Abstract

This study aims to examine the Mosque Prosperity Movement (GAMIS) as a formulation of modern Sufism in the thoughts of Sheikh Akbar Muhammad Fathurahman within the Idrisiyyah Order. Sufism is understood not only as a process of spiritual development and purification of the soul through tazkiyah an-nafs, dhikr, and moral development, but also as a form of social service that provides benefits for the community. The concept of suluk developed by Sheikh Akbar emphasizes that the spiritual journey is not separate from social life, but must be realized in concrete actions oriented towards service and community empowerment. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method through field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The results show that GAMIS positions the mosque as a center of spiritual, educational, social, and economic activities that build individual and collective piety. Sufi values such as sincerity, modesty, love, service, trust, and patience are implemented through activities such as daily suluk, charity, congregational character development, and community empowerment programs. Thus, GAMIS is a modern, adaptive and contextual model of Sufism, which is able to integrate spiritual and social aspects harmoniously, and provides a real contribution to the revitalization of the function of mosques and strengthening community life in the contemporary era.

Abstract

Interpretation methods are generally divided into four types, namely tahlili, ijmali, muqaran, and maudhui. However, beyond these general methods, each interpreter, or mufasir, has their own unique perspective when interpreting the Quran, known as manhaj al-khash or the interpreter's special method. This research aims to discuss Ibn Ashur's manhaj al-khash in writing his exegesis, At-tahrir wa at-Tanwir. This study uses a qualitative research method based on literature review. The primary source in this research is Tafsir At-tahrir wa at-tanwir Juz 27, while the secondary sources refer to books, texts, and articles related to the research theme. The results of this study indicate that there are at least fifteen manhaj al-khash of Ibn Ashur in writing his exegesis, pertaining to the methods of using interpretation sources as well as the writing methods in his exegesis.

Abstract

The phenomenon of singlehood has sparked debate among Muslims regarding its compatibility with religious teachings. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method by exploring thematic hadith studies based on the term al-rahbāniyyah (singlehood). Meanwhile, the approach used in this study is a theological approach (maqashid al-sunnah) elaborated with a sociological approach. The results show that even though al-rahbāniyyah is historically associated with monastic practices that are criticized in the Qur’an (57:27), thematic hadith studies offer more nuanced insights into balancing spiritual devotion and social responsibility. By analyzing hadith thematically through the keyword al-rahbāniyyah, this study successfully demonstrates how Islamic tradition navigates individual autonomy, marital obligations, and communal ethics, while also providing a critical lens for addressing the issue of celibacy in the modern era. The results of this study conclude that the thematic insights of al-rahbāniyyah encourage inclusive dialogue about celibacy, promoting flexibility in Islamic law while maintaining core ethical principles.

Abstract

This article critically examines Norbert Nebes' reading of the tragedy of the Martyrs of Najran and the collapse of the Kingdom of Himyar, particularly in relation to the interpretation of QS al-Burūj [85]:4. Using a philological-historical and critical hermeneutic approach, this study shows that Nebes' epigraphic historicism—although excellent in reconstructing the geopolitics of early 6th-century South Arabia—tends to reduce the revelation of the Qur'an to a historical artifact that is equated with inscriptions and hagiographic texts. This reduction ignores the theological and rhetorical autonomy of the Qur'an as a discourse that interprets history, rather than merely reflecting it. Through a methodological dialogue with Angelika Neuwirth's discursive paradigm and Irfan Shahid's humanistic approach, this article asserts that the tragedy of Najran cannot be adequately understood through historical verification alone, but requires a reading that integrates the meaning of faith, human experience, and moral transformation. This study argues that an adequate methodology for religious studies must transcend historical positivism by balancing philological precision and theological reflection, so that revelation is understood as a meaningful event that continues to live across time.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reinterpretation of polemical verses in the Qur'an from the perspective of modern Muslim reformist hermeneutics, particularly through Mun'im Sirry's study in Scriptural Polemics (2014). Using qualitative methods and a literature review approach, this study utilizes the contextual hermeneutics theoretical framework of Fazlur Rahman, Abdullah Saeed, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, and Muhammad Arkoun to explore the dynamics of textual meaning between its historical context and universal values. The results show that reformist interpretations of verses such as Q.S. 3:85 and Q.S. 5:51 shift the exclusive meaning towards an inclusive paradigm that emphasizes the ethics of coexistence, religious freedom, and human solidarity. Polemical verses are no longer read as legitimizing theological conflict, but rather as a moral basis for fair and civilized interfaith relations. This study recommends strengthening contextual interpretation studies in Islamic academic circles and integrating pluralistic values into contemporary religious discourse.
