Abstract

Putri, Firsty Azirila. Registration Number: 2153121012. Developing Interactive Writing Worksheet to Promote Higher Order Thinking Skill for Eight Grade Student at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Medan. English Education Program, Universitas Negeri Medan, 2020. The aimed of this study was to develop students’ interactive writing worksheet descriptive text to promote higher order thinking skill. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) through six stages: gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was grade VIII at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Medan. The instruments of the data collection were gathered by interview the teacher and giving the questionnaire. The study conducted interview to English teacher and giving the questionnaire to 35 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students’ need English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about interactive writing worksheet descriptive text. The product had been validated by the experts namely English teacher and English lecturer. The product result was Interactive Writing Worksheet which had been modified to promote Higher Order Thinking Skill. The result of the experts’ validation showed that the media was appropriate to be used on the interactive writing worksheet by getting the average score is 4.5 categorized excellent.

AN ANALYSIS OF HIGH ORDER THINKING SKILL (HOTS) IN ENGLISH QUESTIONS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL EXAMINATION 2018/2019 *Ade Dama Yanti **Rika, S.Pd., M.Hum. **Tiarnita Maria Sarjani Br. Siregar, S.Pd., M.Hum. ABSTRACT Ade Dama Yanti. 2161121001. An Analysis of High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) in English Questions of Junior High School National Examination 2018/2019. A Thesis. English Education Program. State University of Medan, 2020. This study aimed to find out the level of thinking skills and to describe out the thinking skills distributed in English National Examination for Junior High School academic year 2018/2019 based on HOTS of Revised Taxonomy Bloom (2001). There are three level thinking skills in HOTS, the first is anyze skill which has the subskills of differentiating, organizing, and attributing. The second is evalute skill which has the subskills of checking and critiquing. The third is create skill which has the subskills of generating, planning, and producing. In solving the problems, this study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained through documentation. There were four packages of the English National Examination which consisted of 50 questions in every package. The total of the questions were 200 questions. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the techniques of observation and the documentary analysis. The findings showed that the four packages applied analyze skill and evaluate skill of HOTS which were 18,5% of analyze skill and 4% of evaluate skill out of 200 questions. While for the distribution of the subskills, for the analyze skill had all the subskills except the differetiating skill and for the evaluate skill had all the subskills in the questions of the four packages. Abstract

TEACHERS’ ELICTATION TECHNIQUES IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM INTERACTION AT SMK NEGERI 13 MEDAN *Khairiana Fitri **Neni Afrida Sari Harahap **Johannes Jefria Gultom Abstract This research was dealt with elicitation techniques used by the teacher in English Classroom Interaction. The objectives of this study were (1) to identify the subcategory of elicitation techniques used by the teacher in English classroom interaction at SMKN 13 Medan (2) to find out the reasons which affect the use of elicitation techniques in English classroom interaction at SMKN 13 Medan. A descriptive qualitative design was used in this study. The data were collected by recording the utterances of teacher. The data were analyzed by data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing/verification. (1) There were 259 elicitations used by the teacher in the classroom interaction. The subcategories that have been found in teacher utterances are elicitation for information, elicitation for confirmation, elicitation for agreement, elicitation for commitment, elicitation for repetition, and elicitation for clarification. (2) For the reasons which affect the use of elicitation techniques. There were six reasons, they were lack of skill and knowledge of teacher, lack confidence of students in class participation, passive recipient of information, reluctant students, large class size, and low level of learners. Meanwhile, the short duration of class and late arrival of students in class were not the reasons which affect the use of elicitation techniques. Teacher’s Teaching Strategies In Teaching Listening Comprehension At SMK Bina Bersaudara Medan. English Educational Program, Universitas Negeri Medan, 2020 This study aims to find out the teaching strategies implemented by teacher in teaching listening comprehension at SMK Bina Bersaudara Medan. The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative research through two phases: observing and interviewing. It was conducted in SMK Bina Bersaudara Medan at the XI grade class. The instruments of the research were: field notes and interview transcripts. The results of this research were first, there were only two strategies that applied by the teacher in teaching listening comprehension those are Metacognitive Strategies and Cognitive Strategies. The second was the underlying factor of using those kinds of strategies in teaching listening comprehension namely the effectiveness of teachers in teaching, basically a teacher should be a good communicator, should teach the students effectively and many more which makes a teacher become professional and the most important part is the instruction strategies which she chooses to deliver the materials which helps students in learning more effective. Abstract

DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS OF PROCEDURE TEXT BASED ON SCHEME BASE APPROACH IN SMK SWASTA ERIA MEDAN *Dayanur ** Sumarsih ABSTRACT Dayanur. Registration Number: 2132121007. Developing English Reading Materials of Procedure Text based on Sheme base Approach in SMK Swasta Eria. A thesis. English Education Study Program, Medan State University, 2021. This study aimed to develop English reading material for students based on scheme base approach in vocational school. The study conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The respondent of this research was 31 students of Office Administration grade XI in SMKS ERIA Medan. The data was consisted of syllabus, lesson plan, and existing reading materials. Based on the data, the existing reading materials were not appropriate for students of office administration department because those were intended for general students. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaires and interview to students and English teacher. This aimed to collect the data and information about students‟ needs and learning needs. The need analysis showed the needs of students on English reading materials. Based on the need analysis and material evaluation, the new reading materials were developed by associating to contextual teaching and learning approach, students‟ need and their department. The genre of text was procedure text which told about the manual steps. After designing the product, the experts validated the product. And finally, the English reading materials for office administration students could be used. The developed reading materials were how to use LCD projector in an office meeting, how to print a document, how to use a scanner, how to use a photocopier, and sending a fax. The product had been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the mean score was 3,585 from 4. The product was categorized as “ Very Good and Relevant” reading materials for eleventh grade students of office administration program.
