Abstract

Information on land cover and land use plays an important role in biophysical regional analysis, spatial planning, resource management, and the formulation of sustainable development policies. To support these needs, accurate remote sensing image classification is crucial. The Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach is considered superior to pixel-based classification, as it provides higher accuracy and minimizes the salt-and-pepper effect. The success of object-based classification is influenced by the segmentation method employed. In this study, two segmentation approaches, namely Original Multiresolution Segmentation (OMN) and Region Grow on Object (RGO), were examined based on combinations of segmentation parameters and evaluated for accuracy using the Random Forest (RF) classification algorithm. The segmentation results indicate that the OMN approach produces smaller and more detailed objects, though they tend to be fragmented, whereas the RGO approach generates larger and more generalized objects with greater spatial stability. Based on object-based classification using RGO segmentation with a scale parameter of 0.5, seven land cover and land use classes were identified, with three dominant categories: plantations (50,393 ha), bare land (29,658 ha), and rice fields (27,092 ha). The classification accuracy of RGO was consistently higher than OMN across all parameter configurations, with the rice field class showing close alignment with official BPS data from 2024, which recorded an area of 30,038 ha. These findings demonstrate that the RGO approach is more effective in producing representative segmentation and classification for land use mapping.

Abstract

The residues of palm oil production and understorey biomass have potential to be used as ameliorants to release soil accumulated P from prolonged intensive inorganic fertilization and increase potassium (K) availability. However, low-quality OM that is widely available in the field has high C:N ratio and contains recalcitrant materials, making it difficult to decompose and reduce nutrient availability. Humic substances (HS) which are believed to increase nutrient availability were chosen as additional material to enhance the amelioration benefits of OM. Two complete randomized design laboratory incubation (60 days, at room temperature, and 60±10% field capacity) with three factors: Soil (P accumulated/ oil palm soil, forest soil); OM (without OM, ferns, empty fruit bunches/ EFB, fronds); HS (without HS, with HS), and with the addition of inorganic fertilizer as basic fertilizer was done to observe the effect of those combination on soil respiration and soil readily available P and K. The results showed that soil respiration rate were higher in soil with OM and HS addition compared to un-ameliorated soil. The general trend of soil respiration from rapid to slow was in order of ferns, EFB, and fronds. A combination of OM and HS causes the release of insoluble P in oil palm soil. Immobilization occurs in the initial incubation period, but after day 7, readily available P increased, indicating that OM and HS affect positively on available P. Meanwhile, readily available K increased immediately after OM and HS addition and did not show any immobilization process. OM with HS treatment shows lower available K compared to OM without HS addition, however, the values is still much higher than control, means K mineralization from added OM still occur.

Abstract

Abstract

A landslide is a natural event characterised by the significant downslope movement of rock and soil masses. This corresponds to the recent landslide that occurred in Bastem, which also resulted in casualties. This study aims to analyse soil and vegetation characteristics in the landslide-affected area of Bonglo Village, Bastem Utara District, Luwu Regency. The research applied a purposive sampling method across nine plots (three in landslide areas and six in vegetated areas). Soil samples were analysed for texture, permeability, bulk density, plasticity, organic matter, and pH, while vegetation was assessed using the Importance Value Index (IVI). Results revealed variations in soil texture, namely sandy loam, loamy sand, clay loam, and sandy clay loam. Permeability was highest in P2 (165.3 cm/hr) and P3 (78.6 cm/hr), and lowest in P5 (0.6 cm/hr). Bulk density ranged from 1.03 g/cm³ (P4) to 1.75 g/cm³ (P2). Soil plasticity varied from highly plastic to slightly plastic. The highest organic matter content was found in P2 (2.06 g/cm³). Soil pH was extremely acidic in P1–P6 (pH 2–3), whereas DA (upper soil), DB (lower soil), and DT (middle soil) were near neutral (pH 6.2–6.8). Vegetation was dominated by Pinus at the tree level (IVI 67.97%) and ferns at the seedling level (IVI 32.44%). These findings emphasise the role of soil physical properties and vegetation in slope stability and highlight the importance of bio-physical-based mitigation strategies in landslide-prone areas.

Abstract

Land use/land cover (LULC) information is essential for environmental analysis, yet its accuracy depends on segmentation or classification methods. This study aims to analyze differences in segmentation results and classification accuracy using Original Multiresolution (OMN) and Region Grow on Object (RGO) integrated with the K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) method in Sumedang Regency. An Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach was applied with variations in scale, shape, and compactness, and accuracy was assessed using Overall Accuracy (OA), User’s Accuracy (UA), and Producer’s Accuracy (PA). The results show that OMN is sensitive to the scale parameter and tends to produce over-segmentation, while RGO generates larger, more homogeneous, and more stable objects. RGO-based classification achieved more consistent performance with slightly higher then OA, particularly for homogeneous classes such as forest and water bodies. In contrast, OMN captures finer spatial details but is prone to fragmentation. Therefore, RGO with moderate parameters (scale 0.5; shape 0.1 and compactness 0.4) is considered the optimal configuration. However, uncertainties remain in spectrally similar classes, suggesting the need for more adaptive classification methods or higher-resolution data in future studies.

Abstract

Intensive agricultural practices accompanied by continuous application of fertilizers and pesticides may alter soil nutrient balance and affect soil quality. This study aimed to evaluate the availability of essential micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn), Pb and Cd content in agricultural soils of Brebes Regency, Central Java. Soil samples were collected from 39 locations representing contrasting agroecological conditions in the northern and southern regions. Soil chemical properties were analyzed, while micronutrients, Pb, and Cd availability were determined using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extraction, and total Pb and Cd was measured by wet digestion using HNO3-HClO4. The results showed that essential micronutrients availability (Fe ranging from 63.7-152 ppm, Cu 6.62-10.6 ppm, Zn 2.12-3.39 ppm, and Mn 62.1-86.2 ppm) were generally in the sufficient category. The availability of Fe, Cu, and Zn in the northern region was significantly lower than in the southern region, while Mn did not differ significantly. Total Pb and Cd concentrations (ranged from 6.10-6.55 ppm and 0.21-0.44 ppm, respectively) in both regions were within normal threshold limits. However, Pb and Cd bioavailability was higher in the northern region (reaching 10.9% and 35.5%, respectively) compared to 5.07% and 30.5% in the southern region, with Cd showing greater bioavailability than Pb. These findings indicate that intensive land management affects micronutrient distribution and heavy metal behavior in soils. The results provide important information for soil quality evaluation and balanced nutrient management to support sustainable agricultural practices in Brebes Regency.
