The data of this research were collected online with 50 participants from one of senior high school in Gresik. This research found that the students’ mostly experienced communication apprehension (M = 3.4) and fear of negative evaluation (M = 3.4) rather than test anxiety (M = 3.1). This research also showed that foreign language anxiety has significant negative correlation with students’ speaking performance (p = 0.000, r = -0.98) and the correlation strength was categorized as very strong. The higher level of students’ foreign language anxiety, the worse their speaking performance. Keywords: foreign language anxiety, speaking, speaking performance.

Abstract

Abstract This case study was about the use of Zoom Cloud Meeting for teaching English grammar in an online class. Zoom was the most popular online platform that had many users for a virtual meeting in many countries. However, an English teacher was rarely using Zoom for teaching English in a Senior High School in Gresik. Even though the school suggested that this platform was one of the online platforms for teaching such as Zoom, Google Meet, Google Classroom, and WhatsApp, they preferred to use Google Classroom than Zoom. Therefore, the researcher chose the English teacher who used Zoom and the students who learned grammar materials with the topic “Passive Voice” including “Simple Tense, Continuous Tense, Perfect Tense, and Perfect Continuous Tense” because grammar was the hardest material if it was not taught synchronously. The aim of this study was to describe the use of Zoom for teaching Grammar in an online class including implementation, teachers’ obstacles, and the solutions. The researcher conducted participant observation and semi-structured interview which were online and offline to obtain the data. The result of the observation showed that both the implementation of using Zoom was not successful enough because of bad connection. Meanwhile, the result of the interview showed that the teacher thought that Zoom was useful for teaching grammar even though both teacher and students got the obstacles from media and devices, internet access and network, and facilities. Thefore, teacher solved them by using another platform that has same function. Keywords: Zoom Cloud Meeting, Teaching Grammar, Obstacles, Online Class.

Abstract

Short Structured Summary is one of the learning strategies which aims to assist students in improving their writing competence. In addition, the use of this strategy indirectly helps students in understanding the text. In implementing this strategy, classes were conducted virtually with three intensity meetings. The material taught to students was narrative text material. After the Short Structured Summary using the 5W1H approach was implemented, the researcher then analyzed the students' writing skills through the assignments given by the teacher and the results of interviews with five student representatives. This research was designed as qualitative descriptive research in which data was obtained through the observation process. Field notes were also carried out to collect all information related to teachers' and students' teaching and learning processes. Based on field notes, the teacher has gone through the teaching stages well, from opening to closing in each meeting. Through virtual meetings, the teacher approached students by introducing narrative text first, then explained and implemented the Short Structured Summary strategy using 5W1H at the next meeting. The results of this strategy's implementation, students were assigned to write a short structured summary to be assessed using an assessment rubric that the researcher has set. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with five student representatives to complement the data obtained. This study found that the teacher has implemented the Short Structured Summary using the 5W1H strategy to improve students' writing competence.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of the essential things in learning English at schools. In practice, reading is not easy for students to understand because of the complexity of the text and the lack of interest in the reading text. The purposes of this study are the implementation of extensive reading through LINE Webtoon to enhance students' reading comprehension and how students respond to its implementation. The descriptive-qualitative approach was carried out by observing the process of teaching and learning English activities carried out by the English teacher in an online class attended by 36 high school students and interviews with seven selected students in the class. The observation activity aims to observe the implementation of extensive reading using LINE Webtoon to enhance reading comprehension in a narrative story. In contrast, the interview activity aims to describe students' responses to the implementation. The data were obtained by using three instruments: (1) observation using check-list and field note in worksheets during two meetings; (2) questionnaire to select the students to be interviewed and; (3) interview. The results showed that the implementation of extensive reading using LINE Webtoon could enhance students' understanding of a narrative story. Students agreed that reading text with pictures makes it easier for them to understand the story’s context, even when they encounter unfamiliar words. Future researchers can develop further studies for other types of reading text as well as for listening, writing, and speaking skills.

Furthermore, the needs analysis results showed that the basic competencies developed are on procedure text and offering and responding services. Moreover, the material that must be included is the theme according to the Culinary major. This stage becomes the design stage in the Four-D model. Finally, the results of the assessment of the materials that have been developed showed that they had a good quality by meeting the aspects of effectiveness, practicality, and readability. Abstract

Speaking ability is a productive ability in language to deliver meaning using verbal expression. Speaking ability is an essential skill and becomes one indicator of how far students know the target language. In teaching speaking, special treatment and methods are needed, which are different from teaching other skills. In this research, the researcher proves that the online game "Among Us" can be one of the learning media to help students practice their speaking ability. The method used in this research was qualitative research with a profound observation of teaching-learning activity in one of the senior high schools in Surabaya. From the observation field note from three meetings, it was found out that the teacher applied pre-teaching, whilst teaching, and post-teaching activity. The implementation of "Among Us" occurred on whilst teaching activities at the first and second meetings. The material used in this research was asking and giving information about condition, action, and activity in the past. The result found that asking and giving information about condition and activity employed the most by the students while asking and giving information about the action in the past was rarely employed. The result of student's speaking performance on the third meeting was evaluated using the speaking performance rubric. Most of the students notably achieved the target, and only a few sufficiently achieved the target. Several students performed outstandingly. From the findings, the researcher concludes that "Among Us" can be applied as independent learning media to assist students' speaking ability in asking and giving information about condition, action, and activity in the past.

Abstract

Abstract In this study, the researcher is interested in knowing how the teacher uses the audio recording strategy to help students with their speaking skills. Students can use the audio recording to analyze their speaking skills and explore how to speak fluently with their classmates. Since the audio recording contains pauses and repetitions, students are better prepared to say confidently. As a result, it would encourage students to use English more often. The data was gathered through observation and communicating rubric performance. The results found that the teachers used the audio recording to assist their speaking activities. The researcher hopes that implementing this strategy will help the students with their speaking abilities. Keywords: Speaking skills, learning media, audio recording.
