Abstract

This paper examines the history of flooding in Tulungagung and its mitigation efforts from the colonial period to post-independence. Tulungagung is known as a flood-prone area due to an imbalance between river capacity and abundant water volume. The Dutch colonial government undertook the first mitigation effort through the Vlugter project, which only managed to overcome flooding for a short time. Subsequently, during the Japanese occupation, the Neyama Tunnel project was built using Rōmusha labor, although this resulted in loss of life. After independence, flooding returned with greater intensity, prompting the Indonesian government to implement a third phase of flood mitigation projects, including constructing the South Tulungagung Tunnel and a dam in the Brantas River Basin. In addition to natural factors, forest encroachment by local communities also exacerbated flooding from mountainous areas. These projects transformed flood-prone areas into fertile agricultural land and improved irrigation systems. Ultimately, this ecological and infrastructural transformation positively impacted regional economic growth, making Tulungagung a significant economic center. Keywords: economy, flood, mitigation, Tulungagung.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the travel novel Indonesia dari Pinggir by Fatris MF that tries to convey to the world the charm of people, culture, and regions in the Eastern part of Indonesia. However, at the same time, the author presents contradictory narratives, irony, negotiation, and efforts to accommodate the voice of the East to be in dialogue and even contrasted with the West. Therefore, the researcher conducted an academic exploration of the author's ambivalent position, simultaneously resisting and perpetuating the colonial discourse. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data in this research were taken from the novel Indonesia dari Pinggir by Fatris MF, consisting of words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and dialog between characters related to the research problem. Using Carl Thompson's concept of travel writing, the researcher found that the strategies of reporting the world and representing the other in this novel reveal the eastern Indonesian people who are often described as "the other" through exotic, primitive, and inferior. A narrative of revealing the self emphasizes the author's personal experience as a critical analysis in revealing the dynamics of the representation of eastern Indonesia in travel narratives. Keywords: colonial discourse, contradictory relation, deviation strategy, Indonesia dari Pinggir, travel literature

Abstract

Small talk is commonly understood as a form of phatic communication that maintains social relationships rather than conveying essential information. This study re-examines its role in generating humor, showing how it fosters closeness among characters and refreshes conversational dynamics. Drawing on the concept of phatic communion and supporting theoretical perspectives, the research analyzes verbal and nonverbal elements in everyday interactions within The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020). The findings indicate that gestures and small talk contribute to humor in spontaneous exchanges while reinforcing social bonds. Moreover, the study highlights how exaggerated body movements and explicit verbal expressions serve as mechanisms for building social closeness and producing humor in the film. Future research could expand this study by comparing the use of small talk in other animated series or in real-life interactions. This would provide a broader understanding of how humor functions in everyday communication.

Abstract

This study examines morphological formations that fill syntactic structures and influence contextual meaning, making them essential in constructing educational messages in public service advertisements (PSAs). It aims to describe these formations and identify their patterns in shaping educational meaning. The study is grounded in a morphosyntactic-contextual framework focusing on educational meaning. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using documentation for data collection and the distributional method for analysis. The data consist of grammatical structures in PSAs published by the Traffic Police Unit (Satlantas) of Bangkalan Resort Police. The findings reveal two main points. First, morphological formations in PSAs are produced through affixation (prefixes, confixes, and suffixes) and function syntactically as Subject (S), Predicate (P), and Adverbial (Adv.), forming the core grammatical structure. These forms represent subject states, actions, targets, and contextual conditions. Second, educational meaning patterns emerge through affixation: (1) forms with me(N)-, di-, ber-, and me(N)-i express motivation, awareness, and positive habits; (2) suffixes -kan and -i convey persuasive or imperative meanings; and (3) ke-an constructions reflect self-awareness. Thus, this study enriches micro-linguistic analysis, enhances insights into morphology and syntax, and provides a basis for linking micro-linguistic analysis with broader contextual elements.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the criticizing speech act strategies employed by beauty vloggers in makeup product reviews on social media. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative method with a sociopragmatic approach. The data consist of utterances containing criticizing speech acts produced by beauty vloggers in makeup review videos uploaded on YouTube and TikTok. The data sources were obtained from the channels of Affi Assegaf, Suhay Salim, Fatya Biya, Lifni Sanders, and Kiara Leswara, as well as the TikTok accounts of Reizuka Ari and Jovi Adhiguna. Data were collected by downloading the videos, transcribing the utterances orthographically, and classifying them based on Nguyen’s criticizing speech act strategies and Blum-Kulka’s speech act components. The findings reveal that beauty vloggers employ two major criticizing strategies, namely direct and indirect criticism. Direct criticism is expressed through explicit negative evaluations of product features, while indirect criticism is conveyed through mitigated expressions such as comparisons, suggestions, or compliments used as balancing devices. Furthermore, the criticism sequences demonstrate a recurring pattern consisting of pre-criticizing, main criticizing, and post-criticizing stages, which function to maintain politeness and interpersonal rapport in social media communication. These findings indicate that beauty vloggers strategically balance evaluative judgments and politeness considerations when delivering criticism to their audiences.
