Abstract

The debate between cessationism and continuanism regarding the translation of the phrase τὸ τέλειον (to teleion) continues to this day, through various arguments and interpretations. For this reason, this study aims to analyze the true meaning of the phrase τὸ τέλειον (to teleion) in 1 Corinthians 13:10, which is the basis of the debate between the two groups. Studies that support continuanism have so far interpreted the phrase τὸ τέλειον (to teleion) as a reference to the personality of Jesus, thus making the researcher consider it necessary to comprehensively study to find the true meaning of the phrase τὸ τέλειον (to teleion), using interpretative qualitative methods through the process of exegesis to understand the text in question. This article finds the meaning of the phrase τὸ τέλειον (to teleion) in 1 Corinthians 13:10 does not refer to the personality of Jesus but to the Bible as the Word/Word of God which functions as a medium in shaping spiritual maturity. Thus, the study of the phrase τὸ τέλειον (to teleion) has proven an antithetical interpretation of Jesus' personality according to the view of continuanism.

Abstract

Diversity in Indonesia, apart from being unique for this country, can also give rise to conflicts that can end in war, one of the triggers is religious differences. In Bali, conflicts due to religious differences are not visible but can be felt through people's stereotyped attitudes and discrimination. Having a selective attitude towards friends since childhood is the beginning of bullying which not only hurts mental health, it can even lead to physical harm. This research aims to re-examine using qualitative research methods with library research techniques. The results of this research show that religious moderation in a pluralistic society in Bali can be implemented with the missiological role of Christian Religious Education to promote Christian values as an opportunity. PAK missiology is realized by creating a harmonious and tolerant community environment with the local cultural wisdom that exists in Balinese society.

Abstract

This study discusses the pattern of living as a child of light as revealed in Ephesians 5:7-11. This study is important, because today's phenomenon shows that many Christians do not live in self-control, and results in many Christians who have an unholy lifestyle. This unholy lifestyle will ultimately have a bad impact on the life of Christianity in general. This study uses qualitative methods with the approach of literature and textual-contextual interpretation. The results show that the pattern of living as a child of light in Ephesians 5:7-11, provides a picture of the values and morals of life that must be applied in the lives of believers today. Understanding the position of self as light in God encourages Christians not to do dark acts, because the light must produce goodness, justice and truth. Thus, the pattern of Christian life as children of light not only has an impact on the value of ethical life, but makes that life an example for the lives of others through the fruits of life produced by every Christian/believer.

Abstract

Expressions of revenge or curses against enemies in psalms are often called imprecatory psalms. In investigating psalm texts containing curses, experts usually relate them to the Ancient Near East (ANE) cultural background and several texts in the Old Testament as the basis or reference. This research will explore the relationship between imprecise Psalms and the tradition of curses in ANE culture and the practice of curses in the Old Testament outside the Psalms. So, it will provide a comprehensive contribution to evaluating imprecise psalms in the context of the ANE and Old Testament. Are the curses in the three contexts the same or have significant differences? The author attempts to review and evaluate curses in these three contexts through descriptive studies, literature reviews, contextual analysis, and comparative studies. While there are influences and similarities in the use of curses between Psalms and ANE cultures and the Old Testament, it cannot be avoided that there are also differences that need to be considered to understand the context and purpose of the use of curses in the psalms. Interpreters must highlight the differences in genre, meaning, and essence between curses in the context of the ANE and the Old Testament and the imprecatory psalms. However, considering this background in interpretation will broaden the understanding and insight into the imprecatory in the context of modern Christianity.

Abstract

This article explores the use of the paradigmatic figure Job in James 5:11, focusing on themes of solidarity and hope in the context of suffering. This study adopts a hermeneutic approach to understand how James describes Job as a model of solidarity and hope in the midst of suffering. Analysis of the text of James 5:11 was carried out to capture the linguistic and theological nuances underlying the choice of Job as a symbol of hope. This article also examines the historical and social context of the recipients of James' letter, highlighting how Job's message of perseverance was relevant to their situations. Furthermore, this research is also directed at the spiritual and psychological manifestation of solidarity and hope in Suffering, referring to the story of Job as a reflection of the universal human experience in facing difficulties. Through this, this study provides a deeper understanding of how the figure of Job is used paradigmatically in the Letter of James to inspire and give strength to the early Christian community in the face of suffering. The results show that James not only uses Job as an example of hope, but also as a means to build solidarity among believers in the face of trials. This article provides new insights into how biblical texts can be used to support solidarity and hope amidst adversity. Keywords: Paradigmatic, Job, Solidarity, Hope, Suffering

Abstract

The Book of Job is a book rich with theological reflections on suffering. This is demonstrated in almost every chapter of the book. The richness and depth of its theology compelled the author to conduct this biblical research. According to this study aims this study is to discover the biblical theology of hope in the midst of suffering according to Job 19:23-27. The method used in this study is the thematic method to bring out the minor themes in this text. In addition, the author also use several other analyses such as context analysis, historical analysis, translation analysis, and theological analysis. In this research, the author also investigates various kinds of literature as support. Through this research it was found that there were at least two hopes held by Job when he was in the midst of suffering, namely: First, Job put his hope in God who is his redeemer. Secondly, by focusing on God, Job was able to acknowledge his belief that God would eventually be on his side.

Abstract

This study raises biblical and psychological aspects to show that the praescriptio of the Letter of 3 John in verses 1-2 is the foundation for concern for the mental health of God's servants. This is because discussions about the mental health of pastors as servants of God often do not receive adequate attention both in the academic realm and in the church itself, even though the facts show the vulnerability of God's servants to this issue. This study uses a word study and literature review approach as the main methods to explore the concept of mental health in the context of God's servants. The results show that the letter of 3 John, especially in verses 1-2, emphasizes the importance of mental health as a crucial foundation for the spirituality and hospitality of God's servants; as expressed in verses 3-4, which show the behavior of truth in everyday life and are reflected in verses 5-8, where the practice of hospitality is praised as part of the testimony of faith.

Abstract

The pedagogical element is powerful in the Book of Proverbs as the primary teaching material for wisdom seekers. Interestingly, in Proverbs 6:16-19, a unique pedagogical element emerges because it is organized based on the anatomy of the human body, eyes, tongue, hands, heart, and feet. It closes with a complete picture of the human being, a false witness. Some previous studies have only focused on discussing it in terms of the structure of Proverbs 6 in the opening (prologue) of Proverbs 1-9 without examining its pedagogical elements. For this reason, this study aims to explore the pedagogical principles in Proverbs 6:16-19 as an essential lesson for a life pleasing to God and very unique because of the peculiarities of human anatomy. Based on the Hermeneutic Analysis of Wisdom Literature Sub Genre, this study found several things, namely: First, Synthetic parallelism in verse 16 emphasizes the understanding of God's hatred and disgust for sin; Second, Seven pedagogical principles of Proverbs numerical anatomy, namely: humility, honesty, mercy, purity, deliberation, honesty, and unity. The results of this study serve as a warning for believers to practice the principles of pedagogy as moral and ethical values.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the increasing conflict between religious communities. Therefore, moderate religious perspectives, attitudes, and practices are needed to prevent conflict between religious communities. In its implementation, a hospitality attitude is needed. This is descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques through literature study and text mining using exegesis. This research aims to provide insight into moderate Christian hospitality regarding superior attitudes in congregations and radicalism experienced by Roma congregations, which can be implemented to realize religious moderation in Indonesian society to maintain a harmonious and constructive life without discrimination. Based on a theological study of Romans 12: 17-21, Christians are called to live out Christian hospitality to create good relationships without discriminating against the background. Moderate Christianity can be realized through Christian hospitality by not returning evil for evil but returning evil for good. Christians are called to bring about peace with all people based on love. Therefore, Christians must practice hospitality in their lives in building and practicing a moderate life in religion, especially in the multi-religious context of Indonesia. This research can be developed in the form of a participatory study to see to what extent Christians' understanding of hospitality is embodied in realizing a moderate life in a multireligious society.

Abstract

Romans 1:16–17 is often considered the thesis statement of Paul’s letter to the Romans. Most commentators tend to read later developments in Paul’s argument back into these two compact verses, whether to support the view that these verses articulate Paul’s doctrine of justification in a nutshell or the view that these verses foreshadow Paul’s “Christocentric” presentation of faith(fulness) in Rom 3:21–26. This article, however, seeks to interpret Rom 1:16–17 by focusing on the logical structure of 1:15–17, including Paul’s triple use of the conjunction γάρ. On this basis it is argued that Paul is eager to preach the gospel to those who have already believed in it because the gospel is God’s power for final (not initial) salvation. The gospel has ongoing power in the lives of believers because it sustains their faith by revealing God’s true, righteous character. Paul’s citation of Hab 2:4 is discussed within the flow of Paul’s argument and then the article concludes with some practical conclusions about how Christians can recapture the gospel’s power for their daily lives.
