Abstract

This study aims at finding out reading comprehension difficulties faced by the EFL students and the factors of the difficulties faced by thirty second graders of senior high school Banda Aceh. This research used mix method and the data were collected through test and interview. This research focused on five aspects in reading comprehension namely main idea, detail information, inference, reference, and vocabulary. The data collected were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative approach was used to obtain the data about the frequency of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension, while the qualitative approach was used to find out the factors why students face the difficulties. Based on the result from the test, the researcher found that the major difficulty students face in reading comprehension text is vocabulary (27%), followed by main idea (23%), inference and reference (18%), and detail information (14%). Moreover, the result from the interview with five students who got the lowest scores in the test and an English teacher who teaches the class indicates that the factors why the students face the difficulties are the absence of extensive reading, inadequate vocabulary, type of text, type of questions, the absence of the use of reading strategy, and the uncertainty of students’ reading levels. The findings suggest the English teacher measures the students’ reading levels properly, clearly teach the reading strategy, and apply an interesting strategy in teaching reading to motivate the students to read in English more.

The writer used 5% (a=0.05) as significant value.  The t-test result, i.e. tvalue (2.34) was higher than ttable  (1.73) suggesting that Ha is accepted. This finding shows that the implementation of Numbered Head Together Technique improved second grade junior high school students’ speaking ability (vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, comprehension, grammar) in terms to describing people, places or things orally. Abstract

The objective of this study is to figure out whether the use of picture series can improve students’ ability in narrative writing skill, especially on the content aspect of the third grade students at MTsN Rukoh Banda Aceh. Most of the third grade students at MTsN Rukoh Banda Aceh felt difficult to generate and develop their ideas in writing form. By this reason, the researcher conducted experimental-quantitative research with the pre-test and post-test control group design to the students by using picture series to help them improve their writing. The samples of this study were class XI–1 as the experimental class and class XI-5 as the control class, which were chosen by using random sampling. In this study, the data was collected by means of writing test, consisting of pre-test and post-test. The result of this study showed that the improvement of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class. It was known from the comparison of the improvement of their average score in both classes on the content aspect of writing that is 7.26 in the experimental class and 3.28 in the control class. Besides, the result of the hypothesis testing shows that the score is 0.000 which is lower than 0.05 (0.0000.05), which means the research hypothesis that “the use of picture series can improve the students’ ability in narrative writing skill especially on the content aspect” is accepted.

Tocreate question sentences, there is a technique that can be used by the students; this is called five fingers technique. Therefore, this research aims to find out whether five fingers technique can improve the students’ ability in making question sentences. This study used one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample of the study was class VIII-1 which consisted of 29 students. Random sampling technique was used by the writer to choose the sample. Based on the tests results, where the score of post-test was higher than the score of pre-test, it can be concluded that using five fingers technique which use the fingers as the tool to memorize the types of question sentences (wh-question, yes/no question, positive tag question, negative tag question, and assumption question) can improve the students’ ability in making question sentences. Therefore, it is recommended for the teachers to use five fingers technique in teaching question sentences.

Abstract

This study aims at examining whether or not the use of information gap technique can improve students’ performance in English speaking ability and helps teachers in teaching speaking. In order to cope the problems faced by the students in learning speaking, the experimental of pre-test and post-test design was undertaken. The instrument used to collect the data in this study was a set of test. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic formula. The result of the test was analyzed by using speaking criteria suggested by Brown (2001). From the result of the study it reveals that the result of post-test is higher than the result of pre-test after the information gap technique was applied. It shows that the implementation of information gap can give a significant improvement to the students. It explicitly means that information gap can be one of alternative techniques used by teacher in teaching English particularly in teaching speaking in junior high schools.
