Abstract

The problem of social inequality reflects inequality in power relations, distribution of resources, and ideological legitimacy, which are often wrapped in religious narratives. In fact, the Qur'an contains fundamental values such as justice, solidarity, equality, and defense of the oppressed (mustaḍ‘afīn). This article aims to re-examine in depth the approach of social interpretation of the Qur'an in responding to issues of socioeconomic inequality and to reveal the role of the Qur'an in defending social inequality. The research includes a literature study with a critical hermeneutic approach in reading social verses in interpretations that are in accordance with the characteristics of interpretation. The primary source refers to verses of the Qur'an relating to the principle of economic justice, and some other related literature as secondary sources. This article argues that the social verses of the Qur’an are grounded in the principles of justice (al-‘adl), compassion (raḥmah), and egalitarianism (musāwah). These spirits are in line with social interpretation based on a critical hermeneutical framework that connects the text, context, and social reality. The findings reveal that social exegesis not only interprets the text normatively but also presents it as a tool for social criticism against entrenched structures of injustice. This exegesis promotes the formation of transformative ethics that favour marginalised groups. This research opens up a space for dialogue between religious texts and the practice of social justice in the context of contemporary Muslim society, and expands the horizon of exegesis as a tool for social change.

Abstract

This study examines the Qur’anic concept of iṭ‘ām al-ṭa‘ām as a normative and operational ethic for social policy, analyzing its relevance to Indonesia’s national Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program launched in 2025. Responding to persistent challenges in child nutrition and food security, exemplified by 21.5% stunting prevalence in SSGI 2023, the study addresses structural inequalities in access to nutrition highlighted by the Global Nutrition Report 2024. Employing a thematic Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī), the research integrates lexical–semantic analyses of feeding-related verses, Makkiyah–Madaniyah contextualization, and classical and modern exegetical insights, operationalized via maqāṣid al-sharīʿah and the Capability Approach. Findings reveal that Qur’anic discourses on iṭ‘ām al-ṭa‘ām articulate not only distributive justice and protection of vulnerable populations but also the mechanisms through which institutional design, governance, and community practices shape the realization of human capabilities. This framework allows a critical assessment of MBG’s transformative impact beyond logistical delivery, providing evidence-based guidance for ethically coherent and socially effective nutrition policies. The study contributes methodologically by advancing an Applied Social Exegesis model that bridges Qur’anic ethics with contemporary policy evaluation.

Abstract

This study examines the reception and praxis of Qur’anic eco-theological values within the cultural life of the Muslim community of Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, through a living Qur’an approach combined with Hans Robert Jauss’s reception theory. It investigates how Qur’anic concepts such as tawḥīd, khilāfah, amānah, and ecological balance are received, interpreted, and internalized through local wisdom, including the philosophy of Maja Labo Dahu, the ethical principle Ngaha Aina Ngoho, and cultural practices such as Rimpu and Peta Kapanca. Using qualitative methods comprising literature review, cultural observation, and contextual tafsīr analysis, the study finds that these traditions function as concrete modes of cultural reception that translate Qur’anic eco-theological values into everyday ethical practices, particularly in fostering environmental responsibility and social restraint. However, the analysis also reveals interpretive limits and contextual constraints, where specific ecological meanings are selectively emphasized while others remain implicit or symbolic. Theoretically, this study contributes to living Qur’an scholarship by demonstrating how reception theory can be employed to map the horizon of expectation through which Qur’anic meanings are culturally negotiated. Empirically, it highlights local wisdom as both a medium and a boundary for the internalization of Islamic ecological ethics in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

Abstract

Within the context of Islamic education, Surah al-Fātiḥah holds potential as a foundation for holistic pedagogy that integrates spiritual, moral, and intellectual dimensions. Nevertheless, empirical research systematically examining the application of Qur’anic Edu-Theology principles in modern educational practices remains limited, creating a gap between normative Qur’anic frameworks and contemporary pedagogical implementation. This study employs a qualitative approach by combining taḥlīlī exegesis for key-term analysis with mawḍū‘ī exegesis for thematic understanding of Surah al-Fātiḥah, integrated with modern educational theories such as compassion-based pedagogy, character education, and behaviorism. The study highlights six core principles of Qur’anic Edu-Theology: (1) divine compassion, (2) inclusivity, (3) justice and moral accountability, (4) loyalty and exemplary conduct, (5) consistency and perseverance, and (6) learning from exemplary models while avoiding misguidance, which can serve as practical guidelines in modern education. The findings indicate that these principles can form a pedagogical framework that is humanistic, transformative, and value-oriented, while simultaneously necessitating adaptive strategies to address normative challenges, including technology integration, student-centered approaches, and project-based learning. The primary contribution of this study is the introduction of the Qur’anic Edu-Theology concept as a paradigm for holistic education relevant to the modern context, while also providing a conceptual foundation for further research to explore other surahs and empirically test their effectiveness in educational practice

Abstract

This study examines Muḥammad Saʿīd al-ʿAshmāwī’s conceptual approach to interpreting Qur’anic verses concerning homosexuality, emphasizing the distinction between al-fikr al-ṣāfī (pure ideas) and al-fikr al-dīnī (religious thought). Al-ʿAshmāwī asserts that pure ideas are transcendent and objective, whereas religious thought constitutes human interpretation influenced by social, historical, and cultural contexts. The study aims to explore how this framework enables exegesis that preserves normative principles while remaining responsive to contemporary social, ethical, and legal dynamics. Employing a qualitative methodology through literature review, the analysis is both thematic-categorical and epistemological, examining relevant Qur’anic verses and al-ʿAshmāwī’s works. Findings indicate that his approach foregrounds the moral, ethical, and social essence of revelation, treating legal prescriptions as contextually constructed by humans. By integrating classical and modern hermeneutics with local and global perspectives, this method ensures interpretations remain relevant to issues of justice, human dignity, and contemporary social dynamics. The study contributes to the development of a transformative exegetical framework that bridges transcendent principles and human interpretive needs in a humanistic, critical, and practical manner, offering a methodological foundation for contemporary Qur’anic studies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the tradition of Javanese-language Qur’anic exegesis within the context of Islam’s development in Java, with particular attention to the interaction between Qur’anic teachings and local culture. The study positions Javanese Qur’anic tafsir not only as a reflection of Islamization as a cultural process, but also as an intellectual process that records an ongoing dialogue between religious texts and the socio-cultural realities of Javanese society. Employing a qualitative approach through textual analysis, this research examines Tafsīr Tāj al-Muslimīn min Kalām Rabb al-‘Ālamīn by Misbah Mustafa. The analysis focuses on how the tafsir accommodates local practices such as kondangan, grave visitation, and the offering of prayers for ancestors, as well as on the use of the Javanese language and the pégon script as media for Qur’anic interpretation. The findings demonstrate that Tafsīr Tāj al-Muslimīn represents an acculturative approach to Qur’anic interpretation, integrating Islamic teachings in a dialogical manner with local traditions without compromising the religion’s fundamental principles. Within this framework, the tafsir portrays Islam not as a force that eradicates local culture, but as a normative system that guides, harmonizes, and enriches local traditions through higher Qur’anic spiritual values. These findings affirm that Javanese Qur’anic exegesis constitutes a living intellectual tradition that plays a significant role in shaping a harmonious and contextually grounded form of religiosity in Java.

Abstract

This article examines M. Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir Al-Mishbah through Wilhelm Dilthey’s three-stage hermeneutic framework: Erlebnis, Ausdruck, and Verstehen. Employing qualitative library research with a hermeneutic approach, this study analyzes how local cultural experiences and historical contexts are reflected in Shihab’s interpretation of the Qur’an. The analysis locates Erlebnis within Shihab’s socio-cultural background, including his Bugis-Makassar upbringing and intellectual formation, which shaped his interpretive perspective. These experiences are expressed as Ausdruck in his contextual reading of Qur’anic verses, particularly concerning sacrificial practices in QS al-Ḥajj [22]: 34–37 and communal ethics in QS al-Mā’idah [5]: 2, where local cultural symbols and social values serve as interpretive references. Through Verstehen, these cultural expressions are understood within the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, demonstrating that local traditions may serve as meaningful resources for Qur’anic interpretation without undermining the universal principles of Islam. The study argues that Tafsir Al-Mishbah represents a contextual mode of exegesis that integrates Indonesian cultural realities into the interpretive process. This finding contributes to the development of Indonesian hermeneutic discourse and offers a model for contextual tafsir in culturally plural Muslim societies.

Abstract

Studies on women’s ʿawrah, particularly concerning postmenopausal women, remain relatively limited and are predominantly framed within normative juridical discussions. Yet the biological and social transformations accompanying menopause call for a more contextual and purposive interpretation of Qur’anic guidance. This article examines the interpretation of QS al-Nūr [24]:60 in Min Hadyi Sūrat al-Nūr by Hannān Lahhām through the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, with particular attention to the ethical and tarbawī dimensions of his exegesis. The novelty of this study lies in its examination of postmenopausal women as a distinct legal and ethical subject in the Qur’an and its reconstruction of rukhṣah as a form of ethical reasoning rather than a mere legal exception. Employing a qualitative library research method, the study draws upon Lahhām’s tafsir as its primary source, supplemented by classical and contemporary works of tafsir and Islamic legal thought. The findings demonstrate that Lahhām interprets the concession granted in QS al-Nūr [24]:60 not as unrestricted permissibility, but as an ethically guided accommodation that remains grounded in the values of ʿiffah (chastity), ḥayāʾ (modesty), and the preservation of human dignity. Through a maqāṣid-oriented reading, the verse recognizes postmenopausal women as a distinct legal subject whose changing biological and social circumstances warrant a proportional adjustment of legal expectations while maintaining moral coherence. Consequently, Lahhām’s interpretation illustrates the adaptive and purposive character of Qur’anic law, demonstrating how legal flexibility safeguards human welfare and dignity in changing social contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning structure and ecological ethical implications of fasād in QS. al-Rūm [30]:41 and QS. al-Baqarah [2]:205 through a qualitative textual approach that combines thematic interpretation and ecocritical reading. The analysis focuses on the lexical and exegetical meanings of fasād, the subject of responsibility, the object of destruction, the spatial scope of damage, and the relation between human conduct and its consequences. The study finds that QS. al-Rūm [30]:41 presents fasād as a visible consequence of collective human action in the domains of land and sea, while QS. al-Baqarah [2]:205 presents fasād through the destructive conduct of a particular actor who damages crops and the continuity of life. These differences indicate distinct textual emphases between collective ecological consequence and actor-centered destructive action, without implying that the Qur'an constructs rigid ecological models. Based on these findings, this study formulates three analytical orientations for Qur'anic ecocritical reading: ecological relationality, the manifestation of ecological consequence within creation, and theological responsibility. This framework does not attribute autonomous agency to nature or impose modern ecological theory upon the Qur'anic text. It uses ecocritical sensitivity under the semantic and theological control of tafsīr. The study contributes to Qur'anic ecological discourse by clarifying how ecological ethics can be derived from textual indications of fasād while acknowledging the epistemological limits of applying ecocriticism to revelatory texts.
