Abstract

This study investigated the effect of using mind mapping strategy on the students’ achievement in writing procedure text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was grade X students of SMA Negeri 1 Merbau Labura divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using mind mapping strategy, while the control group was taught by using lecturing method. The instruments used to collect the data was writing procedure text. After the data were analyzed, it was found that the value of t-observed was 2.764 with the degree of freedom (df)= 58 at the level of significance 0.05. It means that t-observed was higher than t-table (2.764 >2.000). The result of this study showed that teaching procedure text by using mind mapping strategy was higher than that by using lecturing method. It implies that mind mapping strategy is appropriate to be applied for writing procedure text.

Abstract

This study deals with the developing writing descriptive text for students of vocational school. The objective of the study is to develop the English writing materials to cope with the students’ needs for grade X students of Tourism Program in SMKN 1 Sidikalang for better materials which are appropriate with the students’ need of tourism program. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. The subject of the research was 2017/2018 students of tenth grade of class X UPW 1 at SMKN 1 Sidikalang. The number of the students was 35 students. The data of this study was collected based on the questionnaire analysis, the interview analysis, the experts judgment and selective writing text. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated by using percentage to get the information of students’ need before developing writing text materials particularly descriptive text. Expert judgment data was calculated by using criteria interval of expert judgment to know validity of writing materials which has been developed. The writing materials were in the form of writing text and writing skills which consisted of thirteen tasks. After the data analyzed, it was found that the expert’s judgment result was 4.5which had a very good criteria interval. The result of the research finds that the developed writing materials are relevant which cope with the students’ need and appropriate to be used in teaching and learning.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of using Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method on Students’ Achievement in Writing Recount Text. This study was conducted by experimental research. The population of this study was the students of the tenth grade of SMA SWASTA SULTAN ISKANDAR MUDA MEDAN. The total number of the population was one hundred sixty students in 6 classes. There were sixty students chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. The experimental group was taught by using CTL Method and control group was taught without using CTL Method. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed value is higher than t-table (2.34>2.00) at level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there is a significant effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method on students’ achievement in writing recount text. Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the pronunciation errors in long vowels in speaking test that have been made by the office administration and travel agency students SMK Negeri 1 Binjai. It was conducted by using qualitative research. The sample of this stufy is 30 students which is from office administration and travel agency students. The instrument of this research is speaking test that recorded in each student. The results shown the total errors in office administration students are 103 while in travel agency students are 118. The percentage of the error of office administration class is 47% and the percentage of the error of travel agency class is 53%. It shown that their ability in speaking test is still low. It was concluded that office administration students are better than travel agency students in speaking.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) find out the media used in teaching speaking for the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Medan, (2) determine the media needed by tenth grade students in speaking skills, and (3) to develop the valid media for teaching speaking based on the needs of tenth grade students. The research was conducted by using the Research and Development method from Gall, Gall, and Borg (2003). The research subject was X MIA 7 students of SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The research object is to develop the teaching English media for speaking skill by using ClassDojo Application. The instrument used was student questionnaire. The data was collected using questionnaires validation sheets. The validator consists of the English lecturer and teacher. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that: (1) the media used by teacher does not support teaching and learning processes, (2) interactive media such as ClassDojo is the media which is needed by students, and (3) the developed media have been valid with a percentage of 90% from lecturer and 86%% from the English teacher and this media is appropriate and applicable to use regarding the students' needs for speaking skills.Keywords: ClassDojo, Speaking, Research and Development (R&D), Teaching Media

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to improve students’ vocabulary achievement on Grade VIII by applying crossword puzzle. It was conducting by using Classroom Action Research. The subject was 38 students of grade VIII of SMPN 35 Medan and was conducted in two cycles. It is consisted of two kinds of instruments namely quantitative and qualitative data. For quantitative data was used vocabulary test which was teachers’ made, and for qualitative data were used diary notes and interview sheets. Based on the data and data analysis, it can be seen that there was an improving of students’ score in cycle I and cycle II, which can be approved from the mean of each test, that were 65.90, 73.92, and 81,25. After applied the crossword puzzle, it can be seen that that vocabulary achievement of the students in SMPN 35 Medan was increase. The research result showed that the application of crossword puzzle in teaching English especially in vocabulary is an effective way to improve the students’ achievement.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out whether students pay more attention to picture, get information from picture and understanding the content of the text. It was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research. The source of the data was taken from the textbook entitled English in Focus published by Nur Ilmu, Yudhistira and students’ grade VIII of SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. There are 9 classes of grade VIII which consists of 325 students, and VIII-1 was taken as the sample of this research. The data of this study were obtained from the students’ score of reading test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the competence in predicting information through picture is very good. From 38 sample students, there were 21 students (55,3%) got very good score or can predict more than 5 details of information from the text, 15 students (39.5%) got good score or can predict less than 5 details of information from the text and only 2 students (5.2%) got bad score or predict less than 2 information. As well as their reading comprehension of the text with mean score 82.37 which is higher than the Minimal Completeness Criteria (KKM) of reading applied by SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. It can be concluded that The result of this research is appropriate to the theory which claim that pictures are useful for getting students to predict what is coming next in a lesson and help the students comprehend the text easily.

State University of Medan, 2020.This research was intended to examine the verbal interaction features used by twoteachers in teaching reading comprehension through virtual classroom with zoomapplication. This virtual class was chosen since the offline classroom was changedinto online classroom during the covid 19 pandemic. This research was conductedto answer the research problems; 1. How are the teachers and the students verbalinteraction patterns used in reading classroom of SMP Parulian 2 Medan. 2 Whydo the teachers interact in the way they do? It covers the analysis on thetranscripts of teachers-student verbal interaction and the interview. The analysiscovers the steps of data condensation. In the process of data condensing, allrecorded utterances were selected to focus on the utterances used by the teachersand students during the virtual classroom. Then, the utterances were simplified inorder to be easier to understand. The abstracting process was done to focus on theintention of answering the research problems. The final step was transforming theutterances and interview into transcription. The design of this research is a casequalitative study. The subjects were two English teachers and twenty students ofParulian Junior High School. The data to answer the problems were transcripts ofverbal interaction used by the teachers and students and interview to find thereasons of the teachers to use certain patterns students during the virtualclassroom. The data were collected by using recording tools; smart phonerecording and observational notes. The findings show that the teachers’ verbalclassroom interaction did not cover all types of interactional features by Walsh.The verbal interactions through zoom virtual classroom by the first teacher consistof seven types of interactional features. They are Display questions (0,53%),Seeking clarification (0,21%), Extended wait-time (0,125%), Scaffolding(0,003%), Direct repair (0,003%), Confirmation checks (0,003%), Teacher echo(0,003%). While. The verbal interactions through zoom virtual classroom by thesecond teacher consist of seven types of interactional features. They are Display questions (0,29%), Scaffolding (0,023%), Extended wait-time (0,23%), Seekingclarification(0,12%), Confirmation checks (0,032%), Teacher interruptions(0,032%), Direct repair (0,016%), Content feedback ( 0,016%), Extended learnerturn (0,016%), Teacher echo (0,016 %). The most frequently used of interactionalfeature is display questions. The reason to use display questions is material focus.The teachers wanted the students to focus on the material.Keywords: Classroom Verbal Interaction, Pedagogical goal, ReadingClassroom.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the effect of story mapping strategy on grade VIII students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The Population of this research was the eighth (VIII) grade students of St. Thomas 1 Junior High School Medan. There were two classes as the sample. The first class (VIII-F) as the experimental group, while the second class (VIII-B) as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using story mapping strategy while control group was taught by using lecturing strategy. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the score of students in the experimental group by using story mapping strategy was higher than the score of students in the control group by using lecturing strategy, at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 38, the t-observed was 2,818 while the t-table was 2,024. Therefore, the applying of story mapping strategy significantly affected the students’ achievement in writing narrative text.

Abstract

This study deals with media in learning English especially reading descriptive text for the seventh-grade students. The objective of the study were to develop a Scramble Game using ClassDojo as a media in learning English especially descriptive text for junior high school. This study was conducted by research and development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing Scramble Game Using ClassDojo as media in descriptive text, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was the seventh-grade students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan. The instruments for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to the seventh-grade students to get the students’ needs. The evaluators of the developed media were two experts namely an English lecturer and English teacher. The findings show that Scramble Game Using ClassDojo was able to be developed into media in learning English using the research method and needs analysis. The result of the research was the Scramble Game media that the teacher can use as the learning media of descriptive text for the seventh-grade students of junior high school. The developed media have been validated by experts. The total of validation score from the Expert I and Expert II are 91.8% so it was categorized “Very Good”. It means the developing Scramble Game Using ClassDojo are appropriate as media in reading descriptive text and can be used for the seventhgrade students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan in learning English especially descriptive text.Key Words: Research and Development (R&D), Reading, Media, Descriptive Text, Scramble Game, ClassDojo.
