Abstract

Modern globalisation has transformed the field of translation, requiring skills that go beyond traditional linguistics. Using frameworks such as the European Master's in Translation (EMT) and literary analysis, this research explores how digital transformation, cultural convergence and market forces have reshaped translator competence. The findings show that translators must maintain strong linguistic foundations while also developing technological proficiency and intercultural mediation skills. Translators now act as cultural bridgebuilders, navigating complex contexts that require specialised knowledge, technological adaptability and market awareness. The study emphasises the importance of interdisciplinary education and adaptable learning in preparing translators for 21st century challenges, highlighting the need for skills such as collaborating with AI program, advanced intercultural communication and adapting multimodal content. The study contributes an updated competency framework that balances technological progress with the human element of translation. Comprehensive professional development strategies are proposed that respect both traditional craftsmanship and innovative methodologies in today's interconnected world.

Abstract

The findings of this study demonstrate that achieving true equivalence in machine translation, particularly when dealing with literary texts like Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, presents a range of complex challenges. Through a detailed comparison based on Mona Baker’s theory, the analysis identifies frequent issues at the lexical, grammatical, textual, and pragmatic levels. Google Translate, despite its efficiency in generating rapid translations, often fails to accurately render expressions with cultural significance, nuanced emotional tones, and figurative language. Idiomatic phrases, in particular, tend to be translated literally, stripping them of their intended meanings and stylistic impact. Grammatical inconsistencies are also observed, such as incorrect tense usage, awkward word order, and the omission of important syntactic elements, all of which compromise the clarity and naturalness of the target text.Textual cohesion and pragmatic appropriateness are similarly affected. Translated segments sometimes lack logical flow or contextual relevance, which hinders readers’ comprehension and disrupts the immersive experience that is essential to literary storytelling. The absence of cultural sensitivity in translation is especially evident in references unique to the source culture, which are either misinterpreted or rendered in ways that do not resonate with the Indonesian audience. These recurring challenges highlight the limitations of relying solely on machine translation tools for literary works, where meaning is layered and context-dependent. Although machine translation can serve as a useful preliminary tool, its outputs require extensive human intervention to ensure both linguistic accuracy and cultural fidelity. The study ultimately emphasizes the need for integrating post-editing practices into translator training programs, not only to improve translation quality but also to develop students’ analytical skills and intercultural competence in handling complex texts in the digital age.

Abstract

The effectiveness of register-based machine translation (MT) is assessed in this research using text categorization methodologies. Given that different registers call for different translation strategies—formal, informal, academic, or conversational—the objective of this study is to assess how well MT systems adapt to various registers. A dataset of texts from different domains that had been translated using an MT engine was classified using supervised machine learning methods to determine register-specific correctness and appropriateness. The evaluation focuses on linguistic features, translation accuracy, and register consistency. The results demonstrate that register-aware MT significantly improves translation quality and contextual relevance, especially in the academic and professional domains. The findings show how text classification may be integrated into MT evaluation frameworks to enhance output quality and guide future system development. This supports the register itself as one of the essential components that must be included in register-based machine translation assessment.

Abstract

The translation profession has undergone a significant transformation in the era of globalization and technological advancement. This literature review explores how translator competencies have evolved in response to the increasing integration of digital technologies and the growing demand for cultural mediation. Drawing on 20 recent scholarly works published between 2021 and 2025, the study identifies key changes in translator knowledge and skills, including the integration of computer-assisted translation tools, post-editing of machine translation, and the need for specialization in specific fields. Additionally, the study examines how translator training programs in higher education have adapted to meet these new demands by incorporating technological modules, promoting soft skills, and aligning curricula with global market expectations. The findings suggest that while progress has been made, significant gaps remain between academic preparation and professional realities. Greater collaboration between institutions and industry stakeholders is essential to ensure that future translators are equipped with both the technical and intercultural competencies required in the 21st century. The study highlights the importance of ongoing curriculum reform, critical digital literacy, and lifelong learning in shaping the next generation of translation professionals.

Abstract

This study examines the traditional culinary lexicon of the Batak Toba ethnic group in North Sumatra, Indonesia, with a particular focus on the lexical structures and semantic dimensions of traditional food names. Culinary terminology in this community reflects cultural values, indigenous knowledge, and ancestral traditions. The research aims to identify and analyze the morphological processes and semantic interpretations underlying these food names. A qualitative descriptive method was used, employing structured interviews with native Batak Toba speakers, particularly culinary informants, as well as observational techniques. Data were analyzed using lexical semantics and morphological frameworks. Findings reveal that Batak Toba food names are linguistically complex and culturally rich, incorporating elements such as preparation techniques, symbolic meanings, and ritual significance. Terms like arsik, saksang, and naniura convey not only ingredients and methods but also reflect the cosmology and beliefs of the Batak Toba people. This study contributes to the fields of ethnolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and cultural preservation. It emphasizes the importance of documenting traditional culinary terminology amidst globalization and linguistic homogenization. Future research should broaden the scope to include multiple informants and ethnic subgroups to enhance the generalizability and depth of analysis.
