Abstract

Students’ achievement in writing descriptive text is very low, in this study Realia was applied to solve the problem. Action research in conducted for the result and the technique to collect the data, qualitative and quantitative are applied in this research. The subject of this research is grade VII in Junior High School (SMP N 2 ) Kisaran. In the first evaluation (66, 2926) increased to the mean of second evaluation (76, 7560) and the mean of third evaluation (87, 0243). Observation result showed that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of  Realia. Questionnaire and interview report showed that students agree that the application of Realia had helped them in writing descriptive text. It can be conclude that the students’ achievement is improved when thay are tought through Realia.   Key Words: Achievement, Writing, Descriptive Text and Realia

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the effect of using Scrabbles on Students’ Vocabulary Achievement. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the Seventh Grade students of SMP Sinar Harapan (72) the class sample (VII2) was taken purposively and divided into two smaller classes. The data collection in this study was done by giving multiple choice tests. The material was texts about mass communication and they were being informed to the students in two ways, by using scrabbles and non-scrabbles. Pre-test and post-test were administered to find out the score of every student. The scores were being calculated into mean classes and analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis result of this study showed that experimental group (Scrabbles Learning Class) has reached better result which was indicated by the mean 73,125 (mean of Experimental Group) compared to 63, 375 (mean of Control Group). Statistically the result of both groups after being tested by t-test formula shows that tobs 5,065 is higher than ttable 2.088 (tobs 5, 065 > ttable 2.088), this concluded that Ho is Rejected and Ha is Accepted.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the use of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text for the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 PercutSei Tuan in the academic year of 2019/2020. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation and interview to the process of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text and students’ self-predicted essay questions and answers as supported data. The result of observation, interview, and students’ self-predicted essay questions and answers prove that the use of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text for the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 PercutSei Tuan was 87%. Based on the result, the use of PORPE strategy which was done by the teacher were well-structured. Thus, the reason why PORPE considered to be applied because PORPE is appropriate in teaching reading descriptive text. The strategy made students more critical towards the questions because in every step they had to think critically and remember all the key points in the passage. The data were analyzed by using Sugiyono (2008) theory. It was supported that the percentage of each steps of PORPE strategy were predict (89%), organize (83%), rehearse (67%), practice (100%), and evaluate (100%). This showed that the students were interested in PORPE strategy and the average of students’ score of self-predicted essay questions and answers was 91. This number is categorized as good according to Nurgiyantoro’s Criterion Referenced Evaluation. Thus, PORPE strategy is effective and appropriate to be used in reading text, particularly descriptive text.Keywords: PORPE strategy, reading, descriptive text.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to improve the students’ speaking The main objectiveof this study is to know how effective the use of Peer Response Technique in teachingwriting recount texts is. This study was conducted under the consideration that thestudents often get difficulties in retelling events in their own activities. In order toachieve the objective of the study, the writer designed an action research. The subjectsof this study was the first grade students of SMA An-Nizam Medan. The number of thesubjects of this study was 27 students. During the research, the students becoming thesubjects were taught by using Peer Response technique in teaching writing recounttexts. There were two cycles in this action research. Each cycle consisted of four phases.Before giving treatments in those two cycles, the students were given pre-test. Aftereach treatment in each cycle, the students were tested. And the last, they were givenpost-test and questionnaire. The result of this research showed that the students’ abilityin writing recount texts improved after a series of treatments given in the cycles. It canbe seen by comparing the means of their tests. The mean score for the pre-test was56.96, the mean score for test 1 was 69,85 while the mean score for the post-test was78,11. It is clear that after applying Peer Response Technique in each treatment, themean of each test improves and gets better. The use of Peer Response technique is oneof the ways to make students interest in studying English especially writing recounttext.

Abstract

This study deals with lexical density of English reading texts in the textbook of junior high school. The objectives of the study are to find out the lexical density of reading texts of English in Focus textbook, the text which has the highest lexical density in the reading texts, and the reason of the text which has the highest lexical density in reading texts. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were the English reading texts of English in Focus textbook for ninth grade students of junior high school published by National Education Department. The result of the analysis showed that: (1) The lexical density of procedure texts are 5.90, 5.08, 5.5, and 4.69, report texts are 5.92, 4.22, 4.06, and 3.64 and narration texts are 2.92 and 2.90. The score showed that the lexical density of eleven reading texts on English in Focus textbook for ninth grade of junior high school is categorized medium based on the Halliday’s theory. It means that the texts are not difficult, easy to understand and suitable for ninth grade students of junior high school. (2) The highest lexical density of the reading texts is report text entitled “The Chinese Influence in Indonesian Visual Art” (5.92) because of the higher number of lexical items than grammatical items, few clauses and more vocabularies of words. (3) Report text has the highest lexical density because of the high proportion of lexical items in the text and it also because of the generic structure, language features and the style of writing report text.

This research was aimed to develop English digital conversation media for speaking activities based on the students’ need at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab.Langkat. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. There were seven steps applied in this research, the steps were: 1). Potential and Problem 2). Gathering data and information 3). Product design 4). Validating to experts 5). Revising Design 6). Product test 7). Final product revision. The subject of this research was tenth grade students of social science at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab. Langkat. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaires and interview. The data analyzed by using descriptive technique. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated using percentage by Suharto (2006) to get an information of students’ need before developing digital conversation media. Expert judgment data were calculated by using Likert Scale, mean and criteria interval of expert judgment to know the validity of digital conversation media which has been develop. The result of expert validation was 4,5 which mean English conversation media is Very Good category. Therefore the media is appropriate to use in the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Kec.Binjai Kab.Langkat to teach speaking. Abstract

This study aims to discover the improvement of the students’ achievementin writing narrative text by applying Spore Strategy. The objective of this study isto find out whether the Spore strategy can improve students’ achievement inwriting narrative text or not. This study was conducted by using classroom actionresearch. The subject of the research was class XI IPA 2 of SMA Negeri 6 Medanwhich consists of 34 students. This study applied quantitative and qualitative data.The data of this study were obtained quantitatively through writing test whichshow that the students score kept improving in every test and qualitatively basedon diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet which show that teachinglearning process ran well, the students were active, enthusiastic, and interested inwriting. In the first test, the mean score was 56.8. In the second test, the meanscore was 67.2, and in the third test the mean score was 81.2.The researchfindings indicated that Spore Strategy significantly improved students’achievement in writing narrative text.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the ability of the first year students in speaking by using storytelling at MAS. Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population of this research was 20 students of XC class in the first grade at MAS. Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah. In selecting the sample the writer used random sampling technique. The total number of the sample was 12 students. The data was collected by using oral test. The researcher only measured the ability of students’ speaking in storytelling by considering five components of speaking: (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension). And their speaking had been recorded by using phone recorder. From the result of analyzing the data, the researcher found that the students’ speaking ability by using storytelling was moderate. It proved by the fact that 4 students (33.33%) classified as high ability, 4 students (33.33%) classified as moderate ability, and 4 students (33.33%) classified as low ability. Based on the data, the students’ score were bigger in the high and moderate level than in the low ability level. Based on the research finding, the English teacher is suggested to consider the five components in scoring speaking ability (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension). The students are suggested to do more practice in pronunciation and fluency, because they dominantly speak incorrect pronunciation and have pauses in the sentences. Students are also suggested to enrich their vocabulary by using storytelling.

Abstract

This study aims to develop media of teaching speaking to 10th Grade at SMA Gajah Mada developed by using Jenga. The research was conducted by using developmental research, the research will be used to develop new products and procedures. This study was conducted through six phases of Research and Development (R&D) design; data collection and data collection, data analysis, material design, expert validation, revision, and final product. The data were gathered by conducting an interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 22 respondents to get the students’ needs. The results of the interview and questionnaire indicate that students need English-speaking media that can inspire and enable students to speak English actively. The board game and other Jenga equipment such as blocks, dice, and cards were the result of the product. Experts have validated the products. It can be inferred that the media was valid with the maximum score was 140 for the excellent result. The results showed 92.1% or 129 from the first validator and 90% or 126 from the second validator, and it was classified as important, appropriate and possible to use as learning media for students.Keywords: Jenga for Teaching Speaking, Speaking Media, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive text through Group Investigation technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research that has two cycles within. The first cycle was conducted in four meetings and the second cycle was conducted in two meetings. The subject of the research was the students of grade VIII at Yayasan Pendidikan El Hidayah Madrasah Tsanawiyah Desa Lalang Sunggal which consisted of 28 students. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative (writing test) and qualitative data (observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and diary notes). Based on the writing test scores, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the orientation test the mean score was 59.42, in the first cycle, the mean score of the competence score was improved to be 68.17, in the second cycle; the mean of the competence score was also improved to be 76.85. Based on the observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and diary notes, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in writing. The result of the research showed that Group Investigation Technique could improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.
