Abstract

Scientific argumentation is one of the thinking ability which important to be trained in order to make students not only focus on solving quantitative problem and analyze physics phenomena in daily life. This study was aimed to determine the effect of Generate Argument Instruction model toward student argumentation skills on optical material. Quasy experiment was use as study model by using intact group comparison. The population in this study were students grade VIII of SMPN 20 Pekanbaru which consisted of seven classes. Two classes whas choossen to be experiment and control class based on normality and homogenity test. The data was analyze by using descriptive and inferential statistic techniques. The result of this study showed there was a sifnificant influence toward students argumentation skill between experiment class that using implementy Generate Argument Instructional Model and control class that using conventional learning. The argumentation skill of experimental class was higher than class control (12,7%). It can be conclude, the generate argument instructional model gave the positive effect toward student’s argumentation skills.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement of conceptual understanding of physics of class VIII students of SMP Negeri 40 Pekanbaru on the topic of light and optical through learning with cognitive conflict approaches. The type of this research is quasi experiment with population of 172 students of class VIII SMP Negeri 40 Pekanbaru consisted of 4 classes. Two classes were selected to be a research sample based on normality and homogeneity tests on repetition of sound material to obtain experimental and control classes, each of 43 people. The data collected by giving the physics’ conceptual understanding test in Bloom's taxonomy in the form of two tier multiple choice with 14 items. This instrument consists of 7 indicators of conceptual understanding, namely: interpretation, modeling, classifying, summarizing, drawing inference, comparing, and explaining. The result of the research showed that the ability of studens’ concept understanding after the application of learning with cognitive conflict approach was in the good category. The average score of the students’ understanding of the physics concept on the experimental group was higer than the average score of the control group. it can be concluded that learning with cognitive conflict approach can improve conceptual understanding of physics of class VIII SMP Negeri 40 Pekanbaru student on the topic of light and optics.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the high-level thinking stages that can be interpreted as a process of thinking precisely, directed, reasoned, and reflective in decision-making that can be trusted. This study was aimed to determine the improvement of critical thinking skills toward Guided Discovery Learning model of grade VIII students at MTs Al-Huda Pekanbaru on light material. The type of research used was experimental research. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. This analysis gave the description about influence of Guided Discovery Learning model toward student's critical thinking ability. The subjects of this study were 58 students. The data was collected based on critical thinking skill's test result which consisted of 15 essay questions for 5 indicators after Guided Discovery Learning model was applied on experiment class and conventional model on control class. Mean score of sudents' critical thinking ability on experiment class was 78.45 which was in a high category and average score of students' critical thinking skill on control class was 70.52 which was in low category. Based on the result of students' critical thinking skill, it can be concluded that there was an improvement of critical thinking ability after guided discovery learning model was applied by 11.24% compared to conventional learning model.

Abstract

Activated carbon from ketapang shell (Terminalia Catappa) has been successfully synthesized using dehydration-carbonization method. Activated carbon was conducted by immersing with sulphuric acid and followed by carbonization at 600oC for 2 hours. Pore characteristics were determined using imageprocessing methods of activated carbon micrographs based on parameters of area and caliper length. From the area approximation method obtained that the maximum pore size estimate was 5,69 μm at activator concentration 3% while the minimum was 4,88 μm at activator concentration 11% activator concentration respectively. At the other hands, caliper length approximation method obtained estimation of maximum pore size that was equal to 9,09 μm at activator concentration 3% and its minimum that was equal to 7,35 μm at activator concentration 7%. The porosity of the activated carbon from ketapang shell increased with the increase of sulfuric acid concentration and the highest value reached 24.96%.

Abstract

This study wasaimed to describe the level of student scientific consistency and representation consistency of class X SMA Negeri 8 Pekanbaru on rectilinear motion kinematisc material. The type of research was survey research. The subject of this research were 70 students. The data collection of this research used test, instrument of research used scientific consistency and representation consistency test the form of objektive matter which consist of 21 question wiht seven themes, each theme consist off three question with the same concept but presented in different representatiton. Descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data which showed the level of scientific consistency and representation consistency. The results showed that thepercentage of student at each scientific consistency level was 14.29% for consistent scientific, 20.00% for moderately consistent scientific and 65.71% for inconsistent scientific, while overall the students were at inconsistent levels for scientific consistency or that can be said they have no consistency scientific. For representation consistency, the percentage of students at each successive level was 17.14% for consistent representation, 28.57% for moderately consistent representation and 54.29% for inconsistent representation, while overall students were at moderately consistent representation level, mean that  studentshave consistency representation.

Abstract

The learning process of physics at school, the topics is sometime less relatedto the existing dailylife phenomenon. This condition causes low improvement of students' cognitive learning result. In this case, it was a necessary to apply a learning model to improve student learning result by applying phenomenon based learning model (PhenoBL). Quasi experiment in the form of nonequivalent control group design as the model of the research. The instrument to collect data used test of student cognitive at pretest and posttest, respectively. The Data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential analysis. The results of descriptive analysis show the average absorption rate of experiment class is 71.05% and control class is 63.33% which both classes are in a good category. In the paired sample t-test results stated an increasing of students cognitive learning outcomes from pretest to posttest. This can also be seen from the inferential analysis in that means there was a significant differences between experimental class and kontrol class. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of PhenoBL model can improve student learning outcomes of class XI MIPA SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru on optical material.
