Abstract

The use of internet technology today has resulted in the dissemination of information in all fields easily and quickly globally. One thing that plays a role in this is translation activities, which allow information to be shared in different languages. Translation is an activity and product that is very important for anyone who eager know or introduce things belonging to a group, culture or nation to others. Learning to translate starts from the initial phase of learning a foreign language, but the translation ability is not automatically obtained by mastering a foreign language. Considering that translation is a potential field for the translator profession, the younger generation, especially students majoring in translation, need to be motivated to work in the field of translation which is beneficial to support their achievements in academics as well as in their careers and professional lives in the future..

Abstract

The technical training on determining the ripeness of oil palm fruit aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of students in the field of agriculture, particularly in the management of oil palm crops. The training focuses on teaching the correct techniques for determining the optimal harvesting time to improve production efficiency, ensuring higher quality oil and reducing production losses (losses) typically associated with improper harvesting. This study presents a novel approach by combining theoretical learning on ripeness criteria with hands-on practice in the field. This approach allows students to gain practical experience in oil palm fruit harvesting, using appropriate tools such as egrek, chisel, and others. Unlike traditional training methods that mainly focus on theory, this study involves active participation in fieldwork, providing a comprehensive learning experience. The methodology employed in this community service project combines theoretical lectures and direct field practice. The training begins with lectures on the introduction to oil palm, the botany of the plant, ripeness criteria, and harvesting techniques. Afterward, participants engage in hands-on practice in the field to apply the knowledge of ripeness criteria and harvesting techniques. The harvesting process is then evaluated based on two main factors: production losses and the quality of harvested palm fruit, including oil yield and oil quality. The training proved to be effective in enhancing participants' understanding of the correct ripeness criteria and harvesting techniques, leading to a significant reduction in production losses and an increase in oil quality and yield. Evaluation results indicated a 30% reduction in production losses after implementing the techniques learned in the training. Furthermore, oil extracted from fruits harvested at the ideal ripeness stage showed the highest yield and quality. This training provides a significant contribution to improving the sustainability and productivity of the palm oil industry in Indonesia by enhancing the skills of students and workers in the industry, which ultimately benefits both the economy and the global palm oil market.

Abstract

The palm oil industry in Indonesia, as one of the country’s major economic sectors, contributes significantly to the national economy. However, this sector faces various challenges, particularly related to legal uncertainty that hinders the creation of a conducive investment climate. This study aims to analyze the legal protection for investors in the palm oil plantation sector, focusing on Empus Village, Langkat Regency. The research explores legal issues related to land ownership, social conflicts with local communities, and policy changes that are poorly coordinated. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with triangulation techniques, integrating data from in-depth interviews, field observations, and policy document analysis. The study finds that unclear land ownership and fluctuating policies are the primary obstacles to investment. Additionally, the lack of policy socialization by the government has caused legal uncertainty that disadvantages both investors and local communities. Existing policies, such as Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 26/2017, do not provide clear and consistent legal protection. Therefore, the study recommends enhancing policy socialization, revising legal protection for investors, and enforcing stronger legal frameworks to create a more conducive and sustainable investment climate. This research contributes to the formulation of more inclusive policies and supports the sustainability of the palm oil plantation sector.

Abstract

The application of technology in waste management, particularly shrimp shell waste, has become a key focus in supporting environmental sustainability and community empowerment, especially in coastal areas. One promising initiative is the utilization of shrimp shell waste as a raw material for animal feed production. According to statistical data, the fisheries waste in Indonesia, particularly from the shrimp processing industry, amounts to approximately 200,000 tons annually, with 35% of it derived from shrimp shell waste. This study aims to explore the utilization of shrimp shell waste in animal feed production through the development of a drying machine technology designed to process this waste efficiently. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of shrimp shell drying technology within the context of coastal community empowerment, utilizing a circular economy approach that promotes environmental sustainability and enhances community welfare. The methodology includes stages of planning, preparation, analysis, implementation, as well as mentoring and evaluation. The results of this community service indicate that this technology successfully increased the partners' knowledge on processing shrimp shell waste into nutritious animal feed and boosted their income by up to 20%. Thus, the shrimp shell drying machine technology contributes not only to reducing marine pollution but also provides a sustainable economic solution for coastal communities.

Abstract

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a significant challenge for many villages in Indonesia, including Desa Manunggal in Labuhan Deli Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency. The Community Service Program (PKM) implemented by the University of Al-Azhar Medan aims to support the acceleration of SDGs achievement through assistance in managing village governance competitiveness. Desa Manunggal was chosen due to its substantial potential, although it faces challenges in optimizing these resources. The primary objective of this study is to enhance village competitiveness through improved managerial capacity and resource management based on SDG principles, involving community empowerment and strengthening village institutions.The research uses a participatory approach, involving training on village competitiveness management and direct assistance to village officials and the community. This program was carried out in three phases: preparation, training, and implementation, with collaboration between faculty members, students, and village government. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the SDGs concept into every phase of the program, prioritizing sustainable resource management through strengthening village governance and local economic empowerment, including SMEs and Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDesa).The findings of this study show that the PKM program successfully improved the village government's capacity to manage resources and foster sustainable economic development. Active community participation in this program has had a positive impact on SDG management at the village level, improving the quality of life and strengthening transparent and participatory governance

Abstract

Food security is a major challenge for Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) with limited resources and agricultural land. This study aims to optimize the use of vacant land to enhance food security at the Markaz Penghafal Al-Qur'an of Yayasan Layar Dakwah. The research methodology includes the application of agricultural techniques such as raised bed construction, selection of superior seeds, and efficient plant maintenance. The results show that utilizing vacant land with appropriate agricultural methods can increase food productivity and reduce dependence on external supplies. Tomato plants demonstrated the highest productivity at 2.25 kg/m², followed by red chili (1.75 kg/m²) and shallots (1.25 kg/m²). Additionally, the involvement of students in agricultural activities provided added benefits in terms of skill development and increased motivation. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of agricultural techniques with the pesantren education system, as well as the implementation of simple agricultural technologies that can be applied sustainably. Therefore, this research offers practical solutions to improve food security in pesantren and empower students in the field of agriculture.

Abstract

Limbah plastik dan kebutuhan material perkerasan lingkungan menjadi dua persoalan yang dapat ditangani melalui teknologi tepat guna berbasis komunitas. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan memvalidasi campuran eco-paving block berbahan cacahan plastik tanpa pelelehan dan mentransfer prosedur produksinya kepada Lembaga Pemberdayaan Masyarakat serta warga Kelurahan Bencongan Indah. Metode menggabungkan identifikasi kebutuhan mitra, perancangan lima campuran plastik sebesar 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, dan 25% terhadap berat semen, pembuatan benda uji berukuran 20 × 10 × 6 cm, perawatan 28 hari, pengujian kuat tekan dan berat jenis, analisis multikriteria, sosialisasi, demonstrasi, dan praktik. Campuran 15% menghasilkan kuat tekan tertinggi sebesar 32,80 MPa dengan berat jenis 1.783 kg/m³. Dibandingkan kontrol, kuat tekan meningkat 18,71% dan indeks kuat tekan spesifik meningkat 20,11%. Campuran 20% dan 25% mengalami penurunan kohesi, kesulitan pemadatan, dan penurunan kuat tekan. Campuran 0–20% memenuhi mutu B, sedangkan campuran 25% memenuhi mutu C menurut SNI 03-0691-1996. Program menghasilkan formula prioritas 15%, prosedur tanpa pelelehan, dan model transfer teknologi berbasis validasi teknis. Replikasi memerlukan pengendalian bahan, pemadatan, perawatan, keselamatan kerja, evaluasi peserta, dan monitoring berkala.

Abstract

Panti Asuhan sebagai lembaga Pendidikan dan pemberdayaan anak yang berperan penting dalam dunia pendidikan anak belum dapat melaksanakan fungisnya secara optimal, hal ini dapat dilihat masih minimnya pelatihan ketrampilan hidup (life skills) yang diberikan kepada anak asuhnya. Padahal ketrampilan hidup saat ini telah menjadi kebutuhan yang sangat penting bagi dunia pendidikan anak khususnya dalam usia produktif. Pada era teknologi dan globalisai ini, tuntutan pengetahuan dan ketrampilan tentang Pelatihan Servis AC (Air Conditioning) merupakan salah satu life skills yang terpenting bagi anak karena dapat menjadi solusi efektif terhadap kebutuhan tenaga kerja yang dilakukan secara mandiri dan professional. Hal ini dikarenakan kebutuhan penggunaan AC yang terus meningkat untuk perumahan, gedung perkantoran dan sekolah. Peningkatan ini menyebabkan semakin tingginya kebutuhan layanan servis AC dan menuntut kebutuhan teknisi AC yang terus meningkat. Keadaan ini menjadi salah satu dasar bagi tim dalam memberikaan program pelatiham servis AC sebagai bekal bagi anak panti asuhan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan melalui 4 tahapan yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan pelatihan, evaluasi dan keberlanjutan. Adapun metode pelatiham dilakukan dengan pendekatan partisipatif yang menerapkan metode penyuluhan (teori) dan pelatihan praktik secara langsung. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan tentang AC sekitar 60% dan ketrampilan anak dalam jasa servis AC sebesar 50%.

Abstract

Limited access to laboratory testing encourages communities to assess water mainly by clarity, odor, and taste. This approach cannot adequately detect changes in physicochemical characteristics. This community engagement program developed a Community Water Quality Screening model using TDS and pH meters in Bandar Baru Village. The model integrates education, calibration, duplicate measurements, restricted interpretation, risk communication, and laboratory referral. The analytical draft uses a structured simulated dataset of 48 participants and 72 water samples from six source types. Analyses included descriptive statistics, paired t tests, McNemar tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, chi-square tests, Spearman correlations, intraclass correlation coefficients, and linear regression. Mean literacy scores increased from 42.0 to 70.6 out of 100, a mean increase of 28.5 points (95% CI 25.9-31.1; p<.001). 85.4% of participants mastered at least eight of ten procedural steps. Of 72 samples, 44 were classified as green, 22 as yellow, and 6 as red. Water source type was associated with screening category (chi-square=33.36; p<.001; Cramer V=0.48). Duplicate measurements showed very high consistency for pH (ICC=0.998) and TDS (ICC=1.000). The model offers a practical educational framework but does not replace microbiological and comprehensive chemical testing.

Abstract

Kabupaten Samosir memiliki potensi kopi Arabika, tetapi Kelompok Tani Kopi Kembar masih menghadapi kendala pada pengeringan, pengukuran kadar air, penyimpanan green bean, dan pengendalian roasting. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas teknis petani melalui transfer teknologi pascapanen dan pembelajaran kolaboratif internasional. Metode menggabungkan pendidikan masyarakat, pelatihan, konsultasi, demonstrasi, praktik langsung, pendampingan, serta evaluasi deskriptif. Tahapan kegiatan meliputi identifikasi kebutuhan, penyuluhan, demonstrasi penggunaan alat ukur kadar air, praktik penyimpanan green bean, praktik roasting, dan evaluasi melalui observasi serta diskusi. Hasil menunjukkan perubahan kualitatif pada lima aspek, yaitu penggunaan kadar air sebagai parameter pengeringan, pemahaman kondisi penyimpanan, pengenalan pencatatan profil sangrai, peningkatan pengetahuan mutu, dan bertambahnya wawasan internasional. Kegiatan belum menghasilkan data kuantitatif pretest-posttest, mutu sensoris, atau nilai ekonomi, sehingga dampak tidak dinyatakan dalam persentase. Program ini menegaskan pentingnya integrasi teknologi tepat guna, pendampingan partisipatif, dan kolaborasi multipihak untuk memperbaiki konsistensi mutu kopi Arabika Samosir.
