Abstract

The integration of digital media in language learning has become increasingly important in modern education. This study explores the use of TikTok as a tool to assess and improve students' descriptive text writing skills in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The research was conducted with Class X students at SMA Sultan Iskandar Muda Medan, North Sumatra, using a Classroom Action Research approach. The study involved two cycles: the first without TikTok and the second incorporating TikTok as a learning medium. Data was collected through observations, tests, and assessments of students' written and oral presentations. Results showed a significant improvement in students' descriptive writing skills when using TikTok, with higher scores in content relevance, clarity of description, and overall engagement. The study found that TikTok provided an interactive and engaging platform for students to practice their descriptive writing skills in a real-world context. This research concludes that incorporating TikTok in EFL classrooms can effectively enhance students' descriptive writing abilities and increase their motivation to learn English. The findings suggest that integrating social media platforms like TikTok can be a valuable strategy for language educators seeking to improve students' writing skills in a digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to identify four types of sarcasm in each utterance spoken by the speakers on the YouTube Channel "Majelis Lucu Indonesia" (MLI) on the podcast video "Naik Jin ke Amerika Cuma 2 Jam"- episode 44. The object of this research is the conversation between 2 persons taken from a podcast video on the YouTube Channel. The results of this study show that in the podcast there are several speakers' utterances that contain the four types of sarcasm, among the four types of sarcasm-proportional sarcasm, lexical sarcasm, like-prefixed sarcasm, and illocutionary sarcasm, from speakers in the podcast video. The total number of speakers’ utterances in the podcast is fifty-eight (58) which is divided into four types of sarcasm. As the result, there are 21 proportional sarcasm utterances, 23 lexical sarcasm utterances, 9 like-prefixed Sarcasm utterances, and 5 illocutionary sarcasm in the podcast video. This provides useful information to find out the utterances of the four types of sarcasm and what type of utterance they belong to be associated with the sarcasm utterances in the podcast video.

Abstract

For many years, English has been a core subject in the National Examination (UN) across all levels of education, including Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High School. In 2020, the Indonesian Ministry of Education introduced a new policy that replaced the UN with the National Assessment, which aims to evaluate students' proficiency in literacy and numeracy skills. However, notably, the government has excluded English from the subjects assessed at the Junior High School level. Consequently, this study seeks to explore the perceptions of students and teachers regarding the omission of the English subject from the National Assessment. The research involved 3 English teachers and 43 students from a junior high school in Tebing Tinggi, North Sumatra, who had previously participated in the new assessment format. Data were gathered through questionnaires and interviews. Specifically, the questionnaire data were analysed using descriptive statistics, while the interview data underwent analysis through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, as outlined by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings reveal that both students and teachers believe that English should be reinstated in the National Assessment. Additionally, the exclusion of English elicits contrasting sentiments; while the majority of students express dissatisfaction, the teachers predominantly feel a sense of relief. Ultimately, this article discusses several considerations concerning the implementation of the National Assessment.

Abstract

This study examines Business English acquisition patterns among employees at Pelindo, Indonesia's largest port operator, focusing on workplace communication challenges in an increasingly globalized maritime industry. Through qualitative case study methodology, the research surveyed 50 employees across various divisions using a mixed-method questionnaire combining Likert-scale assessments and open-ended responses. Results indicate high employee motivation for Business English acquisition (mean 3.50) driven by professional demands, yet reveal significant challenges in legal terminology comprehension (mean 2.95) and complex business document creation (mean 3.20). The study found that technology integration in learning processes (mean 3.80) and case-study approaches (mean 3.50) significantly enhance Business English acquisition effectiveness. These findings contribute to understanding specialized language acquisition in state-owned enterprises, particularly in maritime logistics contexts, and suggest the need for integrated learning approaches combining formal instruction with authentic business communication practice. The research implications are particularly relevant for developing targeted language training programs in international port operations contexts.
