Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the students’ ability in using the language feature in writing descriptive text. This research was designed as quantitative research and it was conducted at SMPN 4 Banda Aceh is located at Peunayong on April 25th 2019. The number of sample in this research was 20 students which were taken from the seven grade students. In this research, the researcher used writing test as the instrument of the research where the students were asked to write the language features in a descriptive text based on the picture given to them. In this research, the researcher analyzed two components of descriptive text written by the students such as grammar and vocabulary. To measure students’ ability, the researcher showed the result that in the grammar analysis of writing, 20% of the students score 22-25, 60% score 19-21, and 20% score 11-17. In the result vocabulary analysis 75% score 18-20 and 25% score 14-17. The result level categories of vocabulary 75% level excellent. 25% level good. And the result level categories of grammar 20% level excellent, 60% level good the last 20% level fair. From the result it means their ability in using the language features in writing descriptive text can be categorized in the good level.

Abstract

In using the language, people have a variety of style, one of them is code mixing. Indonesian-English code mixing often uses by teenagers because of influence of popular movie like Cek Toko Sebelah that contain code mixing. The teenagers who watched this movie may be exposed to every aspect presented in the movie, including language use along with code-mixing phenomenon in it. Thus, it is significant to investigate the use of code mixing in this movie. The aim of this study is to find out the types of code mixing that are used in Cek Toko Sebelah movie and also to figure out the type of code mixing that is most frequently used in Cek Toko Sebelah movie. This study used qualitative method. In collecting the data, the writer used observation sheet and classified the data into 3 types of code mixing based on Muysken’s (2000) theory. The result of this study showed that 32 data or (63%) are categorized as insertion, 19 data or (37%) are categorized as alternation and no data of congruent lexicalization. The most frequently used type of code mixing in Cek Toko Sebelah movie was insertion.

Abstract

Students who enroll in the English Department are taught by the lecturers by using English. Therefore, the skill of listening is the main and the most important aspect needed to figure out teacher’s meaning. Relating to students listening comprehension, they encountered some difficulties. Thus, the aim of this study is to find out what factors affect students’ listening comprehension in the English Department of Syiah Kuala University. This study was conducted at English Department of Teacher Training and Education faculty of Syiah Kuala University. 20 Seventh semester students of English Department were selected as sample of this study. The method of this study was a quantitative descriptive study. The writer used a questionnaire which consist of 43 questions as an instrument of this study. The result of questionnaire become the main data of this study. The data was calculated by using statistical formula. The result of this study revealed that the most dominant factor affecting students’ listening comprehension skill was physical setting factor, 32%out of 100% followed by failure to concentrate factor (23%), content of Listening text factor (20%), Psychological characteristic factor (19%), speaker factor (14%), listener factor (10%), and linguistics feature (9%) lastly. Therefore, it is recommended for head office of English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Syiah Kuala University to upgrade the equipment used to conduct listening activity.

Abstract

This research is analyzing of illocutionary acts performed by the main character Azzam in the novel Ketika Cinta Bertasbih. It is an Islamic novel. This research applied Searle’s theory and his 5 classifications, which are assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. This research used a qualitative method. Based on the findings of this research all of the types of illocutionary acts were found in this novel. The most common type found in this novel is directives. The reason is that Azzam, the main character, is described as someone who is hardworking, honest, and firm. These characteristics earn him respect from people around him and this gives him more opportunity to speak in a directive way. Therefore, ini this novel Azzam used a lot of directive type. The findings also showed that the types of illocutionary acts used by the main character in this novel are different from those used by the main character in fiction novels in earlies studies.

Abstract

Figurative language has important role in literature. Figurative language makes the literature works more interesting to read and it has certain deep meaning. Two fiction novels entitled “The Three Musketeers” written by Alexandre Dumas and “Assassin’s Creed Unity” written by Oliver Bowden were chosen as research data. The aims of this research are to analyze Metaphor found in the four chapters of the novels and the implied meaning of Metaphor found in it. In analyzing the data, the researcher used content analysis proposed by Kuhatna (2006) stated that content data analysis is a symbolic meaning. The research shows that there were 71 metaphor expressions found in two teenager’s fiction novels, such as: Active Metaphor (17 expressions), Ontological Metaphor (21 expressions), Complex Metaphor (17 expressions), Conceptual Metaphor (11 expressions) and Dead Metaphor (5 expressions). Those 71 Metaphor types are then categorized as types of Metaphor proposed by  Lakoff  and  Johnson  (2003)  and  Richards  (2009).  The  results  of  these  Metaphor expressions enhanced the deep meaning in the sentences in the novels mentioned above and make it more artistic.
