Abstract

The society around the forest generally depends on the forest to extract their daily needs by taking the result of forest like timber and non-timber products for sale. However, since 2006 the illegal logging activity has been curbed and gave an impact to the communities livelihoods around the forest which caused the decline in their income. The objective of the research is to find out the alternative livelihoods after the controlling of the illegal logging, to determine the size of the income of the people before and after the controlling of illegal logging is executed, and to see the factors that is expectedly has an influence on the people's income. This research was conducted using a descriptive survey method with interview techniques. The result of the research showed that the occupations of the people before the controlling of illegal logging are tree feller/penebang, rafting agen/pengengkut, and log collector agent/pengepul. After the controlling, their changes their occupation as rice farmers, rubber farmers, fisherman, traders and rattan collectors. The peoples income before the controlling of illegal logging are; as much as 7 respondents have the lowest-income, that is less then Rp. 11.912.661, as much as 51 respondents have middle-income between Rp. 11.912.661-Rp. 21.284.645, and as much as 2 respondents have the higher-income, that is more than Rp. 21.284.645. Abstract

Borneo orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) was the only great apes that lives in Asia, one of in Indonesia. The Kepari village was one of distribution of orangutans in West Borneo, but the number of wild populations always decreased, based on the red list issued by IUCN in 2015, orangutan defined as animals that have endangered status, in addition to the orangutan was also listed in Appendix I CITES which means both animals and all products derived therefrom should not be traded anywhere. Success or failure of conservation undertaken by the government can’t be separated from the attitude of the community. This study aims to determine how public attitudes toward hunting and trade of orangutans and analyze the relationship between attitudes towards hunting and trade of orangutans with the level of perception, knowledge, and cosmopolitan. The results showed that people tend neutral attitude towards hunting and trade of orangutans, and the results of the analysis showed that the level of perception, knowledge, and cosmopolitan associated with public attitudes toward hunting and trade of orangutans. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the increments of the diameter and height of the annual average of Red Meranti trees at different age intervals through the use of silvicultural Selective Cutting and Line Planting (TPTJ) carried out in the logged area of PT . Suka Jaya Makmur in Ketapang Regency of West Kalimantan. The research method applied was a single- plot method that is a method with a sampling plot representing every logged age by measuring the plants diameters and heights in the lane of the logged area of TPTJ line, and the sampling applied was purporsive sampling. The increments of the average diameter growth of Shorea johorensis species in planting forests were smaller than Shorea leprosula and Shorea Shorea parvifolia. Whereas there was no decline or incline in the diameter of that species in the natural forest that was staying in the same value at 0.59 cm/year. The average increments of the diameters of Shorea leprosula, Shorea johorensis, and Shorea parvifolia were 2.23 cm/year, 1.79 cm/year and 1.81 m/year respectively. Moreover, the height average increments of Shorea leprosula in the planting forest was 2,39 m/year and 0,53/year in the natural forest. The average increase in height of Shorea johorensis in planting forest was 1,93 m/year and 0,50 m/year in the natural forest, while for Shorea parvifolia species, there was an average increment of height of 1,92 m/year in planting forest and 0,58 m/year in the natural forest. Keywords: S. johorensis, S. leprosula, S. parvifolia, diameter increment and height increment

Abstract

The existence of indigenous forest is very important as it constitutes a source of the see-producing area and can be also user as a research site. Unfortunately, the information about types of vegetation in the area of Bukit Tunggal forests is relatively scarce. This research aims to describe the vegetation diversity in Bukit Tunggal forests and to identify types of vegetation which are the most dominant in the area. This research was conducted for 4 week in the indigenous forest of Bukit Tunggal at Batu Nanta Village, Belimbing sub-district, Melawi. A survey method was employed in this research through a vegetation analysis with a line of terrace. The research was carried out by creating 3 lanes with the length and distance of each lanes varied depending on the condition of the field. Results of the discussion showed that there were 77 types of vegetation which could be grouped into 37 families ranging from a seedling stage (including lower plants, shrubs, bushes, and lianas), stapling, poles, to trunks. The vegetation diversity in Bukit Tunggal forests indicated that the area had a high diversity with a good conservation value. In addition, the forests has various germplasms. Results of a quantitative analysis of crucial value index (INP) at every growth level in general was dominated by meranti (Shorea spp.) of Dipterocarpaceae family. There needs, therefore, efforts to preserve the existence of this area in addition to the current conservation which has been planned and executed well, for example by enriching types and rehabilitation. Keywords: Indigenous forests of Bukit Tunggal, diversity, crucial value index, and type domination.

Abstract

Orangutans classified in order of primates and including large mammal are arboreal wildlife. Based on CITES the species categorized in Appendix I, while based on IUCN into Endangered category and be fully protected by Indonesian law whose existence is more extinct. Belantikan Hulu forest area as a potential area for animals living, one of which is the orangutan but on the other also involves the use of the area by IUPHHK-HA PT. Karda Traders. The purpose of this research was to know the characteristics and density of orangutan nests, using a transect method with record the discovery orangutan nests along the 1 km. Characteristics nest obtained an average yield orangutan nests diameter is 43.38 to 68.74 cm, diameter trees used as nests about 21.23 to 50.40 cm, height from 8.25 to 17.38 m and a height nest tree used as a nest 10 to 19.75 m. Determinant coefficient values (KP) from regression analysis indicate found nest tree height has a significant relationship to high nest with a range of high nest, Determinant coefficient values (KP) from regression analysis indicate found nest tree height has a significant relationship to high nest with a range from high nest while the results from Mann-Whitney statistic test > 0,005 is not significantly different at the two locations. The position of nest most common positions 1 and 2, the nest class is found that the class C. Aglaia and Syzygium are two genera (genus) are most used as a nest tree C. Density of nest in ex logging area 2012 with a total 2954,14 nests/4km2, while ex logging area 2009 is 2023,38 nest/4km2, the value from nest density is influenced by the availability of feed orangutans and variations in diameter and height of trees in the area.
