Abstract

The increasing volume of household plastic waste in urban areas has become an increasingly complex environmental problem due to the low level of public awareness in managing plastic waste in daily life. In response to this issue, environmental campaigns through social media, such as Aqua’s #BijakBerplastik campaigns on Instagram, have emerged as an effort to raise public awareness of plastic waste reduction, particularly among mothers who play an important role in managing household consumption. Based on this context, this study aims to understand the perceptions and content preferences of Generation Y mothers in the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek) toward Aqua’s #BijakBerplastik campaign on Instagram, as well as how they interpret the campaign messages in their daily lives. To achieve this objective, this study employed a qualitative descriptive method using in-depth interviews with four Generation Y mothers who have different educational backgrounds, occupations, and social media usage habits. The findings indicate that the campaign was positively received because it was considered relevant to mothers’ roles in managing household needs and plastic waste. Positive perceptions were reinforced by the informants’ personal experiences related to environmental conditions in their residential areas, which are vulnerable to waste and flooding issues. Campaign exposure occurred organically through Instagram’s algorithm, while content preferences were influenced by visual appeal, narrative flow, and clarity of technical information. The campaign was perceived as effective when it presented practical and applicable examples of real actions in daily life.

Abstract

Public officials' social media crisis communication often fails to defuse public anger, particularly in crises touching on gender equality, as seen in the viral Sundanese song "Lalaki Langit, Lalanang Bejat" by the Regent of Purwakarta, Saepul Bahri Binzein, which drew national controversy for being seen as demeaning to women. This study analyzes the crisis response strategy the Regent took through his official apology video and maps how netizens received it, extending Situational Crisis Communication Theory with a digital audience reception perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a single case study design, the study gathered primary data through screenshots of the comment section under the official apology video on Instagram @omzein_bupatiaing (7,082 likes, 2,820 comments), after a filtering process, this yielded 30 unique comment units selected purposively based on the highest levels of engagement, which were then analyzed using Situational Crisis Communication Theory to map the crisis response strategy and Stuart Hall's reception theory to map netizen reception. The findings show the Regent's response fell into a diminishment cluster built on a conditional apology and the ‘written before taking office’ defense, which rested on a claim about the timing of authorship prior to holding public office. Of the 30 coded comments, 70% took an oppositional stance, drawing far greater resonance than negotiated or dominant readings, alongside allegations of buzzer activity and the deletion of critical comments that risked deepening the trust crisis. The study concludes that the diminishment strategy and conditional apology model failed to defuse public anger in this morally charged crisis

Abstract

Digitalization has caused a shift in the media landscape, which has also presented challenges for local journalism in Indonesia, particularly in peripheral areas like East Nusa Tenggara. Amid declining print media circulation and the increasing dominance of online media, local journalism faces challenges in maintaining its professional identity and social values in the digital public sphere. This study aims to understand how journalists in Harian Pagi Pos Kupang interpret the changes in their professional roles in the era of media convergence, and how these experiences shape new awareness in local journalism practices. This study uses a phenomenological approach (Moustakas, 1994) and involves six active reporters as participants. After data was collected thru in-depth interviews, editorial observations, and digital artifact analysis, it was followed by Braun & Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis to identify significant meanings from the participants' experiences. The research findings revealed five main themes: (1) the transformation of journalists' professional identity from news writers to meaning creators; (2) the negotiation of digital ethics between speed and truth; (3) technological adaptation amidst infrastructure limitations; (4) local-global tensions in maintaining regional journalism identity; and (5) journalists' moral resilience as social responsibility. Overall, local journalism in NTT has not only survived amidst digital disruption but has also created a new media ecology based on moral values, community solidarity, and regional journalistic ethics.

Abstract

The digital entertainment industry has experienced rapid growth alongside the increasing use of internet-based Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms. As a global streaming platform with a subscription-based business model, Netflix relies heavily on customer loyalty to sustain the continuity of its services. One of the strategies implemented by Netflix is the content production of Netflix Originals, one of which is the series Squid Game. Although previous studies have examined customer loyalty in streaming services, research that specifically highlights content quality as a factor influencing customer loyalty remains limited, particularly in the context of a single title with high audience expectations. This study aims to examine the effect of the content quality of the Netflix Original Squid Game Season 3 on customer loyalty with customer satisfaction as an intervening variable based on Expectation–Confirmation Theory (ECT) among Netflix subscribers in Pantai Indah Kapuk. This research employed a quantitative approach using purposive sampling techniques involving 332 respondents who were Netflix subscribers and had watched the series. Data were analyzed using path analysis to examine direct and indirect effects, as well as the Sobel test to examine the mediation effect among variables. The results show that Netflix Original Squid Game Season 3 content quality has a positive and significant effect on customer loyalty both directly and indirectly through customer satisfaction. These findings support Expectation–Confirmation Theory (ECT), which explains that perceived performance of a service influences the formation of customer satisfaction, which in turn encourages customer loyalty toward streaming services such as Netflix.

Abstract

Post-Concert Depression (PCD), the emotional emptiness and mood decline experienced after intense concert euphoria remains an underexplored phenomenon in communication research, particularly regarding how fans manage this condition through communicative strategies. This study aims to examine the effect of uncertainty reduction strategies on the emotional well-being of K-Pop fans following concert attendance, specifically in the context of overcoming Post-Concert Depression (PCD). This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative phases. In the quantitative phase, a survey was administered to 120 K-Pop fans who had attended at least one concert in 2024, selected using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS 28. In the qualitative phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with five informants drawn from the survey respondents to deepen the quantitative findings Emotional well-being was operationalized using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), measuring both positive and negative affect dimensions. The quantitative results reveal that uncertainty reduction (X) has a significant positive effect on emotional well-being (Y), explaining 49.5% of the variance (R² = 0.495; t = 10.761; p < 0.001). Interview findings corroborate these results, demonstrating that communication strategies, particularly active strategies such as peer interaction and information sharing, effectively alleviate PCD symptoms and enhance fans' post-concert emotional states. These findings contribute to the literature on the extended application of Uncertainty Reduction Theory beyond interpersonal contexts into the domain of popular culture and fan communication.

Abstract

The growing trend of retro scooters in Jakarta presents significant market opportunities; however, Scomadi Indonesia, a brand that promotes the concept of “modern classic scooters”, faces the challenge of low brand awareness amid the dominance of competitors such as Vespa. This study aims to analyze the integrated marketing communication (IMC) strategies implemented by Scomadi Indonesia and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in building brand awareness. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data analysis techniques follow the model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which includes data collection, data condensation, data presentation, as well as drawing conclusions and verification. The results of the study indicate that Scomadi Indonesia implements all five components of IMC, namely advertising (online and offline), sales promotion, face-to-face sales, direct marketing, and public relations. The Scomadi Owners Indonesia (SOI) community contributes 60% to marketing effectiveness. Key supporting factors include top management support, a family-like culture, and a strong unique selling proposition. No inhibiting factors were identified; rather, they are viewed as challenges, namely the public’s perception of high prices and the long-established dominance of the Vespa brand. Scomadi’s brand awareness is at the brand recall stage

Abstract

West Sumatra hosts 456 tourism villages rich in Minangkabau local wisdom, yet tourist visits remain highly concentrated in urban centers while most rural villages face significant marketing communication gaps. This study aims to critically and comparatively analyze the marketing communication gaps of local wisdom-based tourism villages in West Sumatra, positioning Desa Wisata Kubu Gadang as the success benchmark. Methodologically a qualitative comparative literature (documentary) study with an analytical-comparative multi-case design, this research examines six tourism villages (Kubu Gadang, Guranjhil, Nagari Sumpu, Marapalam, Apar, and Sarugo) through literature review of academic publications and public documents, analyzed using qualitative content analysis with cross-case synthesis. The findings identify six determinant factors for successful marketing communication: (1) the presence of change agents bridging tradition and innovation; (2) the ability to create viral content from local wisdom; (3) integration of tourism packages within coherent marketing narratives; (4) institutional diversification; (5) academic collaboration; and (6) adequate digital infrastructure. Kubu Gadang's 425% visitor increase and ADWI 2023 Advanced Village status indicate that creative commodification of local wisdom constitutes the most effective marketing communication strategy, with human agency and creative innovation proving more determinative than structural factors alone.
