Abstract

Kinetic study of phosphor and nitrogen compounds through resuspension sediment has been carried out to determine their time release from sediment to the water column. This laboratory study was performed by stirring the sediment within the seawater at an equal current speed of 1 m/sec. Nutrients were observed at several intervals of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes and 40 minutes by sampling 25 ml water mixture with 3 time as replicates. The increase of nutrient occurred significantly during 5 minutes. Their average contribution of nutrient per gram sediment reached 1.827 μg phosphate, 0.292 mg ammonia, 0.276 mg ammonium, 1.776 μg nitrite and 9.059 μg nitrate. The extent of nutrient increase was probably depended upon characteristic of sediment (composition of nutrient availability) and resuspension speed.Keywords: kinetic, nutrient, resuspension, sediment, Jakarta Bay.

Abstract

The chlorophyll-specific absorption coefficient at 440 nm (a*ph(440)) of surface water in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico varied by a factor of 7 (0.02-0.15 m2 mg-1) with the of chlorophyll-a concentration of 0.06-12.25 mg m-3. In general, lower values of a*ph(440) (<0.06 m2 mg-1) were observed in the inshore particularly in the major river mouths. During summer, lower values of a*ph(440) were also observed offshore associated with low-salinity waters of the Mississippi River plume. Higher values of a*ph(440) (>0.1 m2 mg-1) were otherwise observed outside the river plumes in the outershelf and slope, where lower chlorophyll-a concentration occurred. Based on phytoplankton taxonomic groups, the average value of a*ph(440), of microphytoplankton group was significantly lower than that of nanophytoplankton and picophytoplantkon groups, suggesting that an increase in cell optical size (pigment packaging) resulted in decreasing a*ph(440) values. The relationship between a*ph(440) and chlorophyll-a concentration was also not linear, indicating pigment composition played an important role in determining a*ph(440) variability.Keywords: chlorophyll-specific absorption coefficient, microphytoplankton, nanophytoplankton,picophytoplankton, Gulf of Mexico, pigment, packaging effect

Abstract

Potential fishing ground mapping of skipjack and frigate tuna was determined based on sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration. The objectives of study were to analyze the temporal and spatial variability of SST and chlorophyll-a and it’s relationship on potential fishing ground. Chlorophyll-a concentration and SST were derived from Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors using SeaDAS image processing software. Catch data of skipjack and frigate tuna collected from Lampulo fishing base, Banda Aceh from January 2006 until November 2007. Linier regression was used to analysis relationship between catch perunit effort (CPUE) of fish and oceanographic parameters. The analysis of SST and chlorophyll-a concentration showed the temporal and spatial variations in northern part of Aceh seawaters. Both of Chlorophyll-a concentration and SST have positive relationship on CPUE of skipjack and frigate tuna.Keywords: Mapping, potential fishing ground, skipjack and frigate tuna, North Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Waters, chlorophyll-a, SST.

Abstract

A preliminary research programme was carried out in order to study the acoustic wave reflection or target strength (TS) of tuna fish using a quantitative echo sounder (QES). The relationships between TS to fork length (FL) and swimbladder volume, for bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and yellowfin tuna (T. albacares) are investigated. The TS of bigeye tuna was about 3 dB higher than yellowfin tuna when comparing species at the same size. The result can be correlated to the swimbladder volume differencebetween species. The relationship between TS and swimbladder volume was quantified for both species.Keywords: tuna fish, target strength, quantitative echo sounder

Abstract

Suatu model batimetri digital dapat dibangun melalui interpolasi sejumlah besar titik kedalaman hasil pemeruman. Studi ini menggunakan dua skenario pengolahan yaitu menggunakan keseluruhan data perum dan menggunakan data perum terpilih. Pada setiap skenario pengolahan data, ada tiga metode interpolasi yang dibandingkan yaitu metode inverse distance to power, kriging dan minimum curvature.Nilai RMSE yang didapatkan dari masing-masing interpolator pada setiap skenario tersebut ternyata cukup bervariasi. Secara umum metode Kriging lebih efektif digunakan untuk menghasilkan gambar kontur kedalaman perairan dibandingkan dengan metode lainnya. Hasil studi ini memperlihatkan perlunya penanganan data agar pola suatu unsur spasial (kontur kedalaman) dapat ditampilkan secara lebih baik.Kata Kunci: interpolasi, kriging, inverse distance to power, minimum curvature,batimetri

Abstract

A digital bathymetric model may be produced after sounding point interpolated by using specific methods. There are three common interpolation methods used recently: inverse distance to power, kriging and minimum curvature. This study applied two scenarios of data processing to compare those three methods on producing bathymetric contours. Numeric validation was performed on the three different gridding methods. The result of this study showed that kriging method was spatially more effective in interpolating water depth than that of the other two.Keywords: interpolation, kriging, inverse distance to power, minimum curvature, bathymetry

Abstract

The objective of this study was to explore the information on the microhabitat preference of asteroidea in Hari Island Waters, Southeast Sulawesi.  The specimens were collected in August 2012 and December 2012. The methods used in this study were road sampling technique, freehandpicking, and observation. The geographical coordinate position of the asteroidea and microhabitat were recorded by using GPS and then mapped by using the ArcGIS 10.1.  Asteroidea map was overlayed with microhabitat map to determine the microhabitat preference. The study found 9 species of asteroidea belonging to 7 generas, 4 families, and 2 orders. All the asteroidea were relatively common species in the tropical shallow waters. The species were distributed along sides of the island with majority found in the northern side. The dominant species, Linckia laevigata, was found in all microhabitat which had beed adapted to various microhabitat conditions and water fluctuation. Based on area of distribution and population density, seastar tended to use reef coral as its microhabitat preference since reef coral could serve as a food source and habitat protection. Abstract

Weda Bay located  at Halmahera Island, North Maluku was rich in fishes, sea cucumbers, crabs, shrimp, and alge resources. Research on diversity and density of echinoderms at Weda Bay, North Maluku was limited and therefore it was lack on data and information of the biota. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity and density of echinoderms at Weda Bay, North Maluku. This research was conducted in March 2013 including transects and free collection of 6 stations contained echinoderms. The results showed that the overall echinoderms were found 23 species of 17 generas, 12 families, 10 orders, and 5 classes. Based on classes, the highest density of echinoderms was Asteroidea of 0.0456 ind/m2 (43.76 %) foundin the seagrass sand  habitat.  Meanwhile,  the  lowest  density was  Crinoidea  of 0.0002 ind/m2 (0.19%) found in corals habitats. Abstract

The occurrence of sea cucumber, Holothuria atra, was assessed in the seagrass area of the Bama beach, Baluran National Park in East Java. The study investigated the frequency and early stages of seagrass association preference of H. atra. Survey was conducted in May 2011 using belt transect (1m x 100m with three replicates). Frequency of H. atra and their association with seagrass were recorded. Furthermore, length and wet weight of each individual of H. atra were measured. The total of 146 individuals of H. atra were observed in which 37.67% associated with Enhalus acoroides (EA), 23.29% associated with Cymodocea rotundata (CR), 23,29% associated with mixed seagrass species of E. acoroides and C. rotundata, and 15.75% associated with no seagrass habitats. The results suggested that small size H. atra might prefer to live under the taller seagrass stands such E. acoroides, which could be morphologically benefits the H. atra by providing better protection and shelter area. Abstract

In fish grouper escpecially humpback grouper culture, seed and broodstock quality and availability determine the production success. Main supply of wild broodstock still dominates grouper hatchery activities, therefore, the exploitation of the wild broodstock is very high. Efforts to use the supply of cultured broodstock through selection and breeding processes will greatly determine their culture success. The purpose of this experiment was to get seeds from the cross breeding between F-2 and F-0. The research used two (2) concrete tanks with volume of 75 m3 each. Each tank was filled with 20  fishes consisting of 10 fishes of F-2 and 10 fishes of F-0. The experiment was conducted the Institute of Mariculture Research and Development, Gondol, Bali. The result showed a good gonadal development and natural spawning of cross breeding between F-2 and F-0. Total number of eggs (1.320.000) was found the highest in May in tank A, while the highest fertilized eggs of 385.000 were found in June.  The SSCP analyses showed no difference in genetic characters of broodstock from cross-breeding between the female parent F-2 and F-0 male parent.
