Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the problems experienced by English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk in carrying out online classes. This study uses a qualitative research method in which the researcher describes the data from the research. The data in this study were obtained by in-depth interviews on the research subject, which involved four English teachers who conducted online classes at the school. The results of this study indicate three problems, supported by previous research including the problems of Tools, Credit, and Motivation. and it can be concluded that it turns out that the Tools and Credit problems, especially in SMA Negeri 1 Luwuk only a few percent are left because almost all of the students have complete facilities or at least the students already have cellphones that support online learning. Then what is still a crucial problem during online classes is student motivation which sometimes goes up and down. Despite having complete facilities, students are sometimes too lazy to participate in online learning.

Abstract

This research aims to identify and described the application of media used by teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Luwuk in teaching. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research used two instruments to obtain data, namely observation and interviews. The subjects of this research were teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Luwuk. Based on the results, the researcher found the type of media used by teachers in teaching, namely: computer or Laptop, internet, modules, pictures, power points, audio, Zoom and WhatsApp. The description of the application of the Teaching media is: based on the result of observations and interviews, the researcher draws the conclusion that the application of all media used by teachers for online learning is continuous and interconnected between one media and another so that the online learning process runs smoothly.

Abstract

This research purposes to find out what type of words mistake made by the students and the causes of mistake made by the students in skripsi examination especially in English Education Study Program. This research is a qualitative research by using documentation and interview as intruments. The researcher used audio recording in documentation to record the students' proposal seminar performance and the researcher asked some questions in interview by using the audio recording to record the students' answers. The researcher selected 6 students in a class as a sample. This data collection involved 6 students of English Education Study Program who finished their skripsi examination. The result of this research indicate that the common mistake are made by the students during skripsi examination such us hard to apply grammar rule, limited number of vocabulary, and not perfect in pronounciation and intonation. Also, the result of this research indicate the causes of students mistake during skripsi examination namely communication apprehension, test anxiety, lecturer’s characteristic, and psychological factors.

Abstract

The main issue of this study is to describe and identify the students’ low abilities in the Listening Comprehension skill. Authentic materials used in this research are adopted to the syllabus for the students of class ten of senior high school. These materials are in narrative, descriptive and news items. This study used CAR (classroom action research) design by using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The total numbers of the subject were 38 students. There were only one cycle in this study, the cycle consisted of four activities, namely (1) planning, (2) implementation of the action, (3) observation and (4) reflection. The data collected in this study were derived from observation, questionnaires and field notes. The quantitative data were obtained from the test through post test at the end of the cycle. The results showed that the classical achievement of the students 78.94% and had exceeded the criteria of success which was 75%. The purpose of this study is to help English teachers and students improve the knowledge of the listening comprehension skills.

Abstract

This research emphasized the problems of speaking ability in English among students of English Education Study Program in Muhammadiyah Luwuk University. This type of research was descriptive qualitative. In this research, the researcher used interview as instrument to find out the problems faced by the students in speaking English. From the results of the research, the researcher found the main problems faced by the students were limitations on vocabulary, errors in pronunciation, and incorrect grammar. In addition, the students also got anxiety when they speak in English and they embarrassed when they speak incorrectly, and they are still affected by their native language until they have problems in speaking English.Keywords: Speaking; Speaking Problems.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analysis what kinds error in perfect tense made by student in English education study program and to find out the cause of error made by students at English education study program in Muhammadiyah Luwuk University. The method of this research is qualitative-descriptive. This research used two instruments, the first instrument is test and the second instrument is interview. This research used data analysis technique by Miles and Huberman stated that data analysis technique into three parts, those are data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The research subject is students in English education study program that already programed the general English structure. The result of the test found four types of error. Those are addition, omission, substitution and miss ordering. And the result of the interview found four causes of error. Those are interlingua transfer, intralingua transfer, context of learning and communication. The highest error is substitution with 110 error. and the most cause of error that happened in students English education study program is intralingua transfer.

Abstract

This Research was aimed to prove that the use of recorded dialogues in teaching listening can improve the listening comprehension of the second year students of SMU Negeri I Marawola. This research applied true experimental research design involving two sample groups; experimental and control groups. The sample of this research was 62 second year students of SMU Negeri I Marawola selected with a random sampling technique. The instrument of data collection was a test which was given to the research sample as pretest and posttest. The data gathered were analyzed statistically. The result of the data shows that the t- counted (2.03) was greater than the value of t- table (1.671) by applying 0.05 level of significance and the degree of freedom (df) was 60. It meant that the use of recorded dialogue can significantly improve the listening comprehension of the second year students of SMU Negeri I Marawola. In brief, recorded dialogues were effective to be used to improve listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to find the difficulties faced by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary at SMP Negeri 1 Luwuk. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research used an instrument to obtain data. The subjects of this study were the teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Luwuk.The data was collected through voice recording and then describe the data to find out the difficulties faced by the English teacher. Based on the results of the interview, the research draws the conclusion that the difficulties in teaching vocabulary came from students and the lack of available school facilities. Do not rule out the possibility of the teacher being a problem for themselves. The lack of response from the school about the development of facilities and student interest in teaching English was not only a problem for the teachers but also a challenge so that efforts to improve teaching techniques and methods become one of the solution and alternative that can be continued especially in teaching vocabulary so that the learning process can runs smoothly.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the influence of teacher’s teaching skills toward students’ achievement in English subject in class IXa of SMP Negeri 6 Luwuk. Data analysis methods in this research include descriptive statistics, data normality test and Pearson product moment test. The test results in this research found that the calculated r counted of 0.735 > r table 0.374, meaning that there was a significant influence between the teaching skills of teacher toward students achievement in English subject in class IXa SMPN 6 Luwuk. r counted of 0.735 or 73.5% indicates the level of a strong relationship between teacher’s teaching skills and students’ achievement. R square value showed that the influence of teacher’s teaching skills toward students’ achievement is 54.0% while 46.0% is influenced by other variables not included in this research. Therefore from the results of the data obtained that there is an influence between teacher’s teaching skills toward students’ achievement in English subject with the influence is 54.0% and a high level of strong relationship that is 73.5%.

Abstract

The objective this research is to determine whether the use of pictures can improve students of class VII at SMPN 2 Bunta. This research used a quasi-experimental study that required a posttest for both groups. The population of this research was the students of class VII at SMPN 2 Bunta. The sample of this research  were class VIIA as an experimental class consisting of 22 students and class VIIB as a control class consisting of 20 students. In collecting data, the researcher used test. The test consisted of pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed statistically. After being analyzed, it was found that the result of the t-count was 2,45. With 40 degree of freedom, and a the significance level of 0,05, the t-table was 2,021.Therefore, the result of t-count is higher than t-table. The results showed that there was an increase, although not significant towards the use of pictures in improving students’ reading comprehension of class VII at SMPN 2 Bunta. It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
