Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text through Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique. The result of writing test showed that the students score kept improving significantly. The mean of post-test I was 80,525 and the mean of post-test II was 92,98. The mean score of post-test II in cycle II was the highest. The mean of post-test I until post-test II increased significantly from 80,525 to 92,98. The students became active participants,  enjoyable, and enthusiatis in teaching and learning process through Think-Pair-Share (TPS) Technique. The result of the research showed the progress of achievement scores, it can be concluded that Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique gives contribution to improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to know the Teachers’ Strategies on Teaching Reading Comprehension of Recount Text at Grade X of SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Empat. It was conducted by using qualitative research method. The subjects of this study are two English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Empat. The two teachers taught at Grade X. They chosen as the subject which were observed and interviewed. The writer used two instruments, they were observation and interview. This study found that the teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Simpang Empat used appropriate strategy in teaching reading comprehension of recount text and using the media to make the students be motivated and interested in learning. The teachers guided and managed the students in comprehending the material. The teachers' reason in using strategies is because the students get difficulties in comprehending the material if the teachers were used the traditional teaching strategies. The implementation of the strategy adapted by the teachers with the material, the indicator, the purpose of learning on the syllabus and curriculumn. All of the students were active and motivated in teaching and learning process. They were also brave to share the idea, asked the teacher when they found the problem on learning the material and answer the question that given by the teacher.

Abstract

The objective of this thesis are: to find out the implementation of the persuasive language used in the promotion strategy of Gelar Melayu Serumpun (GeMeS), and to find out the persuasive language occure in Gelar Melayu Serumpun (GeMeS). The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The data analysis of this thesis are library research, brochures, articles , invitation letters and social media. The data used in this study are the persuasive language of the Medan City Tourism Office as the organizer of the GeMeS event totaling three informant. The informant as the employee of Medan City Tourism Office is needed to complete the data. The persuasive language carried out by the GeMeS event organizers occure by distribusing various form of promotional media such as brochures, articles, invitation letters and social media. Medan City Tourism Office.The result showed that the implementation of the persuasive language used in the promotion strategy of the Serumpun Malay title (GeMeS) was divided into three parts, namely advertising persuasion, propaganda persuasion, and education persuasion.Keywords: Strategy, Promotion, Arts and Malay Culture, and Persuasion Language.

Abstract

This study concerns on how reading text materials are developed for vocational school. This study was conducted by using developmental research. The subject of this research was class XII SMK Sandhy Putra 2 Medan consisting of 36 students. Instrumentations for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have. Based on the students’ need analysis, then it was got some basic competences which need to be reached by the students, and based on the basic competences, syllabus can be designed. After syllabus had been designed, developing teaching materials was done. The developed teaching materials were related to the vocation that the students had; it was culinary art. The development of materials followed four stages; those were pre-development/ planning, development, evaluation, and revision.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out the types of lexical ambiguity and the most dominant type of lexical ambiguity used in analytical exposition texts in English Today 2 and Advanced Learning English 2 textbooks. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The research was mainly focused on the four types of lexical ambiguity proposed by Saeed, such as homonymy, polysemy, synonymy and antonymy. In carrying out this study, the data were taken from analytical exposition texts in reading materials and exercise material from the two English textbooks which contained of ambiguous words. The result of the study indicated the numbers of lexical ambiguity were 46 words within homonymy (34,8%), polysemy (28,2%), synonymy (19,6%), and antonymy (17,4%).

Abstract

The objective of this study aimed to analyzing higher order thinking skills of reading comprehension questions in English textbook for eleventh grade of senior high school. It also used qualitative research method for collected, analyzed and classified reading questions based on revised of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The data of this study were taken from reading comprehension questions in Contextual English textbook. The findings showed that the distribution of the higher order thinking skills looks like: the analyze skill obtains 20 out of 155 reading comprehension questions (12.9%) while the evaluate skill only obtains 4 out 155 questions (2.6%) and the create skill obtains 2 out of 155 questions (1.2%). The dominant level of the higher order thinking skills contained in analyze skill (12.9%). These results do not achieve proportion of thinking order skills namely 30% for C1 and C2, 40% for C3 and C4, and 30% for C5 and C6. It shows that the distribution of the higher order thinking skills in the reading comprehension questions in Contextual English textbook is unequal.

Abstract

In the process of learning English as a foreign language, many students make errors in pronouncing English words. This study aimed to identify kinds of pronunciation errors, specifically pronunciation errors on consonant and vowel sounds. And to find out the causes of error in English pronunciation of grade 11 students at SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The research was conducted by descriptive qualitative methods. In collecting data, firstly recording the pronunciation of students’ speaking performance. Then, transcribing their utterances which contains consonant and vowel sounds. Furthermore, the data are analyzed. Finally, the result of the analysis shows that the total of kinds of pronunciation errors are 40 data. Misformation is the most frequent errors were made by the students. It is the highest number which 23 data out of 40 or 57,5% of the percentage. Then, omission error which 8 data out of 40 or 20%. Addition error which 8 data out of 40 or 20%. And thelast kind of error is misordering. The data is 1 out of 40 or 2,5% of the percentage. This study also found the causes of students’ error according to interlingual and intralingual transfer.

Abstract

This study focused on the improvement of students’ achievement on writingnarrative text by using Clustering technique. The main objective of this study toknow whether clustering technique could significantly improve students’achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by applying classroomaction research which consisted two cycles in six meetings. Every meetingconsisted of four phases. The subject of this study was second grade students ofSMA Perguruan Sumatera Tanjung Morawa. Total of students was 29. Theinstruments for collecting data were writing tests for quantitative data and diarynotes, observation sheet, questionnaire sheet for qualitative data. Based on thestudents’ test, the students’ score was improved in every test. In Test I, the meanscore was 59,41. In the Test II, the mean score was 69,65. In the test III, the meanscore of the students was 78,17. The using clustering technique in every test tendsto be more effective. So, the mean of test improves and gets better.

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop English reading text materials about describing people, food and culinary spot based on students’ needs of Culinary Art. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was class X SMKN 10 Medan consisting of 32 students. The language skill was concerned on reading comprehension, particularly in descriptive text. Qualitative data consist of syllabus, lesson plan, and existing teaching materials. Instrumentation for collecting data were questionnaire, interview and existing materials. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have through questionnaire and interview. After the students’ need had been analyzed, the new reading materials was developed. The developed teaching materials were related to the vocation that the students had; it was culinary art. The development of materials followed six stages; those were gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new reading material, validating new reading material, revising new reading material, and final product revision. Based on the result of experts’ validation, the developing English reading text materials was equipped with adding one example in each exercise, adding the representative picture in each chapter and adding the generic structure of descriptive text on the reading text. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that developing English reading text materials is appropriate (4.32 = 86.55%) to use by the students of Culinary Art.

Abstract

This thesis entitled “The Reading Comprehension Strategies Used by Students of SMA N 3 Pematangsiantar” is designed to investigate the strategies implemented by the students in comprehending the reading texts and the underlying reasons why the students implemented the strategies as they did. Qualitative research design was conducted as the research method in this study. The subjects of this study were 6 students of grade eleventh at SMA N 3 Pematangsiantar in academic year 2017/2018. Three of the students were identified as the students who have high English ability, while the other three students have low English ability. The data were collected by in-depth interview. The data were analyzed by using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) data analysis technique. The findings of the study showed that the students implemented 4 strategies in comprehending the reading text, they are (1) Experience, (2) Summarize, (3) Re-read, and (4) Look up the words you don’t know. The underlying reasons of the strategies in comprehending the reading text are different for each strategy. The underlying reason for experience strategy is the reading comprehension facilitation, summary strategy is indicator of comprehension, re-read is the cognitive process, and look up the word you do not know is the lack of vocabulary mastery. Key words: Reading, Reading comprehension, strategies
