Abstract

This study aims to (1) describe the needs of textbooks in learning to news writing which are used as development teaching materials and design learning, (2) design textbooks and design learning that are in accordance with the analysis of student needs, (3) develop text books and design learning for news writing based on a genre process approach for students, and (4) to find out the potential influence of developing news writing text books and design learning based on the genre process approach to learning outcomes. This research is research and development. The subjects in this study were 26 students. The results of the study indicate that the news writing text book and design learning as a result of this development has a potential influence in improving students' abilities and understanding of news writing materials in university.

Abstract

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, online learning has now become a bridge to facilitate teaching practice. Emotion has received little attention in online learning and online teaching practice for a senior high school, particularly for pre-service teachers. The study attempted to investigate a pre-service teacher's emotion during her online teaching practicum by using Hargreaves's (2001) concept of emotional geography. The data were gathered from diary journals and interviews conducted over the course of a month of teaching practice in a senior high school. The narratives were analysed using a descriptive qualitative approach combined with thematic analysis. The findings show that the pre-service English teacher experienced a variety of positive and negative emotions because of understanding and misunderstanding in schools, and that these emotions gradually changed her perceptions of her teaching practice. This research offers a novelty in terms of describing how a pre-service English teacher adapted from offline to online teaching practice utilizing WhatsApp Group and Google Classroom to share materials and deliver assessments at the time of COVID-19 pandemic. Emotional resilience and good communication skills were proven to help the participant in navigating emotional geography in online teaching practice with limited faceto-face interaction and guidance with the teacher supervisor in the school.

Abstract

Online learning is a teaching and learning activity using the internet network. This is the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic, which requires educators and students to carry out the teaching and learning process remotely with the aim of reducing the risk of spreading the virus from interactions in the classroom. In line with this situation, Vocabulary Notebook is a strategy that can be used by teachers in carrying out online teaching and learning activities, especially in mastering English vocabulary for EFL students. In order to see the effect of using Vocabulary Notebook on EFL students' English vocabulary, the researchers conducted this study with the aim to know the impact of Vocabulary Notebook on EFLs tudents' vocabulary mastery during online learning. In this study, researchers have applied an experimental research method with a posttest only control group design. The population in this study was 84 EFL students where the researcher divided the 84 students into two groups as the sample, group A was 27 students as the experimental group, and group B was 27 students as the control group. Thus, the number of samples in this study was 54 students. Based on the findings, the average score of the experimental group was higher than the control group, where the average score of the experimental group was 65,926 while the average score of the control group was 56,741. Furthermore, based on data analysis, it is found that the t-test score was 2.607 which is higher than the t-table (1.675). It can be concluded that Vocabulary Notebook has positive results on EFL students' vocabulary mastery during online learning.

Abstract

English use in tourism sector is different from business or pharmacy field, so English language learning based on needs has to be carried out. To determine the needs for English language learning in certain fields requires a needs analysis whose results can later be applied in the curriculum. This study aims to investigate  the needs of Pharmacy Diploma students for English language learning. The subjects of this study were 57 Pharmacy Diploma students  who had also worked as pharmaceutical technicians. The data was obtained by using a questionnaire which was then analysed for its frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Based on the research, the most important skills for Pharmacy Diploma students were Speaking and Translation. Meanwhile, the most significant functions of English were to read scientific articles, operate tools or computers, and communicate with patients and colleagues. Furthermore, the problems experienced by Pharmacy Diploma students in the use of English were difficulties in understanding someone speaking English quickly and also vocabulary related to the health or pharmacy. It then can be concluded that English language learning needed by Pharmacy Diploma students is related to speaking, translation, and also vocabulary enrichment related to health and pharmacy. Compiling curriculum adjusting the needs and the use of English by students is recommended.

Abstract

This study investigates English Master’s Program students in producing suprasegmental features, namely word stress. The focus is on analysing disyllabic noun-verb words in six video presentations and what are the factors that affect word stress errors from 19 English master program students. The data were obtained from transcribing the videos and selecting the disyllabic noun-verb words from the transcriptions. Furthermore, a questionnaire was used to gather information about students’ background knowledge in learning English, especially linguistics. Qualitative content analysis was employed in this study. From those videos, there were 1,089 disyllabic noun-verb words produced by the students. The stress errors made were 15 words. The stress errors mostly occurred in the first syllable and no word stress. The findings showed the factors that affected the wordstress errors were students’ native language, Bahasa Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia did nothave word-stress to differ a meaning, only for emphasis. The questionnaire showed that all students were Indonesian and only two of them used English as their native language. The background knowledge and gender had some effects on stress errors, but not vital. The results indicated that students needed to have a deeper understanding of word stress.

Abstract

This study explored the students’ engagement and active learning that appeared in flipped classroom learning. A flipped classroom is one of the course delivery modes that can be used in the pandemic situation now. The purpose of this research was to analyze to what extent a flipped classroom enhances students’ engagement and active learning in Introduction to Educational English Literature class. This research has one research problem. The research problem was to what extent does a flipped classroom enhance students’ engagement and active learning in Introduction to Educational English Literature class? This research adopted qualitative descriptive analysis. The instrument of this research was the questionnaire that used the Likert scale. The results of this research showed that through implementing a flipped classroom model in the Introduction to Educational English Literature class, the students’ behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, cognitive engagement, agentic engagement, and active learning were enhanced. In this case, the students could engage in the discussion forum, complete the tasks, and participate actively in learning activities so that the students could achieve higher engagement and learning achievement in the Introduction to Educational English Literature class.

Abstract

The use of media in teaching speaking is important. Lack of teaching media may make the students face some difficulties such as uttering their idea, referring their minds, and getting the confidence to speak. Thus, creating new media, methods, strategies, or approaches will influence the students to enjoy the learning process. This current research was conducted to design a teaching medium for speaking skills in narrative texts. By implementing three phases in the designing process of the medium, the EPUGA (English Puppet Game) was created. Based on the result of interviewing the teacher, the needs could be identified to design and develop the first prototype of EPUGA. After its prototype was created, then, it was validated by the expert. Generally, the expert suggested to make larger the size and the fonts of the card and adding the instruction on its usage. The final stage was done through an assessment conducted by the teacher’s observation and students’ responses. Accordingly, the students enjoyed and were active in practicing their speaking ability through playing the EPUGA. Thus, the EPUGA reflected that it was an attractive and interesting medium of English teaching-learning; it included the appropriate medium to encourage students in speaking; and its materials, rules, and procedures were easy to understand.
