This research focuses on personality trait of Kim KiTaek's character based on theory of McCrae and Costa (1990), social inequality problemsexperienced by Kim Ki Taek's character based on Abad Badruzaman (2009: 284) and moralvalues in film “parasite” based on Wantah (2006). The results of this research were (1)personality traits of Kim Ki Taek character were oppeners and neuroticism but is low inagreeableness, (2) Social inequality of Kim Ki Taek character were social inequality – economy,(3) Moral values of “Parasite” film were Moral Ethics and Decency.Keywords: Personality Traits, Social Inequality, Poverty, Moral.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the cognitive level of the reading questions in English textbook for grade XI based on the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were the reading questions in the English textbook for grade XI Senior High School. The result of this study was the whole reading questions in the textbook covering all of the cognitive levels, they were Remembering (26,02%), Understanding (26,02%), Applying (9,18%), Analyzing (33,16%), Evaluating (1,53%), and Creating (4,08 %).

Abstract

The aim of this stuy was to develop writing speaking through media for eightth grade of Junior High School Student in SMP Swasta Panca Abdi Binjai. By using Research & Development design with six stages, they were Gathering Information and Data, Analyzing Data, Material Design, Validating by Experts, Revising, and Final Product. With 30 individuals responses as the data subjects through Interviews and Questionnaires. From the material, the first validator scored 75,8% of excellent, and the score from the second validator was 82,8%, and it was categorized as relevant. And from the media, 52% from the first validator, and 50% of the highest score from the second. In means that the media were valid and appropriate to use as learning media for students. The results of the product was Prezi Next as the presentation and learning online media for those individuals. Later on, the media was test using Recount Text as the measurement of the media to these subjects. This also leads to attractive media which introduced to help them motivated and keep interested. Thus, the media were valid and appropriate to use as learning media for students.Keywords: Prezi Next, Recount Text, Research and Development.

Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the effect of Music Video on the students’ achievement in writing narrative text. The objective was to find outthe effect of Music video to improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text. This study was conducted by experimental research. The population of this study was the eleventh grade students’ of SMA Negeri7 Medan. Two classes from ten parallel classes was taken for the observation by cluster random sampling which divided into two groups, each group consisted of 35 students as control group and experimental group. The experimental group was taught by using Music Video meanwhile the control group was taught by lecturing method. The instrument for collecting data was writing test. In the calculation of Ttest, the mean of students’ score in experimental group was 7,02 and the mean of students’ score in control group was 3,22. Standard deviation of experimental group was 516,974, standard deviation of control group 242,174, and the total number of samples was 68, Tobserved is higher than Ttable. 5,093 > 1,994 at the level of significance 0,05 for two tailed. The finding is if hypothesis stated that there is significant effect of using Music Video as media learning on students’ writing achievement on writing Narrative text is accepted.

Abstract

This study is aimed to design English Reading Material needed for students of Software Engineering Program and develop English Reading Material for Grade XI students of Software Engineering Program in SMK Negeri Binaan Provinsi Sumatera Utara Medan. This research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; 1) Gathering Data and Information, 2) Analyzing data, 3) Designing new material, 4) Validated new material by the experts, 5) Revising reading material, 6) Final Project. The subject of this research was class XI-RPL 1 students of Software Engineering program consisting of 29 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After , anlyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing the questionnaire to 29 respondents to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which cointain English for Software Engineering program. Thus , developing English reading mateials were procedure text. Then , the procedure texts related to their study program. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,2 from English Lecturer and 4,3 from English Teacher.It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for Grade XI Students of  Software Engineering Program.

Abstract

This study concerns with improvement of students’ achievement in writing recount text through mind mapping technique in Junior High School. The subject of the study was the students in SMP Free Methodist 1 Medan, class VIII-1 which consisted of 37 students. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research. The procedure of this research was done in two cycles in six meeting. The mean of students’ score in test I was 67.24. It was increased in test II to 72.78 and in test III, it became 78.79. The improvement was not only showed in the mean of the students’ score but also in the number of students who got point up to 75. In test I, the number of students who got point up to 75 was only 5.4%. In test II, the number was increased to 29.8% while in test III it became 81.1%. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the students gave good responds in the teaching and learning process. Based on the result of quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that the application of mind mapping technique had improved the junior high school students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Mind Mapping, Junior High School

Abstract

This research aimed to finding out whether students’ achievement taught by usingAcrostic Technique has significant effect than that was taught by GroupInvestigation Method in Writing Descriptive Text. The research was conducted byExperimental research using two groups. They are Experimental groupthat usedAcrostic Technique and Control group that used Group Discussion Method. Thepopulation of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta KesumaBangsa Londut. There were three parallel classes which consist of 30 students foreach class. The data was taken from writing test. After analyzing the data, it wasfound that the value of tobserved was 4.511 with degree of freedom (df) 28 at thelevel of significance p (0.05) = 2.048. It means that tobserved (4.511) is higher thanttable (2.048). It was found that students’ achievement in Writing Descriptive Texttaught by Acrostic Technique has significant effect.

Abstract

This study was descriptive-qualitative approach using content analysis. The data used in this study were in the forms of texts in the textbook. Some steps were undertaken during the data collection: reading the texts carefully, understanding specific parts related to the research focus intensively, marking certain parts related to the research focus, making a description of the data and inserting the data into the table. The subjects were 10 texts in English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X. The objects were the 18 characters described by Kemendiknas. The results showed that there were two points of findings discussed in this research. First, related to the occurrence of characters, Hard work character was the most dominant character found in the texts with 8 data or 19.04%. It implied that the author wanted wants to raise the students’ effort of students to other human..Second, related to the techniques of integrating characters, there were two techniques found in the texts, namely explicit and implicit technique. The implicit technique was more dominant in the texts with 24 data or 57.15%. This result showed that the author seemed to pay attention to the cognitive and affective aspects of the students in which at their age, they have been able to think critically and to understand the implied meaning.Keywords: characters, techniques of integrating characters, texts

Abstract

This study focuses on improving students’ achievement in writing News Item text through Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the grade X students of SMA Mitra Inalum. Twenty four students were taken as the sample. The research was conducted in two cycles. First cycle was conducted in four meetings. The second cycle was conducted in two meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (writing test) and qualitative data (observation sheet, diary note, and questionnaire sheet). Based on the data analysis, students’ score kept improving in every test. The mean of the students’ score in the first competence test was 38.4, in the second competence test was 75.4 and in the third competence test was 81.9. The result showed that Cooperative Integrated and Reading Composition (CIRC) technique improved students’ achievement in writing news item text.

Abstract

This research is aimed to develop a good realia as a media, easy to be learnt, and can be used for teaching writing descriptive text. This study is developmental research uses Sugiyono’s model. The evaluator of the media are three experts. This instruments employed in this study is a questionnaire, interview, and Test (Pre-test and Post-test). The finding of the study is the quality of the developed realia media viewed from the experts is very good (87,2 %). The final product of this realia media is continued with effectiveness exam. The study takes place in MTs. Swasta Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah Tembung to the studens of VIII class, academic year 2016-2017. The samples are 40 students which is given a miniature of SIB monument and National monument as realia. Pre-test and Post-test were administrated to measure students’ ability in writing descriptive text before and after using realia. The scoring system was based on five aspects; they are content, organization, vocabulary, language use, mechanics. The result shows that there is an increase of students’ ability in writing descriptive text by using realia as a media. Therefore, the writer suggest to English teacher to develop realia as one of the alternative ways to increase the students’ descriptive text writing ability.
