Abstract

This Study was an experimental research. The objective was to discover thesignificance of using magic square game in improving 10th grader students’speaking achievement. Twenty students were taken as the sample: 10 students forthe experimental group and 10 students for the control group. The students in theexperimental group were given magic square game as the media to practice theirspeaking skill. The magic square game was used to improve students’achievement in speaking, while the control group were taught without the magicsquare game. They only use textbooks. The students’ performance were evaluatedby using Fulcher’s (2003) Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Weighting Table. Thescoring was done by the English teacher and the researcher. The research findingsshows that the reliability of the test was high, i.e. 0,99, whereas the T-observedvalue at the level of significance 0,05 is 20 and it was lower than the T-critic(22).Therefore, the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that thestudents’ speaking achievement taught by using magic square game wassignificantly higher than those whom taught without using magic square game. So,English teacher are suggested to use magic square game in practicing the students’speaking achievement.Key words: Magic-Square game, Speaking Achievement

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop learning media in Writing Descriptive Text for Grade VIII of Junior Highschool Students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.. The subject of the study was Grade VIII of SMP N 3 LubukPakam. The data were gathered  by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students needs English learning media which can motivate the students to understand about the descriptive writing. The product has been validated by experts. The result of the product was videos that contain audio-visual media to be used in mastering the descriptive text writing. Keywords: Cartoon Story Maker, Descriptive Text, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ vocabulary achievement through Clustering Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII-B SMP Katolik Trisakti 2 Medan that consisted of 32 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were vocabulary tests for quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet for qualitative data. Students’ score kept improving in every test. In the first cycle test, the mean of vocabulary score was 64.68. And in the second cycle test, the mean of vocabulary score was 79.85. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, teaching and learning process had done effectively showed the improvement. Every student was studied actively. And from the research can be concluded that Clustering Technique can improve students’ achievement in vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the GI and LD level, the text which has the highest GI and LD and what make the text has the highest GI and LD of Advanced Learning English 2 textbook. This study was conducted by using qualitative research. The data of study were the 18 texts inside of the Advanced Learning English 2 textbook for grade XI Senior High School. The data were analyzed by using Eggins (2004) theory. The result of this study: 1) GI level of text was high based on Eggins theory that the texts had more complex clauses than simple clause. Text 1 was 0.52. Text 2 was 1.24. Text 3 was 0.84. Text 4 was 0.92. Text 5 was 1.95. Text 6 is 1.46. Text 7 was 1.03. Text 8 was 0.90. Text 9 was 1.62. Text 10 was 1.85. Text 11 was 1.64. Text 12 was 2.25. Text 13 was 2.60 Text 14 was 1.40. Text 15 was 1.80. Text 16 was 4.00. Text 17 was 1.42. Text 18 was 1.73. The LD level of text was low based on Eggins theory that the texts had more content carrying lexical item than non-content carrying lexical items . Text 1 was 0.56. Text 2 was 0.52. Text 3 was 0.52. Text 4 was 0.54. Text 5 was 0.55. Text 6 was 0.40. Text 7 was 0.42. Text 8 was 0.36. Text 9 was 0.44. Text 10 was 0.46. Text 11 was 0.44. Text 12 was 0.39. Text 13 was 0.38. Text 14 was 0.38. Text 15 was 0.42. Text 16 was 0.38. Text 17 was 0.46. Text 18 was 0.42. 2) The text had the highest GI was 4.00 within title Removing Lead from Petrol in hortatory exposition text and the text had the highest of LD was 0.56 within title Panda in report text. 3)The length of the sentence didn’t influence the grammatical intricacy of the text but the more clause complexes and content carrying lexical items could make the reader difficult to process the text.

English Education Program, Universitas Negeri Medan, 2020. The objective of this study were; (1) To describe types of teacher’s feedback in the speaking activities of the tenth grade students of SMA N 20 Medan, (2) To describe the students’ perception of the feedback given by the teacher in the speaking activities of the tenth grade students of SMA N 20 Medan, and (3) To analyses how does the teacher give feedback in speaking activities of the tenth grade students of SMA N 20 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research was designed through two stages; gathering information and analyzing data. The subject of the study was Grade X of SMA N 20 Medan. The instruments of data collection was gathered by distributing questionnaire and administrating interview. The study conducted distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents of the students and administrating interview to the English teacher and students. The questionnaire and interview results proved that the students need the teacher’s feedback which can motivate the students to understand about the speaking activity. Observations were done by attending the speaking classes and making field notes of all what happened in the classroom setting during the speaking learning and teaching process. With the help of audiorecorder, the researcher recorded all the speech events of the classroom community members under observation. This audio recording technique enabled the researcher top reserve the authenti city of the data. To gain comprehensive and accurate data, the researcher crosschecked the data obtained by comparing these data with those which were obtained by interviewing some of the students and the English teacher involvedin the research. The researcher also distributed the questionnaire to all of the students in the class. These accurate data where then (1) transcribed, (2) read, (3) identified,(4) categorized, and (5) analyzed to answer the research questions as those which were mentioned in the formulation of the problem. To check the trustworthiness of the data, triangulation was also used. The researcher compared the gathered data withot her relevant researches and theories and consulted the lecturers involved in thestudy. Based on the analysis of teacher’s feedback, it is figured out that the teacher mostly gave feedback in the form of explicit corrections. Also, the teacher’s feedback focused more on the phonological errors, especially pronunciation. Keywords: Speaking activity, teacher’s feedback, Research.

Abstract

This study attempts to increase students’ vocabulary achievement by using flash cards. The objective of the study is to investigate whether the using of flash card can improve students’ vocabulary achievement. This study conduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study of SD Negeri 174559 Siraituruk, Porsea which consisted of 34 students. For collecting data, the instruments used were quantitative (vocabulary test) and qualitative data (interview sheet, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the data, it was found that the mean of the second cycle (80, 44) is higher than the mean of first cycle (64, 85) and pre-test (44, 41).  Based on interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes, it was found thee students were more active and more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. It was concluded that teaching vocabulary by using  flash cards can improve the students’ vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the cognitive dimension based on Revised BloomTaxonomy in reading questions in Look Ahead an English Course for Senior HighSchool Level 1, 2, & 3. This study used quantitative research design. The sampleswere 141 reading questions which taken by using random sampling technique byusing Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0. in Look Aheadan English Course for Senior High School Level 1, 2, & 3. The data were analyzedby using Table analysis of cognitive dimension of Revised Bloom Taxonomy. Theanalysis showed that the most dominant cognitive dimension of Revised BloomTaxonomy in remembering dimension (57.45%). The second dominant cognitivedimension is understanding dimension (26.24%). The third dominant cognitivedimension is evaluating dimension (10.64%). The fourth dominant cognitivedimension is creating dimension (3.55%). The fifth dominant cognitive dimension isanalyzing dimension (2.13%). There was no cognitive dimension of applyingdimension that applied in reading question of the textbooks.

Abstract

The problem of the study in this research is: how is the procedure for the Malam Bainai process at the Minangkabau community wedding ceremony and what is the meaning contained in the implementation of the Malam Bainai at the Minangkabau community wedding ceremony. The research design used is a qualitative descriptive research method by using Pierce’s theory. Then, the informants of this research are people who understand Minangkabau cultures, such as Masters of art and culture who graduated from the University of arts in Padang Panjang, overseas arts, and culture teachers from Padang Panjang, and people who are members of the Minangkabau community in Medan City. The results showed that the Malam Bainai procedure consisted of four series, namely Bamandi, Meniti kain kuniang, Malam Bainai, and Bakameh-kameh. The meaning of the Malam Bainai ceremony is carried out as a form of cultural heritage that has been carried out from generation to generation and as a form of releasing girls from their parents to become brides and companions in other people's lives.Keywords: Linguistics, Semiotics, Malam Bainai, Minangkabau Wedding Ceremony

Abstract

This study deals with improvement students’ achievement in reading report text by using Think Pair Share Strategy (TPS). This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X-2 SMA Negeri 1 Binjai with consists of 40 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consists of three meetings and included orientation. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (multiple choice test) and qualitative data (diary notes, and observation sheet). Based on reading comprehension score, students score kept improving in every test. In orientation test the mean was 52,75, in cycle I the mean of reading test was 66,75, in cycle II the mean of reading comprehension score was 80,25. Based on diary notes, and observation sheet, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. Students were active and interested in reading report text. The result of the research showed that Think Pair Share Strategy (TPS) can improve students’ achievement in reading report text.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop teaching materials on narrative text based on the students’ needs. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design. The data was consisted of information who gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing questionnaires to the students. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires, interview, and syllabus. The result of this study was a set of developed teaching material. It covered of three units, they were: the story between animal and human, animal, and plant which were included into three texts, they were: Abrahah’s elephant, Neli’s fruit, story between Pleci’s trumpets and its fireworks. Each of the text comprised of three kinds of exercise and in the first page there was an explanation about narrative genre and its social function were provided.
