Abstract

Physical training forms the foundation of sports training, with strength training being its most critical and essential component. Strength training enhances athletic performance by improving power, endurance, and physical capability. Despite its importance, the methods and parameters for optimizing strength training remain a subject of continuous study and debate among researchers and practitioners. This study addresses this gap by reviewing and analyzing current international research on the best practices for strength training. Specifically, it focuses on identifying the most effective forms of training, optimal intensities, volumes, and frequencies for achieving peak athletic performance. The methodology includes a comprehensive literature review of peer-reviewed journals, meta-analyses, and experimental studies on strength training. The research synthesizes findings to identify patterns and recommendations that can be tailored to the specific needs of Chinese athletes. The analysis reveals that strength training effectiveness depends on individual athlete characteristics, such as age, sport specialization, and training experience. Key findings suggest that high-intensity, low-volume training benefits explosive power sports, while moderate-intensity, high-volume regimens are better suited for endurance-focused disciplines. Training frequency, periodization, and recovery protocols also emerge as crucial factors influencing outcomes. Based on these findings, the study recommends that coaches and sports scientists in China adopt a personalized approach to designing strength training programs. This includes integrating evidence-based practices with Chinese athletes' unique physiological and cultural contexts to maximize training efficacy. Future research should explore long-term adaptations and sport-specific applications to refine these strategies further

Abstract

Local wisdom is deeply embedded in various regions, including Semarang City. However, many forms of this wisdom remain unpublished despite their unique characteristics and cultural significance. Research from the 2018 Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) UNESCO convention identified traditions such as the Dugderan and Warag Ngendog, offerings at Rewanda Cave Kreo in Gunung Pati sub-district, and the Bende Nangkasawit carnival. However, lesser-known traditions persist, such as Nyadran in Kyai Asy'ari Sentono village, Ngijo sub-district, where dozens of goats are ritually slaughtered. This study aims to analyze the meaning of Nyadran, examine its social construction using Peter L. Berger's theory, and explore the values represented within the tradition. The research employs a qualitative approach with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings reveal three key aspects: First, the Nyadran tradition symbolizes gratitude, spiritual reflection, and devotion to Islamic teachings. Second, the social construction of Nyadran follows Berger's stages of externalization, objectivation, and internalization, solidifying it as an annual community tradition without empirical foundations. Third, the tradition reflects significant cultural and economic values, fostering communal solidarity while supporting local economic activities. Despite its importance, Nyadran remains underrecognized. Therefore, it is recommended that stakeholders, including cultural organizations and local governments, document, preserve, and promote this tradition to ensure its sustainability and broader appreciation. By highlighting the cultural richness of Nyadran, its values can contribute to strengthening both local identity and tourism in Semarang City

Abstract

This study explores the linguistic conventions and etiquette used by philanderers—people who commit infidelity and extramarital affairs. Using a multiple case study approach, this study focuses on the language characteristics of philanderers, mainly how they use rhetorical techniques and linguistic strategies to manage various relationships and to conceal and disguise such activity. Through in-depth interviews and analyses of mobile communication, this research demonstrates varied use of language, vocabulary, deceiving tactics, and coded terminology. The study displays a common practice of employing prudent vocabulary choices, the tone used in conversation, politeness in language and communication, and reassuring techniques to manipulate emotion and persuasion. The use of code words, deceiving language, coded terminologies for meeting places and sexual activities, and selective language used inside social circles have been indicated in the results as part of the participants’ linguistic patterns. Furthermore, philanderers use various techniques in preserving and hiding relationships, such as employing intimate and seductive language, adaptive language, creative expression, emotionally appealing expressions, and respectful and polite language. By revealing the adept linguistic strategies and patterns of the philanderers,  this study contributes to a broader knowledge of how language and communication are used in dealing with deceit and trust in relationships and provides practical insights into determining linguistically deceiving expressions. This research offers a deeper understanding of how philanderers navigate their lives and manage multiple relationships by carefully and consciously selecting language and communication, which can be valuable in various professional and personal contexts. This study provides new avenues for comprehending the complex dynamics of multiple relationships and the role of linguistics and language

Abstract

In Ian McEwan's acclaimed science fiction novel Machines Like Me, most critics focus on the ethical anxieties surrounding human characters and artificial intelligence interactions. However, these studies often overlook the novel’s potential as a compelling work of BrexLit, particularly in its deep exploration of the lasting impact of Thatcherism on British social life. This includes its focus on family structures and the ethical challenges of child development, factors that contributed to the conditions leading to Brexit. The central issue explored is the generational reproduction of educational inequalities exacerbated by Thatcher’s policies. This study aims to analyze the disadvantaged position of Mark, a young boy growing up in a family facing economic hardship, fragmented social networks, and limited educational opportunities. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s three-dimensional framework of cultural capital theory—economic capital, social capital, and cultural capital—the paper examines how deficiencies in these forms of capital contribute to the reproduction of inequalities in Mark’s life. These challenges are reflected in the lives of three adult characters: Charlie, Mariam, and Miranda. The findings reveal that Mark’s psychological trauma and practical dilemmas are direct consequences of insufficient family support in terms of these three forms of capital. This highlights how Thatcher-era policies intensified educational inequalities across generations. The study underscores the need for policies that address educational disparities and strengthen family capital to mitigate the long-term effects of inequality, particularly in the post-Brexit era

Abstract

Academic advisement and student satisfaction are critical components of student success in higher educational institutions, and they help to determine graduation success rates. Across the world, universities are giving more attention to students’ overall university experience and how they can make it more favorable. However, academic advisement and student satisfaction are understudied in Jamaican and Caribbean contexts. This study hopes to bridge that gap by adding to the scarcity of literature. To achieve this, the researchers sought to ascertain students’ perceptions of academic advisement at their university, factors influencing student satisfaction, and how they can be improved. Data was obtained from 62 students from Northern Caribbean University and the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean via a Google Forms questionnaire with both open- and close-ended questions. Data was analyzed using content and thematic analyses. The findings show mixed views concerning students’ perceptions of academic advisement, with most views trending negatively due to lecturers' lack of effective communication. Significant factors that affect student satisfaction include efficient communication, quality teaching and emotionally intelligent faculty, flexible learning and payment plans, student support services, appropriate learning facilities, and opportunities for holistic development. To improve the situation, students recommend enhanced communication and responsiveness, improvement in academic advising and support and systematic issues, and enhanced student engagement and well-being. The study has implications for academic advising and student satisfaction frameworks and how technology can be leveraged to improve communication outcomes

Abstract

Utang na loob (debt of gratitude) is a cultural value deeply ingrained in Filipino society. It is not merely a part of the local vernacular but a profound moral construct that serves as one of the pillars of Filipino identity and social reality. However, this concept is often misunderstood and misused in practice, potentially leading to unhealthy social pressures for the recipient. This phenomenon has fostered a perception that utang na loob is burdensome and even considered a toxic trait in social relationships. This study aims to understand the true essence of utang na loob in a localized context and explore how Filipinos perceive and apply this value in their daily lives. A qualitative survey was conducted, employing the In Vivo Coding method to capture the intrinsic meanings embedded in the participants' statements. The collected data were then analyzed and structured into manageable insights that provided a deeper understanding of the concept. The study revealed that utang na loob goes beyond mere reciprocity and serves as a tool for strengthening social connections. However, its misuse can lead to emotional pressure on the recipient, often making them feel bound by an overwhelming social obligation. It is essential to instill in the younger generation that utang na loob should be rooted in goodwill and genuine concern for others rather than being perceived solely as a social obligation that imposes burdens

Abstract

ChatGPT – the more competent non-biological other – continues to dominate discussions across universities worldwide, with varying views posited for both its inclusion and exclusion in the academic space. Over the past year, several Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have tested and implemented policies to guide the inclusion of artificial intelligence (AI) for academic purposes. However, research and policies on ChatGPT are not advanced in the Jamaican and Caribbean contexts – a gap this study aims to fill. Consequently, this study investigated academic faculty’s knowledge, usage, and perceptions of ChatGPT, AI policies at their institutions, and the direction HEIs could take to develop appropriate guidelines. Thirteen lecturers from six institutions responded to an online questionnaire. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Findings reveal that, when the data was collected, the majority of the respondents had either basic notions or no knowledge of the characteristics of ChatGPT. Notwithstanding, the chatbot can help students with assignments and assist lecturers with lesson planning, research papers, and personal tasks. It can be a teacher’s assistant to enhance human knowledge. However, ChatGPT could lead to over-dependence and encourage intellectual laziness among students, which calls for lecturers to curtail assessments to focus on higher-order thinking skills. Furthermore, AI policies are lacking in local institutions, a problem that needs to be addressed promptly, and training and sensitization campaigns are necessary to promote ethical usage. The study has implications for AI frameworks in academic contexts
