Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether there was a significant effectof Fishbone Strategy on students’analytical exposition writing ability. It wascunducted by using experimental research. The population of this study waseleventh grade of SMA N 1 Girsang Sipangan Bolon, which is consisted of 4parallel classes. Two classes were taken as a sample of the research. The class XIIPA 1 was an experimantal group and class XI IPA 3 as a control group. Theexperimental group was taught by using Fishbone Strategy, otherwise controlgroup was taught by using Discussion Method. The instrument for collecting datawas writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showsthat the value of t-obseved is higher than the value of t-table. (3,69>1,701(α =0,05)) with the degree of freedom (df) = 54. Based on the data analysis of thestudy, the result indicates that Fishbone Strategy affects on students’ analyticalexposition writing ability.

Registration Number: 2163121044. Developing Media By Using Podcast in Teaching Listening of Recount Text to Grade X Students of Tourism Vocational School. A Thesis. English Educational Program. State University of Medan.2020. The study was aimed to develop media by using Podcast in teaching Listening of Recount text to grade X students of Tourism Vocational School. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages: gathering the data, need analysis, design media, validating by experts, revising, and final project. The subject of the study was Grade X Students of Tourism Vocational School. The instruments of data collection were gathered by administrating interview and distributing questionnaire to 28 respondents to get students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result proved that the students need English learning media which can motivate students to understand listening recount text. The product was validated by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The product result was Podcast that contains audio media to be used in mastering the recount text listening. The result of experts’ validation showed that the media was an appropriate media to be used in teaching listening recount text by getting average percentage of 97.5% categorized as excellent. Abstract

This study concerned on improving students’ achievement in readaing comprehensionnarrative text through preview, question, read, reflect, recite, and review (PQ4R) technique.This study was limited on the second year junior high school students’ achievement inreading comprehension after teaching by applying preview,question, read, reflect, recite, andreview ( PQ4R).The objective of this study was to find out the improvement of students,achievement on reading comprehension through PQ4R technique.The subject of the studywas VIII-1 students of SMP N 4 Pagaran. The numbers of the students were 35. Thetechniques for data analysis were quantitative dataand qualitative data.In analyzing thequantitative data, the mean of the students’ score for the test I cycle I was 53.62, the meanscore of test II in cycle II was 73.28, the mean of test III in cycle II was 75.65. Theconclusion is that PQ4R can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehensionnarrative text.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to discover the effect of applying Discussion Strategy on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. The study was conducted by using experimental research design. The samples were taken by using random technique through lottery and two out of 7 classes were taken into samples, X-1 as experimental group was taught Discussion Strategy and X-3 as control group was taught Conventional Strategy, each class has 30 students. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of t0 (3,561) with the degree of freedom (df)=58 at the level of significance p (0,05) = 2,004. It means that t0 was considerably higher than tt (3,561 > 2,004). The result showed that Discussion Strategy had a significant effect on students’ writing achievement. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of Task-Based Learning Method on students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. This study was experimental in nature. The population of this study was the first year students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjung Balai. The total number of the population was 280 students in seven classes. There were 60 students chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. The experimental group was taught by using Task-Based Learning Method and control group was taught without using Task-Based Learning Method. The instrument for collecting the data was a writing test. To obtain test reliability, the writer applied the Pearson Product Formula. The calculation showed that the reliability of the test was  0.90. It was categorized as very high reliability. The data were analyzed by using the t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that the t-observed value was higher than t-table (2.34>2.00) at the level of significance 0.05 with a freedom degree of 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there was a significant effect of Task-Based Learning Method on students’ achievement in writing procedure texts.   Key Words: Task-Based Learning, Writing, Procedure Text.

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of Using Wordless Picture Book on students’ achievement in writing recount text. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade VIII, SMP Negeri 1 Stabat. Two classes from five parallel classes were taken by lottery technique which divided into two groups, 30 students as control group and 30 students as experimental group. The instrument used in this research is to find quantitative data. The analysis in were showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant  = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58, t-observed value 3.006 > t-table value > 2.000. The findings indicate that using Wordless Picture Book significantly affected the students’ writing achievement. So, English teachers are suggested to use Wordless Picture Book in order to improve students’ achievement in writing recount text.

Abstract

This study is analysis of classroom interaction between English and Mathematics subject which conducted by teachers and students through communication in classroom interaction. The aims of this study were: (a) To identify the kinds of Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) pattern are used by the teacher and students in classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model (1975), and (b) To find out why the Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) pattern is dominant in classroom interaction through different subject. The design of the research used qualitative research. To answer the problem of study, the data collected through the following instrument: observation, recording and interviewing which were analyzed by using Sinclair and Coulthard model and a concept of teaching. The results of this research were the following, (a) it was found that in English and Mathematics classroom discourse, as the IR (Initiation-Response) was used more often by teachers and I (Initiation) was used by students in English classroom then IF (Initiation-Feedback) was used by students in Mathematics classroom, (b) the reason why the IRF pattern dominantly appeared based on teacher’s performance which dominantly initiated questions and information was affected by the presage category and context category then the students’ performance which dominantly responded the teachers’ questions and information was affected by the students’ thought processes category.Key words: Classroom interaction, classroom discourse, Sinclair and Coulthard Model, IRF Pattern.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying SQ3R method inreading comprehension. Experimental research design is used as the research method.This research took place at SMA Nasrani 2Medan. There were 2 classes chosen as thesample with 30 students in each class. The classes were divided into two groups namelyexperimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using SQ3Rmethod and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrumentused to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which divided as pre test andpost test. The result of the research was analyzed by using t-test formula. The resultshowed that t-test was higher than t-table (4,23>2,00) at the level of significant 0,05with degree of freedom (df) 58. It means that hypothesis alternative (Ha) is acceptedwhich shows that SQ3R method significantly improves the student’s readingcomprehension.

Abstract

The Objective of this research were: (1) To develop ERM to meet the needs of second grade of dressmaking students at SMKN 10 Medan, (2) To Design ERM which is suitable to the needs of second grade of dressmaking students at SMKN 10 Medan. The subjects were the eleventh year students of dressmaking department at SMKN 10 Medan. The study was a Research and Development (R & D) study which is adapted from Borg and Gall (1983). This research were conducted by six phases, they are, Gathering information and data, Analyzing data, Designing new reading materials, Validating new reading materials, Revising new reading materials, Revised-developing reading materials. The Instruments for collecting the data were 30 questionarries need analysis and interview students, teacher and practitioner. The results from the data were the students need authentic material which related and appropriate to their need in order they can understand English well. The developed materials were validated by two experts, one is a lecture and the other is a teacher. The validator scored 4 creteria. The research findings showed that the developed materials were appropriate to be implemented. The average score of validation was 4,72 (lecture score) and 4,75 (teacher score). Based on the results of the study, conclusion and suggestions are directed to the teachers and institution who are teaching in SMKN 10 Medan generally to create and to develop the materials based on students need.

Registration Number: 2142121001Developing English Writing Worksheet of Narrative Text Based on Scientific Approach for The Tenth Grade Students of SMKN 7 Medan. English Educational Program, Medan State University, 2020. By using scientific approach as a learning material referring to curriculum 2013, the method used in this research is research and development. This research consists of five steps: 1) Gathering data and information, 2) Need analysis, 3) Developing the worksheet, 4) Validating the product, 5) Revising product and presented as a final product. The average score for student worksheet from the mean value from all aspects is 4.7. It could be concluded that the worksheet is categorized as “Very Good” since the position of the mean value was in the interval it is concluded that student worksheet by using scientific approach can be used and distributed as a learning material in English narrative text writing worksheet learning for SMKN 7 Medan grade X.
