Abstract

Nowadays, the development of the film industry in Indonesia is accelerating. The progress of the local/national film industry, in particular, is unstoppable, driven by technological advancements. For example, the emergence of YouTube as a platform has made it easier for film enthusiasts to enjoy film-related content. Film producers and marketers are increasingly motivated to compete in promoting and marketing their film content. In this context, audiences are becoming more inclined to watch film programs. However, amid the growing number of national film productions, there is one genre that remains relatively underproduced. The release of a children’s/teen musical film, first introduced through ‘Petualangan Sherina’, which competes with other film genres, can create uncertainty. The problems identified by the author stem from several factors such as content, the director, and the decision to watch a film. Thus, this article focuses on three variables: variable X1 (Review Content), variable X2 (Director Credibility), and variable Y (Viewing Decision), which will be further examined by the Social Judgment Theory. The purpose of this study is to determine the magnitude of the influence of all these variables. The research design employs a positivist paradigm, a quantitative approach, an explanatory nature, and a survey method. The results, based on correlation test data analysis, show a strong relationship between the “Review Content” variable and “Viewing Decision,” as well as a strong relationship between “Director Credibility” and “Viewing Decision.” Meanwhile, the multiple correlation test indicates that simultaneously, “Review Content” and “Director Credibility” have a moderately strong relationship with “Viewing Decision.” Furthermore, the F-test results reveal a positive and significant influence of both “Review Content” and “Director Credibility” on the “Viewing Decision.

Abstract

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is increasingly depicted in global cinema, yet its semiotic construction in film remains underexplored in academic discourse. This article aims to examine the semiotic construction of PTSD symptoms represented through the character of Janiyah in the film Straw (2025) and to reveal the social critique embedded in the film regarding mental health stigma. This study employs a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis consisting of three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. Data were collected through non-participatory observation of six key scenes presenting dialogues, facial expressions, gestures, and visual signs related to Janiyah's psychological condition, analyzed using the Miles and Huberman (2013) model. The findings show that Straw represents three major symptoms of PTSD: hyperarousal, avoidance, and re-experiencing. At the denotative level, the film depicts Janiyah as confused, defensive, emotionally unstable, and hallucinatory toward her deceased child. At the connotative level, these signs reveal unresolved grief, dissociation, social isolation, and an inability to accept reality. At the level of myth, the film criticizes the stigma surrounding mental health and the social construction that expects mothers to remain strong and resilient under any circumstances. Therefore, Straw functions not only as entertainment but also as a form of mass communication that represents psychological trauma and encourages public awareness of mental health.

Abstract

Social media reports and discussions about restrictions on 24-hour Warung Madura operations have prompted varied responses from business owners. This study uses the concepts of new media, User Generated Content (UGC), and media literacy to examine trends in reporting and social media use. The focus is on creative economy entrepreneurs, especially those operating Warung Madura businesses. The research uses a mixed-methods approach. It includes interviews and questionnaires distributed to 80 respondents from Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep in Madura Island. A key trend is business owners' strong reliance on their devices. This is supported by the finding that 57.50% of these entrepreneurs are from Generation Z. Their media use leans toward audiovisual content, with 66.25% favoring TikTok. Notably, 40% of Warung Madura owners spend over 5 hours daily on social media to gather information. This shows that these entrepreneurs are adapting to current times and technology. Media access helps information move more easily through all their business activities.

Abstract

The development of social media requires companies to implement more interactive marketing communication strategies; however, high digital exposure is not always followed by consumers’ purchasing decisions. This phenomenon can be observed in the local bag brand Mossdoom, which has high content exposure on social media, yet not all audiences necessarily make purchases. In addition, studies examining the simultaneous relationship between Marketing Public Relations, brand awareness, and purchasing decisions within the context of digitally based local fashion brands remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the influence of Marketing Public Relations on brand awareness and purchasing decisions for the local bag brand Mossdoom, while also examining the role of brand awareness as a mediating variable. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 140 female respondents aged at least 18 years old who are active on social media and have been exposed to Mossdoom’s content. Data analysis was conducted using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with the assistance of SmartPLS 4. The findings indicate that Marketing Public Relations has a positive and significant effect on brand awareness and purchasing decisions. Brand awareness also has a significant effect on purchasing decisions and is proven to partially mediate the relationship between Marketing Public Relations and purchasing decisions. Furthermore, the study found a direct influence of Marketing Public Relations on purchasing decisions, indicating a dual-path influence pattern in digital marketing communication.

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital media in Indonesia has created a complex challenge: while 77% of Indonesians actively consume online news, 42% still fall prey to hoax content (SAIL-CSIS, 2024). Despite the proliferation of regional digital news portals, there remains a research gap in understanding the operational strategies of local journalists on national platforms such as detikSumut in maintaining news quality amid the disruption of digital information. This study aims to identify and analyze the strategies employed by digital journalists at detikSumut in presenting online news on the detikcom platform. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews with five informants selected via purposive sampling (two digital journalists, one editorial assistant, and two public audience members), and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model comprising data reduction, display, and conclusion, validated through source triangulation. The findings reveal four key strategies: (1) proactive topic planning each evening through synchronization of national and local North Sumatera issues; (2) multi-layered verification with credible institutional sources using the 5W+1H framework; (3) application of the inverted pyramid writing model with straight-to-the-point leads; and (4) close editorial collaboration ensuring adherence to journalistic ethics. These strategies enable detikSumut to maintain speed, accuracy, and local relevance in the digital era.

Abstract

media platform X following the Day6 concert in Kuala Lumpur (January 2026) demonstrates that K-pop fandom conflict represents a clash between two cultural horizons that mutually interpret each other through pre-existing prejudices. This study aims to understand how prejudice, historical experience, and identity negotiation operate in cross-cultural dialogue within digital spaces. The approach used is qualitative, grounded in Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical framework, particularly the concepts of prejudice (Vorurteil), effective history (Wirkungsgeschichte), and fusion of horizons (Horizontverschmelzung). Data were collected through a literature review of hermeneutics and digital communication studies, tracing public discourse on social media platform X, and cross-national news coverage (Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore). The analytical technique employed is interpretive discourse analysis using close reading, source triangulation, and peer debriefing to ensure hermeneutic validity. The findings reveal three main results. First, prejudice and the economic hierarchy between East Asia and Southeast Asia operate as horizons that direct both parties' interpretations. Second, the fusion of horizons does not occur symmetrically between Knetz and SEAblings; instead, it produces a fusion of horizons among Southeast Asian netizens through the solidarity of the hashtag #SEAblings. Third, the digital space of X reinforces polarization while simultaneously providing an arena for the formation of a new regional identity as a form of hermeneutic resistance.

Abstract

This study departs from the problem that communication of the Free Nutritious Meal policy on government social media functions not only as the delivery of information, but also as a space for constructing reality, public trust, and social meaning. The objective of this study is to analyse whether the language used by the government in communicating the Free Nutritious Meal policy is capable of authentically disclosing the reality of the programme or instead moves toward gerede, namely communication that circulates widely but loses existential depth. This study employs a qualitative approach with an interpretive paradigm. Data were collected through documentation of government social media content, official statements, news reports, and public responses related to the Free Nutritious Meal policy. The analysis technique used was interpretive textual analysis based on Martin Heidegger’s perspective of truth and language through the categories of aletheia, facticity, gerede, house of being, and concealment. The findings show that the government frames the Free Nutritious Meal programme through strategic and future oriented language, such as portraying it as an investment in the nation’s future. However, the narrative has not been fully aligned with the lived experiences of the public. Public criticism, negative sentiment, food safety concerns, governance issues, and demands for transparency indicate a gap between official discourse and implementation realities. Consequently, the language of the policy has not fully achieved aletheia because it has not been able to disclose the programme’s reality honestly and meaningfully. Instead, the communication tends to move toward gerede when formal messages circulate widely without adequately addressing public experience.

Abstract

Violence does not always manifest in physical forms; it can also occur symbolically through subtle forms of domination embedded in language, gestures, and visual representations that normalize gender inequality. The representation of women in media, particularly in film, has the potential to reproduce symbolic violence that remains largely invisible yet becomes normalized in everyday life. Such symbolic violence often operates through meaning-making processes that shape societal perceptions of women’s roles and positions. This study aims to examine the representation of women in relationships characterized by symbolic violence in the film Pasutri Gaje and to identify the meanings constructed through dialogue, gestures, and visual elements within the film. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using scenes and film texts from Pasutri Gaje as the primary data. The analysis is grounded in Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, particularly the constructionist approach, to explore the production of meaning. Data were analyzed using Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, which consists of three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth, to identify symbols that represent women within the film’s narrative. The findings reveal that women are represented as subordinate figures associated with emotional and domestic myths. These representations reinforce symbolic violence through language, gestures, and visual elements that repeatedly normalize gender inequality within the film’s narrative. The study demonstrates that film, as a cultural text, plays a significant role in reproducing and sustaining patriarchal values and unequal power relations through representations that appear natural and unquestioned.

Abstract

This study examines the development, thematic orientation, and theoretical position of research on technological determination in mobile AI-mediated communication systems in the period 2021 to 2026. The review maps publication patterns, methodological tendencies, communication contexts, and emerging theoretical contributions. This study uses a systematic literature review using the PRISMA 2020 framework to synthesize studies on technological determinism in mobile AI communication. Articles were searched in Scopus (2021–2026) using keywords related to determinism, mobile AI, and communication, and filtered for English-language peer-reviewed journals, open access, and social sciences. From an initial 169 articles, a step-by-step selection process resulted in 30 articles as the final analysis corpus. Data from these 30 articles were analyzed using bibliometric mapping (VOSviewer) and narrative synthesis to interpret theoretical positions and deterministic mechanisms in the literature. The findings show that qualitative and conceptual approaches dominate studies on identity, governance, and social communication, while quantitative and modelling approaches are more common in studies of digital economy and infrastructure. Across these themes, mobile AI is positioned not merely as a communication tool but as a computational infrastructure that conditions interaction, visibility, authority, and coordination. Based on this synthesis, the article proposes algorithmic structural determinism as a conceptual lens for understanding how communication processes are shaped by platform infrastructures. Future studies need to specify the operational mechanisms of technological conditioning more clearly and develop more integrative theoretical models.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play an important role in the economy and are required to adapt to technological developments in the digital era, including the use of WhatsApp as a communication and marketing medium. WhatsApp is considered effective because it facilitates fast, practical, and direct interaction between business owners and customers. In addition, its use is closely related to the implementation of Islamic communication ethics, which emphasize the values of honesty, trustworthiness, and politeness. This study aims to examine digital communication practices through WhatsApp at Nasi Kuning Tante Jum MSME and to analyze the implementation of Islamic communication ethics in its digital communication activities. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The research was conducted at the Nasi Kuning Tante Jum MSME in Pinrang Regency, utilizing purposive sampling to select informants, who comprised the business owner, the owner's child, and customers. Data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The collected data were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which encompasses data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. To ensure data trustworthiness, validity was tested through method triangulation. The findings reveal that WhatsApp is used as the primary medium for receiving orders, promoting products, and communicating with customers at Nasi Kuning Tante Jum MSME. The use of WhatsApp is considered effective in facilitating interactions between sellers and consumers. Furthermore, the digital communication practices implemented by the business reflect the principles of Islamic communication ethics, including honesty (ṣidq), trustworthiness (amanah), effective message delivery (tabligh), brotherhood (ukhuwah), and politeness in communication. These values are reflected in friendly, honest, and responsive customer service, which helps build customer trust and loyalty. Although internet connectivity remains a challenge, the quality of service is consistently maintained.
