Abstract

Hypertension during pregnancy is one of the most serious complications that can increase the risk of morbidity and mortality for the mother and fetus. Pregnant women's understanding of hypertension during gestation plays a very important role in the prevention and management of these conditions. This study aims to analyze the relationship between pregnant women's knowledge of gestational hypertension and the prevalence of hypertension in the Talise Health Center's work area in Palu City, Central Sulawesi. This study used an analytical cross-sectional design with 51 respondents selected through convenience sampling. Data were obtained through a structured questionnaire to assess knowledge levels and through blood pressure checks to detect hypertension. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test. The study found that the majority of respondents' knowledge fell into the poor (37.3%), sufficient (33.3%), and good (29.4%) categories. The prevalence of hypertension among respondents was 56.9%. Statistical tests showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge about gestational hypertension and the prevalence of hypertension (p=0.007). These findings suggest that improving maternal knowledge through health education may help reduce the risk of hypertension during pregnancy. However, the cross-sectional design of this study limits the ability to establish causal relationships

Abstract

Fish and fish by-products are rich in high-quality protein and bioactive compounds, but their use in value-added food products is still limited. Fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) has outstanding digestibility and functional properties, making it a potential ingredient for food fortification. However, differences in fish species, hydrolysis methods, and fortification levels can affect nutritional quality and sensory acceptance. This literature review aims to synthesize the latest evidence on the impact of adding various types of fish protein hydrolysates to food products, with a focus on nutritional value, physicochemical properties, and sensory characteristics. The literature review was conducted using the ScienceDirect and PubMed databases following the PRISMA approach. Thirteen eligible studies published between 2015 and 2025 were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis. The reviewed studies indicated that FPH derived from salmon, tilapia, seabass, anchovy, tuna, cod, sea bream, and mullet consistently increased protein content, improved amino acid profiles, increased antioxidant activity, and, in some cases, improved mineral content and shelf life. Moderate fortification levels (around 5–10%) provided the best balance between nutritional improvement and sensory acceptance, while higher levels tended to cause darker color changes, texture changes, and unpleasant tastes such as bitterness. Fish protein hydrolysates are promising functional ingredients for nutritionally enriched food products. Optimization of hydrolysis methods and fortification levels is necessary to maximize nutritional benefits while maintaining sensory quality. Further research is needed to evaluate bioavailability and long-term health effects, especially in nutritionally vulnerable populations.

Abstract

Post-appendectomy pain, caused by tissue trauma and inflammation, significantly impedes patient recovery and highlights the need for effective, non-pharmacological interventions to complement standard analgesics. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of Finger Grip Relaxation and Lavender Aromatherapy in reducing pain intensity among post-appendectomy patients.  A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with two groups was conducted involving 30 adult patients (aged 18–65 years) at dr. H. Jusuf SK Tarakan Regional General Hospital. Participants were selected using purposive sampling and assigned to either the Finger Grip Relaxation group (n = 15) or the Lavender Aromatherapy group (n = 15). Each intervention was administered for 30 minutes daily over two consecutive days. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS; 0–10). Due to non-normal data distribution confirmed by Shapiro–Wilk tests, data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for within-group changes and the Mann–Whitney U test for between-group comparisons (α = 0.05). Both interventions yielded a statistically significant reduction in post-appendectomy pain. In the Finger Grip Relaxation group, the mean NRS score decreased from 6.60 to 4.20 (p = 0.001). In the Lavender Aromatherapy group, the mean NRS score decreased from 7.60 to 4.27 (p = 0.001). The Mann–Whitney U test revealed a significant difference in pain reduction between the two groups (p = 0.012), indicating that Lavender Aromatherapy produced a greater decrease in pain intensity. Descriptive analyses confirmed no significant differences in baseline characteristics (age, sex, and health history) between the groups.  Both Lavender Aromatherapy and Finger Grip Relaxation serve as promising complementary options for post-appendectomy pain management. However, Lavender Aromatherapy demonstrated superior efficacy in pain reduction within this small-scale study. Future studies with randomized controlled designs and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate these preliminary findings

Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a severe complication of diabetes mellitus that contribute to delayed wound healing, increased amputation risk, and substantial healthcare burden. Beyond vascular and metabolic abnormalities, malnutrition plays a critical role in prolonging inflammation, impairing collagen synthesis, and delaying tissue regeneration. Although nutritional support is increasingly incorporated into DFU management, its clinical effectiveness remains variably reported. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of nutritional interventions and the association between nutritional status and wound healing outcomes in patients with DFU. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Tools. The review protocol was not registered in PROSPERO. Articles were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest using the keywords “diabetic foot ulcer”, “nutritional intervention”, and “wound healing”. Inclusion criteria comprised original quantitative studies published in English between 2022 and 2026 involving adult DFU patients. Data were extracted using structured tables and synthesized narratively. Nine eligible studies demonstrated that nutritional interventions, including oral nutritional supplementation, micronutrient supplementation, dietary modification, and nutrition-related multidisciplinary approaches, were associated with greater wound size reduction, improved inflammatory biomarkers, and enhanced re-epithelialization. Observational evidence consistently showed that poor nutritional status was linked to higher ulcer severity and increased amputation risk. Nutritional optimization appears to be a clinically meaningful component of DFU management and may be beneficial when integrated into comprehensive care strategies.

Abstract

Analog rice is a potential alternative staple food for managing degenerative diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and dyslipidemia. It can be formulated from various raw materials, including tubers, cereals, legumes, pulses, vegetables, and fruits, resulting in a product that resembles white rice. It contains bioactive compounds at levels comparable to or higher than that of white rice. The bioactive compounds, such as dietary fiber and resistant starch, function to slow glucose absorption and promote beneficial SCFA production, while the phenolic compounds act as potent antioxidants that may protect tissues from oxidative damage induced by hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. This narrative review utilized PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar with keywords including "Analog rice","Diabetes Mellitus","Hyperglycemia","Dyslipidemia,", "Lipid profiles","Histopathology". The inclusion criteria comprised original English and Indonesian articles (2016-2026) evaluating in vivo analog rice interventions, selected through title, abstract, and full-text screening. The exclusion criteria were in vitro studies, human clinical trials, review articles, and non-peer-reviewed publications, resulting in 11 articles. The synthesized evidence suggests that analog rice consumption has potential benefits for reducing blood glucose levels, insulin levels, and the insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), as well as improving pancreatic β-cell function (HOMA-β), increasing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and enhancing serum lipid profiles while reducing the atherogenic index (AI). Additionally, histopathological analysis showed tissue structure improvements, including in the β cells of the Langerhans islets, myocardial cells, and kidney cells. These findings suggest that analog rice has the potential to be effective in managing T2DM and dyslipidemia.

Abstract

Dadih, a traditional fermented buffalo milk product from West Sumatra, Indonesia, is widely recognized for its probiotic properties and functional health benefits. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of freeze-drying on the physicochemical, physical, sensory, and microbiological characteristics of dadih. An experimental design was employed by comparing fresh dadih with freeze-dried dadih powder, in which samples were pre-frozen at −20°C prior to drying. Physicochemical properties were analyzed through proximate composition and water activity, while physical characteristics were assessed using color parameters (L*, a*, b*) measured by a chromameter. Sensory attributes were evaluated using descriptive analysis by ten trained panelists, and microbiological quality was determined based on total lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The results showed that freeze-drying significantly reduced moisture content (from 80.56% to 2.57%) and water activity (from 0.92 to 0.21), indicating enhanced product stability and extended shelf life. The relative concentrations of macronutrients increased due to water removal. No significant changes were observed in color parameters, suggesting that visual quality was preserved. Sensory evaluation revealed a slight increase in sourness and a minor decrease in milk and fermentation aroma. The total LAB decreased from 1.0 × 10⁸ CFU/g to 7.5 × 10⁵ CFU/g after freeze-drying, representing approximately a 3-log reduction. This final count is slightly below the commonly recommended minimum level (10⁶–10⁷ CFU/g) required for probiotic efficacy, indicating a partial loss of functional viability. In conclusion, freeze-drying effectively improves the stability of dadih by significantly reducing moisture and water activity while preserving color and sensory characteristics. Unlike conventional thermal drying methods, this technique maintains product quality and concentrates nutrients, although some reduction in viable LAB occurs.

Abstract

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) remain a persistent global public health concern, including in coastal regions traditionally assumed to have abundant iodine sources. The interrelationships between food security, dietary patterns, and iodine status in coastal populations are complex and not fully synthesized. To review and integrate international evidence on how food security shapes dietary patterns and influences iodine status among coastal populations. Methods: A structured search was conducted in PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025. Keywords included iodine status, urinary iodine concentration, food security, dietary patterns, and coastal population. Studies were synthesized narratively, with thematic focus on links between household food access, dietary behavior, and measured iodine biomarkers. The review identifies a coastal iodine paradox, where proximity to marine resources does not ensure iodine sufficiency due to socioeconomic and food system constraints. Food security influences dietary diversity and intake of iodine-rich foods, while dietary patterns mediate iodine status. Ongoing nutrition transition, characterized by shifts toward processed foods, contributes to changing iodine intake. Variability in iodized salt use and fortification quality may lead to a dual burden of iodine deficiency and excess within the same population. Socioeconomic disparities, market access, and structural food system changes contribute to heterogeneity in urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and IDD prevalence. Iodine adequacy in coastal areas cannot be assumed based solely on geography. Integrated strategies addressing food security, dietary quality, and iodized salt monitoring are essential to ensure sustainable iodine nutrition in coastal communities.

Abstract

Work productivity is an important aspect for workers and institutions that is influenced by internal factors such as education level, discipline, attitude, work motivation, health, nutrition, and physical condition, as well as external factors associated with the environment, including workplace conditions, organizational policies, wages, and infrastructure. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical fitness, sedentary behavior, nutritional status, and breakfast habits with the work productivity of employees at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Central Java Province. This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. A sample of 101 employees was selected using purposive sampling. Questionnaires were used to collect data on work productivity, sedentary activities, and breakfast habits. Physical fitness was measured using the YMCA step test method, and nutritional status was measured using body mass index. Data were analyzed using SPSS with Somers' D test and ordinal logistic regression. The results show that there is a significant relationship between physical fitness, breakfast habits, and nutritional status with work productivity while sedentary behavior is not related to work productivity. In conclusion, physical fitness, breakfast habits, and nutritional status are related to the work productivity of employees at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Central Java Province.

Abstract

Postpartum blues is a prevalent yet underrecognized mental health condition among postnatal women, particularly in rapidly urbanizing settings. Comprehensive identification of its determinants is essential for designing targeted interventions. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the predictive roles of sleep quality, spousal support, and continuity of care on postpartum blues among 96 postnatal women attending community health centres (Puskesmas) in Batam City, Indonesia, enrolled via consecutive sampling between January and June 2025. Data were collected using validated instruments, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Postpartum Partner Support Scale (PPSS), and Continuity of Care Index (COCI), and postpartum blues was assessed using the Postpartum Blues Questionnaire (PBQ-32). Data analysis included chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression. A total of 67.8% of respondents experienced postpartum blues of varying severity. Multivariate analysis showed that poor sleep quality (aOR = 8.14; 95% CI: 2.63–25.17; p < 0.001), low continuity of care (aOR = 6.02; 95% CI: 2.01–18.03; p = 0.001), and minimal spousal support (aOR = 4.53; 95% CI: 1.52–13.51; p = 0.007) were significant independent predictors, with sleep quality being the most dominant factor. Parity and delivery method did not show a significant association. The model had strong explanatory power (Nagelkerke R² = 0.71). Postpartum blues are significantly influenced by the interaction of behavioural, interpersonal, and structural factors within healthcare. Integrated interventions targeting improved sleep quality, strengthening spousal support, and improving continuity of care are needed. Given the cross-sectional design, these findings are preliminary and require longitudinal or interventional validation.

Abstract

Minimizing operating room turnover time (TOT) is crucial for optimizing surgical efficiency and improving clinical outcomes. Achieving this reduction heavily relies on effective multidisciplinary teamwork among surgical staff. This systematic review aims to evaluate various multidisciplinary collaboration strategies and their impact on decreasing TOT. Following the PRISMA guidelines and utilizing the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for quality assessment, a literature search was conducted across four databases for publications between 2015 and 2025. This yielded 16 eligible articles for analysis. The data synthesis evaluated collaboration models, intervention methods, and their specific effects on TOT. The analysis highlighted four primary strategies: (1) utilizing dedicated teams to build personnel familiarity, (2) applying structured communication during preoperative planning, (3) implementing parallel workflows for simultaneous collaboration, and (4) conducting systematic, coordination-based evaluations. These approaches were found to significantly reduce TOT. Healthcare facilities can adapt these strategies to their specific organizational contexts to enhance operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and patient safety. Future research should emphasize standardizing these collaborative frameworks across various hospital settings and surgical disciplines.
