Abstract

This study investigates how ideological legitimacy and claims of innocence are discursively constructed in Tom Lembong’s handwritten pledoi as reported by Tirto.id within the context of his corruption case. While previous Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) research on corruption has primarily examined media framing and political elites, limited attention has been given to technocratic actors and to defense statements as autonomous sites of ideological production. Addressing this gap, the study employs a qualitative research design with a descriptive–interpretive orientation, utilizing Teun A. van Dijk’s CDA framework to analyze the discourse at macrostructural, superstructural, and microstructural levels. The data consists of a single online news article reproducing the pledoi during the pre-trial phase. The findings indicate that the global meaning of the text is structured around themes of gratitude, cooperation with legal authorities, institutional trust, nationalism, and religious devotion, which collectively construct an ideology of moral–patriotic integrity. At the superstructural level, the discourse follows a coherent narrative sequence that moves from respectful address and gratitude to moral self-positioning, institutional alignment, national commitment, and religious closure, guiding readers toward an interpretation centered on humility and ethical credibility. At the microstructural level, positive lexicalization, inclusive pronouns, high-commitment modality, presuppositions of innocence, repetition, politeness markers, and the absence of legal jargon contribute to a non-adversarial and morally persuasive discourse. Overall, the pledoi functions as an ideological substitute for legal defense, foregrounding moral, national, and religious values to negotiate legitimacy under conditions of legal and institutional asymmetry. This study contributes to CDA by foregrounding defense discourse as a site of ideological construction and by extending corruption discourse analysis to technocratic actors within Indonesian digital journalism.

Abstract

The Battle of Dūlāb was a conflict between the Khawārij al-Azāriqah group and the Umayyad Dynasty government, triggered by the Khawārij’s rejection of the Umayyad political and religious authority. This study aims to analyze the elements of balāghah contained in the correspondence between al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf al-Thaqafī and his adversary Qaṭarī ibn al-Fujā’ah, during this event. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Primary data consist of the letters exchanged between al-Ḥajjāj and Qaṭarī as found in classical sources, while secondary data are obtained from various literary works, historical documents, and relevant classical texts. The findings reveal three main results. First, from the perspective of ʿilm al-bayān, the study identifies 3 instances of tashbīh, 2 instances of majāz istiʿārah, and 2 instances of Kināyah. Second, from the perspective of ʿilm al-maʿānī, the analysis reveals 3 instances of kalām khabarī, 3 instances of kalām inshāʾī, 1 instance of qaṣr, 2 instances of iṭnāb, and 1 instance of Ījāz. Third, from the perspective of ʿilm al-badīʿ, the study identifies muḥassināt lafẓiyyah in the form of 5 instances of sajʿ, 3 instances of jinās, and 1 instance of iqtibās. In addition, muḥassināt maʿnawiyyah is represented 1 instance of ṭibāq.

Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic landscape of the culinary business in Palopo Town, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, addressing the limited research on smaller urban contexts with distinct local languages and commercial dynamics. The research aims to identify the most frequently used languages in culinary signboards and to explore the motivations behind these linguistic choices. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through field observation in October 2025, resulting in 20 photographed culinary signboards. The analysis used the interactive model, involving data reduction, categorization based on language composition and communicative function, and sociolinguistic interpretation. The findings reveal four categories: monolingual English (40%), monolingual Indonesian or local languages (30%), bilingual (15%), and multilingual (5%). English is predominantly associated with modernity and global identity, while Indonesian and local languages signal cultural closeness and authenticity. Most business names are non-clausal nominal phrases, emphasizing brevity and branding efficiency. The results demonstrate that language choice in Palopo’s culinary signage functions not only as identification but also as a strategic tool for identity representation, market positioning, and negotiation between global and local values in public space.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of integrating literature, specifically short stories, into English language instruction for junior high school students. Conducted at SMPIT AN-NIDA' Lubuklinggau, it aims to determine if short stories enhance vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and overall language proficiency compared to traditional methods. The research addresses the need for engaging, culturally relevant teaching strategies in Indonesian Islamic schools. A quasi-experimental design was employed with a population of 60 students divided into two classes (30 students each). Class A (experimental group) received English instruction incorporating short stories (e.g., adapted narratives with themes of morality and adventure), while Class B (control group) followed conventional grammar-focused lessons. Pre- and post-tests measured English proficiency (vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar scores out of 100). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (means) and an independent samples t-test to assess differences between groups (α = 0.05). Pre-test means showed similar baseline proficiency: Class A (M = 65.2, SD = 8.1) and Class B (M = 66.8, SD = 7.9). Post-test means indicated improvement in both groups, but Class A outperformed Class B: Class A (M = 78.5, SD = 6.5) vs. Class B (M = 71.2, SD = 7.2). The independent t-test revealed a significant difference (t (58) = 4.23, p = 0.001), confirming that the use of short stories has a real positive impact on improving students’ English language skills.

Abstract

This study employs a corpus stylistics approach to examine the themes of cultural appropriation and migration in Okey Ndibe’s Foreign Gods, Inc. Using Wmatrix software, the study explored semantic domains to reveal the novel’s thematic and stylistic features. The study identified two dominant themes: religious and cultural commodification in a globalised world, and economic disparities and post-colonial power dynamics. These themes point to the tension between traditional religious values and the commercialisation of cultural heritage. The analysis also highlighted the economic motivations behind migration and the power imbalances in the global art market. The study contributes to the growing field of corpus stylistics in African literature. It concludes that Ndibe’s novel offers a critique of how globalisation and capitalism transform sacred cultural heritage into commodities, raising questions about cultural identity preservation in a post-colonial context.

Abstract

Proverbs, as key forms of Akan oral literature, are not merely wise sayings but cultural texts that use literary-discursive strategies such as metaphor, imagery, symbolism, simile, hyperbole, and mystification to encode gender ideologies. This study examined how women are portrayed in selected Akan proverbs through a feminist literary-discourse approach. Using purposive sampling, data were collected from published Akan proverb collections and oral accounts of two Akan elders. The proverbs were grouped thematically into four categories: women as dependents, as dangerous figures, as custodians of lineage, and as ambivalent beings. The findings show that Akan proverbs present women in paradoxical ways — at once central to lineage and family, yet also portrayed as dependent, dangerous, or subordinate. From a literary perspective, the study shows how figurative language functions as a discursive strategy that both conceals and reinforces power relations. However, feminist reinterpretation of these metaphors and symbols opens possibilities for reclaiming proverbs as tools of empowerment rather than subjugation. The study concludes that Akan proverbs are a contested site where cultural memory, literary artistry, and gender ideologies meet. It recommends that educators, scholars, and cultural custodians preserve proverbs and encourage reinterpretations that affirm the dignity and agency of women.

Abstract

This study investigates how language-in-education policy in Bangladesh contributes to disparities between English-version and Bangla-version secondary schools, particularly in access to English resources, institutional support, and curriculum equity. Although Bangla is the national language, English continues to function as a key determinant of academic and socio-economic mobility. Using a quantitative survey of 60 Grade 9–10 students in Barishal, the study compares perceptions of English learning across the two school streams. Results show that English-version students reported 93.3% access to English materials compared to 30% among Bangla-version students and unequal curriculum opportunities (26.7%). Despite these differences, both groups strongly recognized the importance of English for future careers, with agreement rates of 96.7% among Bangla-version students and 100% among English-version students. The findings illustrate how current policy structures reinforce linguistic and socio-economic inequalities, privileging English-version learners while constraining opportunities for Bangla-version students. The study emphasizes the need for equitable curriculum reform, enhanced teacher training, and redistribution of English learning resources to promote fairness and balanced educational outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates the usage of adjectives as post-modifiers in administrative names in Ghana. In English grammar, adjectives typically function as pre-modifiers. Drawing on Braj Kachru’s Concentric Circle of English and the framework of World Englishes, the study employs a mixed-method analysis of 276 constituencies and 261 districts in Ghana. The data reveals that 108 constituencies and 118 districts utilise post-modifier adjectives. The study finds that this naming convention is a direct inheritance from British colonial administrative practices. Historical evidence shows that post-modification in administrative nomenclature dates back to Old English, Celtic, and Norman French influences and is preserved in modern British parliamentary divisions to maintain the primacy of the central place name. This pattern is also observed in other Inner Circle (Canada) and Outer Circle (Nigeria, India, Singapore) varieties. The study concludes that the usage of post-modifier adjectives in Ghanaian administrative names is not a grammatical error or a localised nativisation, but a systemic feature of a globalised administrative English register.

Abstract

This analysis examines tagging, conditionality, and declaratives in the Adamic accounts in relation to how these are discursive practices through which power and obedience are discursively enacted. By discursive analysis, this analysis demonstrates how biblical texts use conditionals in the formulation of obedience, tagging in the delimitation of meanings, and declaratives in the ideologically naturalized formulation of authority. Moving beyond analysis within biblical studies, this analysis proposes a sociolinguistic argument about linguistically attested patterns that are seen here as the expression of universal mechanisms through which language articulates ideology, through which it performatively instantiates hierarchy, through which language constellations work in conformity with constitutive ideas about language, power, and ideology, as related in contemporary debates in linguistics, semiotics, sociology, and critical theory.

Abstract

This study examines lexical formation and semantic meaning in the use of slang within Instagram comment discourse. The data consist of 89 slang items collected from comments on ten highly engaged posts from Justin Bieber’s verified Instagram account. Using a qualitative approach supported by simple frequency analysis, the study investigates how slang expressions are linguistically formed and how meaning is constructed in online interaction. The findings reveal that acronyms and initialisms are the most prominent word-formation processes, reflecting a preference for brevity and efficiency in digital communication. Other processes, including conversion, clipping, blending, and word creation, demonstrate the creative adaptation of language in online discourse. Semantic analysis indicates that, although conceptual meaning is dominant, connotative, affective, social, and collocative meanings also play vital roles in expressing evaluation, emotion, and interpersonal stance. Overall, the findings suggest that slang in Instagram comments functions not only as a mechanism of linguistic economy but also as a resource for informal expression and interaction in digitally mediated communication. By linking lexical formation patterns with semantic functions, this study contributes to the understanding of slang use in contemporary social media discourse.
