International Journal of Research on English Teaching and Applied Linguistics (IJRETAL) provides a forum for disseminating information and views which enables practitioners of and researchers in EAP to keep current with developments in their field and to contribute to its continued updating. IJRETAL publishes articles, book reviews, conference reports, and academic exchanges concerning the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and psycholinguistic description of English as it is used for the purposes of academic study and scholarly exchange. A wide range of linguistic, applied linguistic, and educational topics may be treated from the perspective of English for academic purposes; these include: -classroom language, -teaching methodology, -teacher education, -assessment of language, -needs analysis; -materials development and evaluation, -discourse analysis, -acquisition studies in EAP contexts, -research writing and speaking at all academic levels, -the socio-politics of English in academic uses and language planning.

Abstract

The main concern of this research was aimed at confirming the students’ individual readinghabit on academic text. It was navigated by online descriptive survey which involved 31students of English Education program. The data were collected through online questionnaireon WhatsApp Group Discussion by considering under the Covid19 situation and analyzed byusing SPSS. The result exposed (1) that the students have positive feeling on academic text,(2) most of the students read academic text at least once a week, (3) Academic book is themost types of academic text read by the students, (4) Busy with assignments becomes themain reason why the students not reading academic text. This research confirmed that thestudents have sufficient reading habit on academic text.

Abstract

In English teaching, teaching methods should be applied in the classroom for the successfulteaching activity. It is believed that the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is effective forteaching reading comprehension and motivating students. This study investigated the effect ofGTM on students’ reading comprehension and their reading motivation at SMAN 4 PalangkaRaya, Kalimantan Tengah. The study applied a quasi-experimental research design. To beresearch participants, 30 students of the natural science class were as an experiment group,and 30 students of the social science class were as a control group taken with a cluster randomsampling. Data were collected using the reading test and questionnaire. The collected datawere then analyzed using one-way ANOVA with SPSS 20. The results showed that GTM hasa significant effect on students reading comprehension and reading motivation. It was foundthat the degree of freedom between group (DFb) = 2, the degree of freedom within group(DFw) = 87 (Ttable = 1.99), and Fvalue was 37.019. It showed that Fvalue was higher than Ttable (37.019 1.99). It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected.

Abstract

This thesis presents research about “Analyzing the Students Speaking Anxiety by Using Psycho-social Approach” The sample consists of 10 students of  Al-hasib class at the second grade SMA Islam Athirah Bone. The objective of this research are (1) to analyze the reduction of the students’ speaking anxiety by using psycho-social approach. (2) to know the factors that cause students of SMA Islam Athirah Bone to get anxiety in Speaking. This research uses qualitative method by analyzing data using test, observation and interview.The result of the research shows that the students of the eleventh grade of Al-hasib class of SMA Islam Athirah Bone reduces anxiety in speaking  by using psycho-social approach. It supported by the existence of social interaction that are often carried out able to make students more confident and no longer anxious, Controlling the students’ emotional in studying situation, Relaxation  and motivation. They get more guidance from their English teachers such as being relax, preparing the preparation before studying or perform and positive thinking. The most dominant points are relaxation and motivation.The students have some factors in anxiety, they are lack of preparation, learners’ belief about language learning, fear of making mistakes and personal and interpersonal factors. The most dominant factors are lack of preparation and fear of making mistake.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the code-switching used by English teachers in teaching English at SMA Pesantren Putri Al-Manawwarah. There is one problem in this study, namely the types of code-switching used by the research subject in teaching and learning of English at SMA Pesantren Putri Al-Manawwarah. The researchers conduct descriptive-qualitative research. This study uses a qualitative approach because the data are spoken. Therefore, it is interesting to observe this phenomenon to find out the types. The data collection are; observation, recording, and note. The result of this study shows that the details of code-switching used by the teacher. In the English teaching and learning process within 2x45 minutes, there are 114 utterances in English teaching and learning process which are pronounced by the teacher. There are three types of code-switching (inter sentential code-switching, Intra sentential code-switching, and tag switching). According to the type, there are 59 utterances of code-switching. The number of inter sentential code-switching is 31 utterances (53%), Intra sentential code-switching is 14 utterances (24%), and tag switching is 14 utterances (24%).

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of personality in speaking performance. The focus was an analysis of the influence of the extrovert and introvert personality of the student toward speaking performance. This research employed a descriptive qualitative research method with a case study approach. The data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and speaking tests. The subject of this research was students at MA Baytul Mukarromah Welalange. There were 10 consisted of 5 extrovert and 5 introvert students that had been divided by using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire to acquire the data needed. The data analysis was employed based on the procedure of data analysis suggested by Miles and Huberman that consisted of step reduction, display, and verification data. The result of this data described that there was no influence between extrovert and introvert personality toward speaking performance, but it is influenced by different levels of knowledge and frequent participation or well preparation. It showed that personality types are not a determiner factor for the success of Speaking Performance, it can be suggested that students with different personality types may employ different kinds of strategies for learning. Consequently, whether extrovert or introvert as long as the student had enough knowledge about the topic and also was supported by frequent participation or well preparation, the speaking performance would be better.
