Abstract

Abstract: Reading is important in any field and degree of education as the basic skill to obtain information. Developing reading as a habit allows the reader to become more intelligent as practicing reading improves analytical skill in comprehending text. In terms of EFL, reading also have potential to develop vocabulary. Reading is habitual activities that determined by individual characteristics such as gender. Therefore, the researcher aims to study reading habit and vocabulary mastery from male and female students. This research is conducted using quantitative correlational research to answer the research question. The participants in this study consist of 115 students, 31 male and 84 female students from the 3rd semester in English language department at the University of Islam Malang. The instrument used in this study is in the form of reading habit questionnaire and vocabulary mastery test. The data analyzed using independent sample t test using SPSS 24.0 to measure the significant difference between male and female students in reading habit and vocabulary mastery. The result indicated that there is no significant difference between male and female students in terms of reading habit and vocabulary mastery. Moreover, the score between male and female students are not significantly different. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is significant correlation between students vocabulary mastery and reading habit but there is no significant correlation between gender with vocabulary mastery and reading habit.Key Words: Reading habit, Gender, Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find factors of writing achievement based on their learning styles. There are two problems to be solved: (1) What are the factors that cause students to have good writing achievement based on their learning styles (VAK) and (2) what are the factors cause students to have poor writing achievement based on their learning styles (VAK). The method in this study was qualitative study. The subjects of this study were twenty-five students in a second-grade language class at SMP Wahid Haysim. The researcher collected the data from the Perceptual Learning Style Preferences (PLSP) questionnaire from Reid (1984), the interview guide was conducted by using a semi-structural and the type of this interview was opened-ended. The data were analyzed by grouping the students based on their learning styles, explaining the data from the questionnaire and interview sheet, and drawing conclusions based on the research problems and results of the data analysis. The finding of this study shows that the auditory learning style becomes the most learning style preference by the students followed by visual and kinesthetic. Furthermore, the factors that cause students to have good writing achievements are: (1) students’ learning preferences, (2) students’ different learning styles, and (3) students’ internal, external, and Learning Approaches. The factors that cause students to have poor writing achievement are: (1) no skill in writing, uninterested, vocabulary mastery and no ability to write in English (2) Internal, External, and Learning Approaches. Keywords: factors of students' writing achievement, learning styles

Abstract

Abstrak: Terciptanya karya sastra itu ditujukan kepada penikmat karya sastra itu sendiri yaitu masyarakat. Penikmat karya sastra tersebut berperan penting dalam suatu karya yang diciptakan oleh pengarang. Penikmat karya sastra juga memiliki pengaruh yang cukup besar bagi pengarang untuk menciptakan karya sastra tersebut yaitu lingkungan dapat menimbulkan inspirasi, ide, dan pengalaman bagi pengarang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam persepsi remaja pada webseries Antares adaptasi novel wattpad Antares karya Reinda terdapat beberapa persepsi secara makna eksplisit terdiri dari makna eksplisit positif dan makna implisit negatif. Makna eskplisit positif positif terdiri dari indikator: 1) adanya komentar positif, dan 2) adanya nilai kedisiplinan dalam kebijakan dan makna eksplisit negatif terdiri dari indikator: 1) adanya komentar negatif, 2) adanya ketidakadilan antara satu tokoh dengan tokoh lainnya, dan 3) adanya prasangka buruk tokoh. Makna implisit positif terdiri dari makna implisit positif dan makna implisit negatif. Makna implisit positif terdiri dari indikator: 1) terdapat komentar positif, 2) makna implisit yang mengandung pesan positif, sedangkan makna implisit negatif 1) terdapat komentar negatif, 2) kata atau kalimat yang mengandung konotasi negatif.  Bentuk persepsi terdiri dari persepsi visual, persepsi auditorial, dan persepsi sosial. Persepsi visual memiliki indikator adanya komentar menanggapi visual tokoh, persepsi auditorial memiliki indikator adanya komentar tertarik dengan suara tokoh, persepsi sosial memiliki infikator adanya komentar tentang sifat-sifat tokoh.Kata Kunci:Persepsi, Remaja, Kenakalan Remaja,Webseries, Antares,Wattpad.

Abstract

Abstract: With the development of technology, students are more interested in digital learning that uses an internet connection that can be accessed anywhere and anytime. Duolingo app is one of the modern apps that facilitate language acquisition. Duolingo offers a model of English courses based on everyday life in a simpler way. In this application users can learn vocabulary and grammar, even this application provides a mixture of abilities in pronunciation, and word translation and provides activities to understand words from pictures, and others. Duolingo combines elements from audio visual questions in a fun way. With the gamification system offered, it can help to build interest in learning in a comfortable way and not get easily bored when learning.This study aims to determine the perception of students majoring in English towards the use of the Duolingo application as a language learning tool to learn English and to find out what aspects of language improve after using the Duolingo application as a language learning tool. The research design of this research is qualitative research. Participants in this study were 28 English students at the Universitas Islam Malang who had used the Duolingo application for more than 40 days. The data were collected by giving a questionnaire and interviewing the students.From the results of this study, most students are agreeing about the statement toward the use of the Duolingo application in their English learning. The results of the questionnaires and interviews obtained by the researcher explained that students agreed that the Duolingo application had many positive effects on students in language learning such as students becoming more motivated in learning and making students practice more and apply their language skills in everyday life. Also, some aspects of a language improve after using the Duolingo application, such as students knowing a lot of vocabulary and memorizing it easily, becoming better at grammar and pronunciation, and making it easier for students to improve their English language acquisition.Based on the finding of the study, it is addressed for future researchers. The researcher hopes that further research can examine with a larger sample and dig deeper into other topics related to the use of the Duolingo application and its implementation in English language teaching. keywords: Students’ perception, Duolingo, language tool, learning English

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Listening is considered as the most basic amongst other language skills that encompass the ability to receive and comprehend the messages that is delivered through voice and sound in the communication process. The implementation of authentic material is essential in listening class in order to make the students familiar with how English are used in actual life. There are many ways to develop listening skills with the help of advances in technology. One of many methods where EFL learners are able to practice their extensive listening skills is by watching English based videos. Therefore, the researcher is interested in conducting research about the correlation of watching English videos frequency on students’ listening skills.This study used quantitative research method on two variables which are frequency of watching English videos, and English listening skill. The data for this research collected in the form of frequency of watching video questionnaire through Google Form to know how frequent the students watch English videos at home. Moreover, the researcher also collected listening comprehension score from 2nd semester of English department at the University of Islam Malang from the listening lecturers. The data are analysed based on the mean of Likert scale in the questionnaire and correlated with students’ listening comprehension score using SPSS Pearson’s Correlation analysis.The result of the study indicates that most of the students are at high level of profile at all indicators of frequency of watching videos such as frequency, repetition and attitude. Moreover, the study also indicates significant correlation between students’ frequency of watching English videos and their listening comprehension skills. It can be concluded that all the students have high profile of watching English video frequency. Moreover, the more frequent the students watch English videos, the better their listening skills, and indicated that English authentic videos improve students’ listening skills. This study suggests that it is important to consider learning English actively while watching English videos. The next researcher should consider the relationship of watching English video frequency and other language skills such as speaking, writing, reading and grammar.Keywords: English videos, frequency, listening skill.

Abstract

Abstract: A lot of aspects of social growth in the last few years. Significantly education changes a lot in teaching strategies, learning methods, and learning sources. Back then, people used books to find knowledge and information, but seeing from a contemporary perspective, getting news and information has become much easier and faster with the help of technology. They referred to the researcher who experienced both the traditional and modern eras. The researcher, who experienced both traditional and contemporary ways, decided to use his learning experiences as a topic study. This study analyses the researcher's experiences learning English from junior to undergraduate. Using autobiography as a data source becomes much easier for the researcher to find significant moments and analyze the researcher's stories using Webster and Matorva's in-depth analysis styles. Also, the study based on descriptive qualitative with a narrative approach makes a lot of descriptions and explanations about the researcher's stories using a variant of the method. The result of this study becomes four sub-point. The first point of interest researcher finds interest in English from social media. The second point is hobbies; from doing hobbies intentionally, the researcher gain vocabulary doing those hobbies. The third point is motivation; the researcher found the motivation to learn more English in the future after he got a compliment from his teacher in senior high school. The last point is self-reflection; the researcher observes or reflects on his activities to find a weakness in his abilities and a suitable strategy for his learning progress. The analysis shows important moments in researcher learning progress from junior to university contribute a lot to constructing researcher speaking skills using the variant learning method. Second, the researcher used a variant learning method to improve his speaking skills, like using repeated reading to increase vocabulary and combining two strategies with the support of online friends to help the researcher improve his speaking abilities, including other skills. Last, readers get motivation and information about managing learning strategies more carefully after reading researcher stories.Keywords: Learning process, experiences, speaking

Abstract

Abstract: Writing is one of the English skills that must be mastered by students. In this usage, the writer uses the scramble game technique as a learning method for students’ ability in word writing. In this case, the technique is used to make it easier for students to write words correctly.The research design in this study used a quantitative research design, a quasi-experimental design. Class VII consisted of 50 students and was divided into two groups, namely the experimental and control groups, where each group consisted of 25 students. The treatment given to the experimental group was using scramble games to write students’ words. The research gives a test instrument to students who must answer questions to measure students' achievement.To analyze the data, the research uses SPSS 20, namely the Independent T-test. The results showed that the average of the experimental group was (M= 77, 60) and the control group was (M= 66, 40). At the same time, the p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) was shown. After knowing the data results, it shows that there is a positive effect on the use of scramble game techniques in writing students’ words.Keywords: Scramble game, scramble word, writing ability

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out students perception on the use of TikTok  in improving students vocabulary mastery. For the research design, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher choose eight grade from one of junior high school in Malang. The procedure of this research involved one step, interview. The finding showed that Tiktok was considered very helpful by the participants because they used TikTok as a means to watch videos about vocabulary or educational videos. The participants said that they got some information or knowledge about vocabulary by watching videos on the Tikok. They also knew a lot about various content which consist of many random video including educational video. The participants said that by using Tiktok they could get some information or knowledge about vocabulary. The video are provide English vocabulary raise their motivation and their interest to know some new vocabulary. Keyword: Perception, Tiktok Videos, Vocabulary Mastery.

Abstract

Abstract: YouTube has become a popular digital media platform used by everyone. Most important to new knowledge, especially speaking skills students have effort and high creativity. In other contexts, students use YouTube for the frequency of listening to English songs to improve their English skills. A student using YouTube has effectively and better learning speaking skills. Moreover, the COVID-19 virus that has occurred in recent years has affected various educations.The main focus of this study is to know the correlational study of the frequency of listening to English songs using YouTube and speaking skills, to evaluate the application YouTube that they mostly use to listening English songs and speaking skills. In this study, some of the participants there were 30 the 6th-semester students majoring in Indonesian Language Education Departments of the University of Islam Malang became the subject of researchers with qualitative descriptive research methods. The main focus of this study is to know the correlational study of the frequency of listening to English songs using YouTube and speaking skills, to evaluate the application YouTube that they mostly use to listen to English songs and speaking skills. This study used descriptive qualitative research methods. Research conducted questionnaires to obtain information through qualitative descriptive research methods to collect more accurate and relevant information for use in interviews and surveys, while to get more specific and relevant information according to the questionnaire researchers use interviews. Researchers collected quiz data by using Google forms personal messages via WhatsApp to students of the Islamic University of Malang who had been the subject of this study. Furthermore, the researcher focused on conducting interviews using the Zoom application to obtain more significant information about the subject. The findings show that non-English students of the Islamic University of Malang during the pandemic, most students use YouTube to increase general knowledge in general, and broadly understand information related to English, especially by listening to English songs through YouTube. Overall, the statements from the participants suggested that they also benefited from uploading videos to YouTube, which allowed them to showcase their abilities by performing English songs and reading poetry. Utilizing the platform, the participants passionately upload YouTube videos. Some students used the web application YouTube to study English although this year's lessons were conducted entirely online. Meanwhile, even several university students actively utilize YouTube for enjoyment or other objectives.Data shows that most students have a YouTube account to be able to access information and improve the learning process according to the sources they want to know. From the data that has been collected by researchers, it can be concluded that using YouTube plays an important role in providing useful educational innovations for non-English students to understand by listening to English songs and speaking performances. Keywords: YouTube, Speaking Performance, Frequency Listening English songs

Abstract

Abstract: During this virtual learning conditions, media is very important to make learning activities in the classroom run optimally with the help of technological innovation such as Zoom Meeting Applications. However, in the pandemic era, learning and teaching must be continued online, in distance learning. This study aims to find out the teacher's strategy in teaching English and to know the factors that influence students' interest in studying English at class X in SMAN 9 Malang. This research used qualitative research and the subject of this research are from both X IPS 1 & X IPS 2 that were 5 students and 1 teacher of SMAN 9 Malang. In investigating students and teacher’s perspective, the researcher used interview as the instrument for collecting data. Furthermore, the questions are adapted from Nurhamidah (2012) and Rindiani (2021) which has been validated. The findings of this study showed the students’ perceptions toward teacher’s strategy were positive. Students said that teacher’s strategy which used discourse strategy by explaining the material at beginning of the study can ease students understanding and increase vocabularies. Unfortunately, most students’ perceptions toward using Zoom Meeting Application were negative which students and teacher got some troubles, such as bad internet connection and underestimating the learning.Keywords: Strategy, interest, zoom meeting application
