Abstract

Nowadays, Muslims need a concept of monotheism that is not only academic but also increases faith. Nursi divided the idea of monotheism into two dimensions: birth monotheism and true monotheism. These concepts focused on growing faith related to current life. Both interpretations of exoteric and esoteric monotheism verses were critical to understand. The research explored Nursi's esoteric approach to monotheistic verses and their influence on Islamic theology. The qualitative research design employed the literature review method by obtaining data from journals, proceedings, books, and documentaries. Then, data were analyzed using content analysis techniques and esoteric and historical approaches. The research results indicated that Nursi's esoteric interpretation of monotheistic verses aligned with other sufi mufassirs but had two significant differences. First, Nursi's esoteric approach, especially in tafakkur, provided concrete examples that could be felt physically. Second, as a member of the Naqshbandi Tariqa, Nursi consistently referred to asmā' al-ḥusnā and associated it with manifestations reflected in all entities when interpreting the Qur'an. Nursi's interpretation of monotheistic verses in Islamic theological thought became more dominant at the international level. Meanwhile, at the national level, the influence was more socio-religious. Nevertheless, Nursi's interpretation remains essential in addressing religious realities in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores the paradigms and approaches employed in Quranic studies to mitigate radicalism in Singapore. A qualitative descriptive methodology was utilised to examine the patterns of Quranic study. The primary and secondary data sources comprised the Muslim community in the country, alongside relevant literature including books, journals, and research reports. Data collection methods included interviews, documentation, and observation, with subsequent analysis conducted using qualitative data analysis techniques. The findings reveal that while the Muslim community generally enjoys the freedom of religious practice and access to Islamic educational institutions and organisations, the government has instituted regulations to ensure that Quranic study promotes moderate thought, openness, and interreligious harmony. Although the city provides a conducive environment for Quranic studies, measures are in place to maintain social harmony and prevent potential radicalisation. The Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) mandates requirements for preachers, including obtaining permits, demonstrating speaker competency, ensuring appropriate content, providing security assurance, and securing location permits. MUIS employs three main approaches in Quranic study: 1) categorising preachers based on their knowledge, experience, and skills; 2) using interpretive methods such as thematic, linguistic analysis, historical, and comparative approaches, which are regularly evaluated; and 3) monitoring the content of the material through reporting mechanisms and documentation from the start to the end of activities. The study concludes that the approach to Quranic study in the country plays a significant role in shaping understanding and the application of Islamic teachings, underpinned by the values of moderation and religious tolerance.

Abstract

This article examines the characteristics of the manuscript exegesis of Surah al-Baqarah by Abdul Latif Syakur. This study reinforces Islah Gusmian's analysis that tafsirs born from the 20th century to the 1990s object of study revolved around selected surahs or certain juz. This interpretive manuscript needs to reveal its characteristics to strengthen the analysis regarding the systematic presentation, sources, methods, styles, and advantages and disadvantages to demonstrate the information in the manuscript. This research is a literature study of the manuscript tafsir of QS. al-Baqarah and is descriptive analysis. This research shows that the systematic presentation of this interpretation is consistent with the order of the verses in the letter being interpreted, even though all of al-Baqarah's letters have not been completely interpreted. The method used is the global method (ijmāli). The reference sources used are the hadiths of the Prophet Saw, the sayings of ṣaḥabat, qirā'at al-Qur'ān, and sababun nuzul. The dominant style is the lughāwī style, where descriptions of mufradāt and reviews of aspects of nahwu and ṣarf color this interpretation. This interpretation is not free from advantages and disadvantages. Theoretically, the advantage of this interpretation is that it makes it easier for readers to understand the meanings of the verses of the Qur'an. Still, behind this convenience, no more detailed analysis of the interpreted verses is a drawback. Manuscript of QS. al-Baqarah interpretation fills the gap in references, adds to the collection of manuscripts in the field of interpretation, and makes new contributions to the development of Qur'anic studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Cordoba Qur'an Special for Muslimah features the '319 thematic interpretations regarding women,' which is intended to 'beautify' women by making them pious women. However, the main question is what kind of 'piety' is meant. From this section, it is evident how women are made objects within it. As an interpretation, this prominent feature is never free of interest. This article aims to explain and analyze the construction of women's piety in the related mushaf and its relevance to the aspects of tafsir scholarship and the context of positioning women in life. By using explanatory and correlative analysis of the 319 thematic interpretations specifically for women in the mushaf, this article shows that women's piety is constructed through the process of thematizing Qur'anic verses according to certain understandings through titles that give a convincing impression because they contain narratives of hadith or explanations by Muslim figures. However, the relevance of these interpretations is questionable, both from the aspect of tafsir scholarship and the aspect of women's existence itself. In fact, in some examples of interpretation, certain parts are neglected, such as the context of the verses and the resulting interpretations that tend to be patriarchal. Thus, this issue cannot be ignored. It is not only related to the discourse of interpretive authority but also concerns gender justice, which deserves attention.

Abstract

This study examines the translation of the Qur’an in the contemporary Western context, focusing on the post-September 11 tragedy. The translation of the Qur’an at this phase serves as a gateway for understanding Islam and plays a pivotal role in shaping the perception of Islam in Western society. Furthermore, these translations are intertwined with Islamic socio-political discourse. This study's primary objective is to analyze the development of methodological approaches in translating the Qur’an in the contemporary West and explore the production of Islamic discourse within these translations. Using textual and content analysis, this research posits that, firstly, the methodology of Qur’an translation in the contemporary West has witnessed significant advancement in methodological aspects. This can be observed through the transition from literal, interlineal, and polemical translations to more contextual and even reformist translations. Secondly, apart from being influenced by the socio-political landscape of Islam in the West, the translations of the Qur’an also contribute to the creation of Islamic discourse, particularly in shaping the perception of Qur’an translation in the contemporary Western context, which strives for openness, contemporaneity, and the restoration of Islam’s image and the Qur’an’s oral power.

Abstract

Water is a vital element that sustains life and maintains the balance of the global ecosystem. This article examines the correlation between the Earth’s water reservoirs and environmental preservation as indicated in the Qur’an. The study employs a semantic analysis method within the framework of iʿjāz lughawī (linguistic inimitability) and iʿjāz ʿilmī (scientific inimitability), focusing on key verses from Surah al-Ḥijr (15:22) and al-Mu’minūn (23:18–19), and is supported by an interdisciplinary literature review. The findings reveal that the term asqaynā refers to the process of water infiltration into the soil, while askannā denotes the mechanism of subterranean water storage. These terms represent a complex hydrological cycle, encompassing rainfall, infiltration, percolation, and plant absorption. This process supports photosynthesis, maintains soil moisture, and enhances ecological stability sustainably. The study concludes that the Qur’an not only conveys spiritual and moral teachings, but also contains scientific insights aligned with the principles of environmental sustainability. It contributes to the development of ecological Qur’anic exegesis rooted in integrating scientific knowledge and divine revelation.

Abstract

The narrative of Prophet Ismāʾīl’s sacrifice holds a central place in the exegetical tradition of the Qur’an, historically interpreted through literal and historical lenses by classical scholars. However, progressive Qur’anic hermeneutics provide a more contextual reading that resonates with the ethical and societal dynamics of contemporary life. This study revisits the story of Prophet Ismāʾīl’s sacrifice using a progressive exegetical approach by exploring the interpretations of three influential scholars: Muḥammad ‘Abduh, Muḥammad Ḥusain Ṭabaṭaba’ī, and Hamka. Employing a qualitative methodology and an extensive literature-based analysis, the study demonstrates that progressive interpretations do not merely critique literalism but emphasize deeper spiritual and ethical dimensions—particularly the concept of total submission (aslama) to God, the reinforcement of spiritual education within the family, and the exemplification of personal sacrifice for the collective good. The narrative is also interpreted as a symbolic model for the parent-child relationship in fostering communication, trust, and social piety. The findings affirm that progressive exegesis offers a constructive bridge between scriptural texts and contemporary contexts, enhancing the applicability and vitality of Qur’anic teachings in addressing modern spiritual, educational, and ethical challenges.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze how the Living Qur’an and Hadith approach is operationalized in the eco-pesantren at Al-Kamal Integrated Islamic Boarding School (PPTA), Blitar, East Java, Indonesia, and to uncover its contribution to environmental empowerment and the surrounding community. This research employs a qualitative field research method using the Living Qur’an-Hadith approach within the framework of socio-cultural studies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, with research subjects including pesantren leaders, eco-pesantren program managers, and students (santri). The findings reveal the following: first, the basic principles of the eco-pesantren at PPTA are rooted in ecological values found in selected Qur’anic verses (QS al-Baqarah [2]: 30; QS al-A‘rāf [7]: 56; QS al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: 77) and prophetic traditions that emphasize human vicegerency, the prohibition of environmental destruction, and cleanliness as part of faith. Second, these principles are implemented through sanitation programs (clean water provision, hygiene facilities, and a health post) and a waste bank system involving waste sorting and utilization of both organic and inorganic waste. Third, the eco-pesantren not only impacts the pesantren internally but also generates economic and social benefits for the surrounding community, such as utilizing food waste for livestock feed and generating income from plastic waste. This study demonstrates that the application of ecological principles from the Qur’an and Hadith through the eco-pesantren concept at PPTA has a significant impact on environmental awareness and community well-being, while enriching the study of the Qur’an and Hadith within the context of contextual social practices.

Abstract

Translating the Qur'an is a complex task that requires not only linguistic accuracy but also sensitivity to semantic and spiritual meanings. One of the major challenges in Qur'anic translation lies in rendering cognitive terms such as tafakkur, tadabbur, and ʿaql, which possess complex and multifaceted semantic dimensions. This study aims to identify the diagnostic and supplementary semantic features of these three terms using the Componential Analysis (CA) approach. In addition, it evaluates their lexical equivalents in two Indonesian and two English Qur'anic translations to assess semantic equivalence. The findings reveal that although the three terms share cognitive and contemplative features, each reflects distinct orientations and functions: tafakkur emphasizes exploratory thinking about observable phenomena; tadabbur involves deductive reflection on the implicit meanings of verses; and ʿaql denotes evaluative reasoning grounded in knowledge. The translation assessment indicates that the Hilali & Khan and Saheeh International versions provide the most semantically accurate renderings, whereas the Kemenag and Muhammad Thalib translations exhibit certain limitations. These results highlight the importance of a semantic-based approach in Qur'anic translation to preserve the depth and accuracy of the Qur'an's cognitive–spiritual message. This study contributes to the cross-linguistic understanding of the semantic nuances of Qur'anic cognitive terms and provides a methodological foundation for further research on meaning transfer and translation strategies in Qur'anic exegesis and translation studies.

Abstract

This article examines the exegetical hybridity in the book Tafsīr Marāḥ Labīd, a Qur’anic commentary authored by the nineteenth-century Javanese scholar Syekh Nawawi al-Bantani. By highlighting the marginalization of Southeast Asian voices in mainstream tafsīr studies, the research demonstrates how Nawawi creatively integrated classical Islamic scholarship from Ottoman-Ḥijāz networks with local Bantenese agrarian ethics. Through textual-historical criticism, comparative hermeneutics, and digital ethnography, the study reveals Nawawi’s systematic method: employing variant recitations (qirāʾāt) to produce context-sensitive legal rulings, filtering non-essential narratives (Isrāʾīliyyāt) to prioritize ethical lessons, and applying maqāṣid pragmatism to address both colonial and social injustices. This hybrid approach transformed Qur’anic exegesis into subtle resistance against Dutch land exploitation while simultaneously promoting communal welfare. Today, Marāḥ Labīd remains a living tradition within Indonesian pesantren, relevant to contemporary issues ranging from environmental stewardship and gender-inclusive ethics to social moderation and pandemic responses. The article underscores Nawawi’s legacy as a decolonial model, demonstrating that Nusantara scholarship has actively and sustainably shaped Islamic intellectual and social landscapes through adaptive fidelity to classical orthodoxy while enabling innovation in modern contexts.
