suffix–ly had be done for the betterment of the teaching-learning process.

Abstract

This study deals with the student’s difficulties in using participle in sentences. The purposes of the study were to find out whether or not the students found difficulties in using participle in sentence and to find out the type of difficulties they faced. The population of the study was students. In this sampling, all the population has equal chance to be selected for the sample. The total numbers of samples was 32 students. The instrument used to collect the data was multiple choice test. This research was conducted by applying the descriptive quantitative design. The reliability of the test is counted by using KR21 formula. The formula testing result showed that the reliability of the test was 0,84, it means that the test was very good. The percentage of the student’s errors is dominantly occured in descriptive adjectives from 800 item occurrences, there were 436 errors which categorized into 5 sub categories on the use of adjectives and adverbs with the suffix–ly. The finding showed that the students found some difficulties in using participle, they were: Present Participle (22,52 %), Past Participle (63,73 %) and Perfect Participle (33,52 %). Past Participle was regarded as the most difficult type for them, especially in using it after certain verbs and in replacing relative pronoun, and then followed by Perfect Participle. And the last was Present Participle especially in using in it replacing relative pronoun and after certain verb. The percentage of each difficulty was taken by dividing the wrong answer to the total correct answer of the test.

Abstract

This study deals with the student’s ability in writing. Writing is one of the four English language skills which is taught in Indonesia starting from Senior High School. Furthermore, for the students, writing has become a necessary skill to master since it frequently determines their academic success. Therefore, every students has to learn how to write effectively. The scope of the study is limited to the effect of using flash cards in developing student’s ability to write narrative paragraphs. The purpose of this study was to find out whether students, were able to write a narrative paragraph or not. There were 26 students selected with randomly. In choosing the sample from the population, the writer uses lottery technique. The instrument for collecting data was writing test. The data were obtained by administering a self made test as the instruments for collecting the data and were considered in terms of validity and reliability. The method of collecting data plays an important role in conducting any kind of research in order that the result of the study will be valid. To collect the data, the writer used written test to the student as test instrument. Students as observed participants were tested by asking them to write narrative paragraphs based on the flash cards. The results of the writing ability test were analyzed by converting the student’s achievement into percentages. The percentage of the score was obtained based on the five criteria components of writing by using the formula below: The score were evaluated by using Jacob’s (1983) criteria in writing namely: Content, Organization, Vocabulary, Language in Use and Mechanic. After analyzing the data, it was found that 46,16 % or 12 students got the score percentage, lower than 75 %. Therefore, it can be calculated that the students were unable in developing to write narrative paragraph.

Abstract

Untuk memperoleh informasi tentang kecerdasan emosional dan interaksi sosial siswa maka dilakukan penelitian ini, dengan tujuan melakukan kategorisasi tingkat kecerdasan emosional siswa dan melakukan kategorisasi tingkat interaksi sosial siswa di dalam kelas dan sekolah. Mengetahui hubungan kecerdasan emosional dengan interaksi sosial siswa. Penelitian dilakukan di SMP Swasta W.R. Supratman 2 Medan. Pengambilan sampel siswa dilakukan dengan teknik bertingkat (strafied), masing-masing 24 orang tiap kelas dengan jenjang kelas VII, VIII, dan IX. Jumlah sampel sebanyak 24 orang dari siswa kelas VII. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan angket kecerdasan emosional dengan 30 item, dan angket baku; dan interaksi sosial diukur dengan sosiometri analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif dengan kategorisasi dengan baik, sedang, kurang, dan rendah/buruk; dan dilakukan analisa hubungan dengan hubungan Product Moment. Hasil penelitian diperoleh : (1) Tingkat Kecerdasan Emosional siswa SMP Swasta W.R. Supratman 2 Medan berdistribusi pada kategori tinggi (16,67 %) dan baik (83,33 %); (2) Interaksi Sosial siswa SMP Swasta W.R. Supratman 2 Medan Tahun Pembelajaran 2012/2013 tergolong dalam kategori tinggi (45,83 %) dan baik (54,17 %); (3) Kecerdasan Emosional siswa SMP Swasta W.R. Supratman 2 Medan berhubungan signifikan dengan interaksi sosialnya, pada taraf kepercayaan 95 % (rxy = 1,0 > r0,05 = 0,404); dan (4) Tinggi dan rendahnya kecerdasan emosional siswa sebesar 99 % (r2 = 0,99) akan mempengaruhi interaksi sosial siswa SMP Swasta W.R. Supratman 2 Medan.

Abstract

Seeing the importance of how to educate parents in the family environment, the authors conducted a study with the aim to find out if there is a relationship in the way parents educate in the family environment with children's learning achievement in school. In this study, the authors determined a sample of 35 private junior high school students YWKA Medan who live with parents and both parents are still alive, through random sampling techniques. To collect data, closed questionnaires are used, to obtain data on how parents educate and documentary studies to obtain student learning achievement. Respondents' answers are given a value by giving a value weight for option a given a value of 4, for option b is given a value of 3, and for option c is given a value of 2, and for option d is given a value of 1. To find a correlation between the way parents educate and learning achievement is used pearson product moment formula as follows: Where: x is the value of the questionnaire, and y is the student's learning achievement. To test a hypothesis with a significant level of 5% or by using a belief level of 95% used a table r (correlation table) with a sample number of 35 people. Thus the result of the calculation obtained the value r = -0.08 and the value of r in the correlation table is 0.334. This means that there is a very low correlation. Thus it can be proven that the hypothesis in this study is rejected. So the author can conclude that the way parents educate is good can not improve students' learning achievement.

Abstract

This research was conducted at SMK Negeri 2 Tanjung Pinang. Sampling is done by random sampling. The sample number was 34. Data collection is done using questionnaires of forms of people's behavior and adolescent emotional development. Data analysis is done by means of descriptive analysis techniques and product moment correlation techniques. From the results of the study obtained: Forms of parental behavior of students distributed in high categories(26.47%), high distribution (44.12%), sufficient distribution (17.65%) and distribution less (11.76%). Students' emotional development falls into the highly high category (23.53%), high-distribution (47.06%), sufficiently distributed (17.65%) and less distributed (11.76%). These forms of student parental behavior, significantly correlated with adolescent (student) emotional development at a 5% confidence level (rxy = -0.43). Large contributions made by forms of parental behavior to the emotional development of adolescents (students) by 18.5% (r2 = 0.185).

Abstract

What is expressed in this study is how much influence of the type of parental leadership on the socialization process of students. The research sample studied was a student of SMP Negeri 3 Pematang Jaya Satu Atap as many as 40 people. The method used is descriptive method. To obtain the data, the researchers used a closed questionnaire. The data obtained in its processing is adjusted to the criteria of item number 1 to 22, namely: 1.00-0.66 included in the category of authoritarian leadership types, 1.67 -2.33 is the leadership type laizer Faire, 2.34-3.00 including the democratic type. For items 23 to d 45 use 1.00–1.75 less once, 1.76 – 2.50 less, 2.51 – 3.25 good, and 3.26–4.00 including an excellent socialization process. The hypothesis that is enforced is that there is a meaningful influence between the type of parental leadership in the family to the socialization process of children (students). The analysis technique used is a quantitative data analysis technique, while to find out the correlation of X and Y, the author uses pearson correlation formula: From the results of calculations, the type of leadership of parents of students is mostly Laizer Faire. While the correlation between the two variables is positive where rcalculates the > rof thetable, namely r(h) 0.99 > r(t) 0.312. So the hypothesis is accepted that there is an influence of the type of parental leadership in the family on the socialization process of students. To see the magnitude of the influence exerted from the results of calculations obtained 98%. Thus, there is a positive and meaningful influence between parental leadership on the socialization process in students.
