Abstract

This study concerrns with Improving the Students Writing Narrative Text by ApplyingCooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique.The objective was toinvestigate improvement of students’ writing narrative text by applying CooperativeIntegrated Reading and Composition Technique. This research was conducted by usingaction research method. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of MTS Al-Hasanah Medan totalling to 29 students. They were taught writing by cooperativeintegrated reading and composition technique. The instruments for collecting data werequantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, andinterview sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score keptimproving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 43, 2, in the cycle Itest the mean was 55, 6. In the cycle II test the mean was 67.2. The percentage oforientation test was 10, 34%, cycle I test was 24, 13% and cycle II test was 86, 20%.The finding of the research showed that applying Cooperative Integrated Reading andComposition Technique significantly improved students’ writing. The qualitative datashow that the students were more interested and motivated on writing throughcooperative integrated reading and composition technique. It is suggested that teachersshould apply cooperative integrated reading and composition technique as one ofmethods to improve students’ writing.

Abstract

This research deals with an error analysis. The objectives of the study are (1) to identify and classify the kinds of regular and irregular verbs error find in recount, narrative, procedure, and descriptive writing by the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai, (2) to know the most dominant text getting regular and irregular verbs error by the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai, (3) to find out the causes of regular and irregular verbs error in recount, narrative, procedure, and descriptive writing by the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai. The research design that was used in this study is descriptive research. The sources of data were taken from the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai which consists of 40 students who were chosen by taking the X-2 class as the sample. In this research, the writing text was used as collecting data. The result of the analysis shows that: (1) the errors of regular and irregular verbs in recount, narrative, procedure, and descriptive writing made by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungbalai were 112 occurrences of all errors. The most dominant text getting regular and irregular verbs was narrative text occurred 40 cases (10 regular verbs and 30 irregular) or (36%), it was followed by recount text occurred 36 cases (7 regular verbs and 29 irregular verbs) or (32%) then the descriptive text occurred 26 cases (7 regular verbs and 19 irregular verbs) or (23%) and the last was Procedure text occurred 10 cases (2 regular verbs and 8 irregular verbs) or (8%).

Abstract

This study attempted to improve students’ achievement in writing report text through numbered heads together. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII/B at SMP SWASTA UPMI Medan that consisted of 32 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and the first cycle consisted of four meetings and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instrument for collecting quantitative data was a writing test and the instrument for collecting quantitative data included diary notes, observation sheets, interview and questionnaire sheets. Based on the writing test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In test I, the mean was 66,4375, in test II the mean was 78,125 and in test III the mean was 87,5625. Based on the observation sheets and questionnaire sheets, it was found that the teaching learning process ran well. Students were active and interested in writing. The result of the research showed that Number Heads Together (NHT) significantly improved students’ achievement in writing report text. Key Words: Writing, Report, Number Heads Together.

Abstract

This study deals with the Effect of Applying Interactive Notation System forEffective Reading and Thinking (INSERT) Strategy on Students’ Achievement inReading Analytical Exposition Text. The objective of the study is to find outwhether Interactive Notation System for Effective Reading and Thinking(INSERT) Strategy significantly affects the students’ achievement in readinganalytical exposition text. It was an experimental research. The subject of thestudy was the students of eleventh (XI) grade students of SMA Negeri 1 TebingTinggi. The sample was divided into two groups. The Experimental group wastaught by applying Interactive Notation System for Effective Reading andThinking (INSERT) strategy, while the control group was taught by applyingQuestion Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy. Levels of reading comprehensionused in the reading test were literal, interpretative and critical reading. Thepercentages of each level were 35%, 45% and 20%.To obtain the reliability of thetest, the writer applied Kuder Richardson formula (KR-21). The result of thecalculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.83, which means that thereliability of the test is very high. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula.The analysis showed that tobserved is exceeded than ttable (4.10 > 2.00) at the level ofsignificance of 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. The findings indicate thatusing Interactive Notation System for Effective Reading and Thinking (INSERT)strategy significantly affected the students’ reading analytical exposition text.

Abstract

This study aims to develop English reading materials needed by students of Vocational School and develop English reading materials for students of Audio Video Program based on Contextual Teaching and Learning. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. It was conducted in SMK N 1 PercutSei Tuan, especially grade X. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 23 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Audio Video program.The average scores are the first from English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as suitable or approriate for grade X of Audio Video program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Audio Video Program.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out The Effect of Applying ETR(Experience Text Relationship) Method on the Students’ ReadingComprehension. This study used experimental design. The sample was 50% of thetenth grade of Madrasah Aliyah Swasta PPM Babussalam in academic 2012/2013.60 students of the two classes were chosen as the representative of the population.They were divided into two groups. The first group (experimental group) wastaught by using Experience Text Relationship Method and the second group(control group) was taught by using conventional method. The tests consisted oftwo types; they are pre-test and post-test. The instrument of the data collectionwas multiple choices test consisting of 25 items. The data were analyzed by usingt- test formula. The result of the data analysis showed that t- observed was 5.35and t-table was 2.00 (p = 0.05). It means t-observed was higher than t-table (tobserved= 5.35 > t-table = 2.00 ; p = 0.05). It proved that there was a significanteffect of applying experience text relationship method on the students’ readingcomprehension.

Abstract

This study attempts to describe the conformity between reading materials in English on Sky 2 Textbook for grade VIII students’ of junior high school and the requirements of School-Based Curriculum in the aspects of indicators, text types, social function, rhetorical structure, and linguistic features. It was designed as documentary analysis in the form of descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were reading materials collected from English on Sky 2 Textbook published by Erlangga in 2007. Based on the analysis of those aspects, it was found that the aspect of indicators gains 81.66% conformity, the aspect of Text types gains 66.66% conformity as the six text types required by School-based Curriculum are not all presented in the textbook, the aspect of social function gains 37.5 % conformity, moreover, the aspect of rhetorical structure gains 100% conformity, and the aspect of linguistic features gains 100% conformity. From the data obtained, the total conformity between the textbook and the requirements of School-based Curriculum attains 77.16% conformity. This number is categorized as good according to Nurgiyantoro’s Criterion Referenced Evaluation. Therefore, this textbook is appropriate to be used by both teachers and students in English language teaching, particularly in teaching reading as this textbook has already followed the instructions and the requirements of School-based Curriculum.

Abstract

A TRANSITIVITY ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS’ WRITING RECOUNT TEXT *Septyana D Sianipar ** Siti Aisah Ginting ** Tiarnita M. S Siregar Abstract The objectives of this study were to find out the types of transitivity system used on students’ writing recount texts. Further, this study also aims to identify the types of transitivity systems realized in students’ writing recount texts. This study was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative design method. The data were 15 pieces of recount texts written by tenth grade students of SMAN 21 Medan being analyzed as the data. From this research, it was found that in all units of students’ writing recount texts, there were 249 clauses. In these clauses, all process types can be found with varieties of the usage, they were: material process, mental process, relational process, behavioral process, verbal process, and existential process. As for the participants, almost all can be found in students’ recount texts: actor, goal, range, senser, phenomenon, token, value, carrier, attribute, possessor, possessed, behaver, sayer, verbiage, existent, and beneficiary ones. Only two participants were not found in the texts: the range and the target ones. As for circumstances, there were seven circumstances found in the students’ recount texts: extent, location, manner, cause, accompaniment, and matter. The contingency, angle, and role aspects however, were not found. The realization of the transitivity system on students writing recount texts, were found with varieties of the usage in constructing language features of the students’ recount texts. The processes were realized by personal pronoun, direct and indirect objects. Finally, the circumstances were realized by prepositional and adverbial phrases. Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether the application of Teams-Games-Tournament Technique improve the students achievement in Speaking. This study was an classroom action research. The subject of this study was class XI IPA 3 SMA Muhammadiyah 8 Kisaran which consists of 35 students. The study was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II was consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative (oral speaking test) and qualitative data (observation sheet and diary note). Based on speaking scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation and based on observation sheet and diary note, it was found that teaching and learning process ran well. Students could enlarge their thinking process. The result of this study showed that Teams-Games-Tournament improved students’ achievement in speaking.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the phenomenon which occurred in classroom setting dealing with teacher’s strategies in teaching reading. It was designed in descriptive qualitative research. The location of this study was MTs Al-Jam’iyatul Washliyah Tembung and the samples were the English teacher and the students of IX-4 class who were selected by using random sampling technique. The data of this study deals with kinds of teacher’s strategies in teaching reading procedure text. The data were collected from the observation which occurred during the reading procedure text class and the interview with the English teacher. The data were analyzed by three stages : 1) familiarizing and organizing, 2) coding and reducing, and 3) interpreting and representing. From the data analysis and the data verification, it was obtained that the teacher used three strategies in teaching reading comprehension procedure text, namely activating background knowledge strategy, visualizing strategy, and questioning strategy. The strategies not only were beneficial to promote and improve students’ comprehension but also they encouraged the students to be active, enthusiastic, and critical readers.
