Advisor II :Nuse Aliyah Rahmati, S.Pd., M.A. TESOL Abstract: Listening is considered as fundamental language skills to receive and messages delivered through voice and sound in the communication process. In terms of communication, authentic material is essential in listening class in order to make the students familiar with how English are used in actual life. There are many ways to develop listening skills with the help of advances in technology. One of many methods where EFL learners can practice their listening skills is by watching English video. One of the most popular Video platform containing many authentic material is Youtube. Therefore the researcher interested in conducting the research about students’ perception on the implementation of YouTube in online class. This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative research to answer the research questions. The participants in this study consist of 10 students, from the 3rd semester in English language department at the University of Islam Malang. The instrument used in this study is in the form of semi-structured interview about the implementation of YouTube in online listening class. The data analysed using qualitative data analysis including, reduction, coding, grouping, interpretation and conclusion.The result shows that all the students enjoy the implementation of YouTube in online listening classes. YouTube is implemented mostly for learning material, its implementation provide visual support, repeatability and flexibility. The study also showed that the students can learn independently by the availability of references and information that are updated regularly. Moreover, materials on YouTube are provided authentically by English natives. The result also indicated that the disadvantage of YouTube is when the students rely too much on repeatable features. This study also indicated that the role of the lecturer to guide the students to the right material is still essential in learning.Keywords: Perception, YouTube, Learning Media.

Abstract

Abstrak: Bahasa didefinisikan sebagai sistem lambang bunyi yang bersifat arbitrer yang berfungsi sebagai sarana komunikasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Namun, dalam penggunaan bahasa sering kali terdapat kesalahan baik disengaja maupun tidak disengaja. Fokus penelitian ini adalah menganalisis bentuk-bentuk kesalahan berbahasa pada serial Mama Lela episode bulan Mei 2022. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan kesalahan berhahasa pada tataran fonologi dalam serial Mama Lela. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data adalah simak dan catat pada tuturan kata dan kalimat yang berada didalam serial Mama Lela. Sumber data pada penelitian ini diambil dari tuturan langsung dalam serial Mama Lela dalam media masa melalui aplikasi youtube episode bulan Mei 2022. Hasil analisis ditemukan kesalahan fonologi bidang penghilangan fonem sebanyak 4 kesalahan, bidang perubahan fonem sebanyak 13 kesalahan, dan penambahan fonem 5 kesalahan. Jumlah kesalahan fonologi pada serial Mama Lela episode bulan Mei 2022 sebanyak 22 kesalahan. Perubahan fonem tampak pada tuturan Susi yang merubah fonem /u/ menjadi /o/. Perubahan kata [tabung] menjadi [tabong]; penambahan fonem konsonan /k/ sehingga ujaran yang terjadi tidak sesuai dengan kaidah kebahasaan. Penambahan kata [cari] menjadi [carik]; penghilangan fonem campuran pada kata [Iklas] yang menghilangkan fonem campuran /h/, kata yang benar adalah [Ikhlas] sehingga ujaran yang terjadi tidak sesuai dengan kaidah kebahasaan.Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dan pembahasan analisis bentuk-bentuk kesalahan pada serial Mama Lela episode bulan Mei 2022 terdapat tiga kesalahan berbahasa, yaitu a) perubahan fonem, b) penambahan fonem, dan c) pengurangan fonem. Kesalahan fonologi yang dilakukan oleh crew Mama Lela termasuk kesalahan yang lumrah dilakukan oleh seseorang dan faktor penyebab terjadinya kesalahan berbahasa adanya kurang perhatian pada kaidah kebahasaan yang seharusnya diterapkan oleh siswa, Siswa juga sering menyingkat kata yang tidak sesuai dengan kaidah kebahasaan. Selain itu, tingkat pemahaman siswa terhadap kosakata baku masih cukup rendah, adanya pengaruh dari bahasa ibu dan bahasa kedua siswa, dan adanya pengaruh dari lingungan baik formal dan informal. Oleh karena itu hasil dari penelitian ini dapat digunakan sebagai salah satu contoh kasus kesalahan bidang fonologi.Kata Kunci: Kesalahan berbahasa, Fonologi, SerialMama Lela.

Abstract

 Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate students' perceptions of teaching online reading comprehension, which included class management and activity during online class, student obstacles, students' perceptions of teaching reading during online class, students' perceptions in reading, and classroom management. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The subjects were four students from each class of social science major of SMAS Diponegoro Tumpang. Then to collect the data, the researcher takes teacher document and conducted in-depth-interviews as the research instrument. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews to collect the data. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews to collect the data. The researcher found three main points of students' perception. First, the teacher managed the class using a platform of Google Classroom, Google Meet, Zoom, and Whatsapp. For the reading class activity, students analyze and interpret the text from any sources. Second, it was about the student's faced the obstacles such as unstable signals and a lack of explanation by the teacher. Finally, all participants state that during learning reading online, they enjoyed the class and give them new experienced in online learning. Student understand the explanation of the material given by the teacher, and the teacher will review the material at the end of the lesson. Students in the class participate in both of discussion group and question and answer session, from this online class, they feel that their reading ability quite improved than before. Based on the findings, this study had a limited scope and several limitations. It will be better in the future to add another instrument and a different method. The suggestion was addressed to the teacher to increase students' enthusiasm in an online reading lesson, and the teacher should add interactive and interesting exercises.Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Online Learning, Students’ Perception

Abstract

Abstract: Learning English is a fundamental lesson for every level. English has four skills: speaking, writing, reading, listening, and three components: grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Vocabulary is critical in every aspect, especially in learning English. Vocabulary is essential to learn in the process, so there were usually faced problems, especially by eighth grade students in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. Therefore, every student must master vocabulary to be able to communicate. The author of this study used an ex post facto research design. The hypothesis test in this study used the One Sample t-test in SPPS version 26. The formulation of the problem in this study was whether there was the effectiveness of using the Pictoword game learning method on the vocabulary mastery of students in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. The author used a sample of 40 students of eighth grade students in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. This research instrument used a posttest adapted from the learning syllabus of the revised 2013 curriculum. Based on the one sample t-test analysis, the results showed the t-count value (-10.809) < t-table (1.685), which means the alternative hypothesis was rejected. The author concluded that there was no effectiveness of using the Pictoword game method on the vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students in SMP Wahid Hasyim. This study investigates the effectiveness of using a Pictoword game on students' vocabulary mastery for eighth grade in SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. The results of the hypothesis test indicate that the use of the game learning method using the Pictoword game has not provided effectiveness in the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. Students are advised to use varied and creative supporting media as an exercise tool to improve vocabulary mastery.Keywords: Effectiveness, Ex Post Facto, Learning Method, Pictoword, Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Abstrak: Lunturnya rasa cinta tanah air akan menimbulkan berbagai permasalahan seperti seperti berkembangnya paham radikal yang berujung pada disintegrasi bangsa. Beberapa cara yang dapat dilakukan untuk menanamkan karakter cinta tanah air, salah satunya melalui kegiatan yang berkaitan dengan kuliner. Kuliner dalam novel Pulang karya Leila S. Chudori ini membuktikan bagaimana tokoh Dimas Suryo menggunakan aktivitas yang bersentuhan dengan kuliner untuk menanamkan rasa cinta tanah air pada dirinya sendiri dan anaknya, Lintang Utara. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan peran kuliner dan karakter cinta tanah air pada tokoh Dimas Suryo dalam novel Pulang karya Leila S. Chudori. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan gastrokritik sastra dengan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil dari penelitian ini yaitu, (1) peran kuliner dalam novel Pulang karya Leila S. Chudori berupa kuliner sebagai pengenalan identitas tokoh Dimas Suryo dan kuliner sebagai penggerak konflik, (2) karakter cinta tanah air pada tokoh Dimas Suryo dalam novel Pulang karya Leila S. Chudori berupa upaya Dimas Suryo mencintai Indonesia meski ia dibuang dari Tanah Air dan upaya Dimas Suryo mengukuhkan dirinya sebagai orang Indonesia.Kata Kunci: Peran Kuliner, Cinta Tanah Air, novel Pulang

Abstract

Abstract: English is one of subject that compulsory in senior high school. Learning English is not easy for students’ who did not like this subject. In Indonesia, English regarded as foreign language so students can not practice English everywhere. Students need the appropriate language learning strategy and thinking styles to make them more comprehend in English. The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between English language learning strategies and thinking styles intensity. The researcher design in this research was quantitative approach. The researcher took 30 participants from third grade students who take linguistic major in senior high schools. The questionnaire was used as instrument in this research. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS version 26. The finding of this research showed that the third grade students mostly applied social strategy (M = 7.27) in language learning strategy context and legislative style as thinking styles most used by students’ (M = 8.20). The Pearson product-moment correlation analysis indicated a statistically significant correlation between language learning strategies and thinking styles at significant value .000. It indicates there is correlation between language learning strategies and thinking styles intensity. In brief, language learning strategies and thinking styles encourage students to learn English more effectively.Keywords: Language learning strategies, thinking styles

Abstract

Abstrak: Body shaming merupakan tindakan verbal yang mengomentari negatif seseorang tentang bentuk tubuhnya. Body shaming juga termasuk salah satu jenis perundungan yang sering terjadi dilingkungan remaja yaitu perundungan verbal. Banyak yang beranggapan bahwa body tindakan ini hanya sekedar memotivasi seseorang untuk berubah menjadi lebih baik, namun nyatanya itu salah justru membuat korban body shaming terkena dampak dari tindakan verbal ini. Dampak tersebut meliputi kesehatan mental remaja yaitu tidak percaya diri, menjadi orang yang tertutup, tidak mudah bergaul, tidak menjadi diri sendiri serta depresi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini mengetahui perspektif remaja SMA terhadap body shaming dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Hasil penelitian ini yaitu diketahui perspektif remaja SMA terhadap body shaming yaitu pengetahuan remaja tentang body shaming, dampak dari body shaming dan solusi dari body shaming. Abstract

Abstract: Reading activity has the main purpose to find information by comprehending the message originated from a written source. As stated by Harmer (2008), reading is an active mental process intended to gain information and comprehend the message in the text. To read effectively, it is necessary for the reader to apply strategies that suit their reading needs. Another aspect that influences reading strategies is gender as gender differs personality of individuals that affects learning strategies (Anantasa, 2016). Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting a study about the difference between reading comprehension strategies used by males and females. This study used a descriptive qualitative research method and semi-structured interviews as the instrument. The data for this research were collected from 10 students with 5 male and 5 female students of the English department from the University of Islam Malang online with the use of WhatsApp voice notes. The data are analyzed using qualitative analysis that consists of data reduction, grouping, coding, and interpretation to get the data as a whole. In result shows that most of the participants in this study are active readers. with female students tend to be more frequent and consistent while male students tend to be more focused in reading. The study indicated that the reasons for using strategies depend on the characteristic of the text, preference, and reading purposes. The study also indicated many differences in terms of using reading strategies, male students are dominant at previewing, skimming, and predicting, while female students are dominant at text Identification, summarizing, attention to detail, and selecting a strategy. The study suggests the importance of conducting a study on digital reading settings as reading is gradually shifted to the digital setting.Key Words: Reading strategies, gender, reading comprehension.

The effectiveness between using story completion technique and role play on the eighth grade students speaking skills of smpi salafiyah singosari in the academic year of 2021/2022. Skripsi, English Education Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education University of Islam Malang. Advisor I: Dr.Dra.Hj.Mutmainnah ,M.pd.; Advisor II: Dr. Imam Wahyudi Karimuallah, S. S, M. Pd. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of story completion techniques in developing speaking skills and overcoming lack of confidence at the eighth grade students of SMPI SALAFIYAH SINGOSARI. The researcher optimized the experimental research designs that used pre-test and post-test with quantitative approaches. The researcher took all eighth students as population. The researcher used probability purposive sampling in determining the sample with 28 students from class 8 as experimental and control group. The independent variable is story completion technique and the dependent variable is students' speaking skills. The researcher compares pre-test and posttest results between two groups from inter-rater and used an independent SPSS t-test to analyze the data. The pre-test to posttest of experimental was 48.25 to 65.50, control group was 46.63 to 57.13, and the p-value was 0.033, p= < 0.05. As a result, the researcher concluded that there was significant effect of using story completion on students’ speaking skill.  Keywords: effective, story completion technique, studeny speaking skill.

Abstract

Abstract: Online learning enforces most direct instruction into online and distance learning. However, good preparation and readiness in online learning is necessary in order to be effectively implemented. The transition from traditional to virtual classrooms, gives some challenges in maintaining social and emotional competencies for the continuation of good relationships in learning. Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting a study about what kinds of emotional support provided by lecturers in online learning based on students’ perception as well as the students' expectation of lecturers' emotional support in online learning. This research is conducted using descriptive qualitative on 10 students from the 7th semester in English language department at the University of Islam Malang because at 7th semester using self-constructed semi-structured interviews consisting of 10 interview questions. The data collected via online interview through Zoom twice and analyzed by qualitative data analysis that include reduction, coding, organizing, synthesize, and interpretation. The result indicated that the lecturers provide emotional support by actively motivate, give constructive feedback about the students' learning competence, try to maintain the class equity, guide the students about respect and pay attention to students' learning attitude, guiding the students about being responsible, and involving the students in discussion and decision making. The students believe that good emotional support should reflect a good relationship between the lecturers and students as well as make the class more enjoyable. Moreover, good emotional support can be established if motivation, attention, feedback, respect, equality, responsibility, attitude, and appreciation as well as communication are emotionally supported by the lecturers. Other than that, it is important to consider students’ learning difficulties and individual difference to maintain harmony in the classroom.Key Words: : Emotional support, online learning, perception.
